Narrator · Narrator

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the breathing symbols on the wall with my eyes while casting a detection spell to understand their nature. The rhythm pulses through the stones like a heartbeat, but it's wrong—too slow, too deliberate. I call out to Halie without taking my gaze from the darkness within: "If you sense corruption deeper than what Merrin described last night, speak now before we proceed."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I edge closer to the pulsating sigils, tracing their dark energy patterns with my eyes. The rhythm feels wrong somehow, too deliberate, too... intentional. I glance at Halie, seeking her insight about this spiritual contamination we're wading into. "Halie," I murmur, "any idea what we're dealing with here? Those sigils..." My voice trails off as I stare at the ominous runes. "They're more than just undead taint. They're conduits for something far worse. Something big is being..."

I shake my head, trying to clear it of the ominous feelings creeping in. "We need to tread carefully here. Find a way inside without alerting whatever's lurking in there." I give Varrika a sharp look. "And no charging in half-cocked this time, alright? We scope it out first."

My eyes dart to Jeane, still muttering that detection spell. Part of me wants to hurry her along, but another part knows we need to be sure before we proceed. I shift my weight from foot to foot, fingers twitching towards my lockpicks. "Just... let us know what you find out, yeah? Because if there's something nasty in that corridor..." I don't finish the thought, but I'm pretty sure we're all thinking the same thing. Whatever's in there, it's not going to be happy about us barging in uninvited. I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. The air feels thick, heavy with some unseen pressure. It's like the very stones are watching us, waiting for us to make a mistake. I shake off the paranoia and focus on the task at hand. We need a way in. And we need to be smart about it. No heroics, no grandstanding. Just... get in, find the sword, and get out again. In one piece, if possible. I meet Varrika's eyes, trying to communicate all that with a look. She nods, seeming to understand. At least for now, we're on the same page. Whether that lasts once we're inside... well, that remains to be seen. But for now, we have a job to do. And gods help us, but I aim to see it through, no matter what horrors this crumbling tower holds.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand at the threshold of the hidden corridor, my keen elven senses already prickling with unease. The air here is thick, charged with an ancient malevolence that settles like a physical weight upon my shoulders. My gaze flicks from the pulsating sigils carved into the stone to Varrika's determined face and back again.
I have seen my share of undead taint, but this... this feels different. Deeper. More purposeful. Like a heartbeat counting down to some dreadful moment.
"The rhythm of those sigils," I murmur, my voice so low it is almost lost in the air, "is not natural. It is too... deliberate."
I turn to Halie, her holy symbols glinting softly in the dim light. She is our bulwark against corruption, and I pray that whatever we face here will not overwhelm her.*
"Halie, what do you sense? Is this simply a lair of the undead, or something far more insidious?"

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The dwarf's eyes narrow as she takes in the ominous pulses radiating from the breathing sigils. Varrika's battle-hardened instincts scream at her to be wary. This is no ordinary magic at play here—it's something darker, more malevolent. She turns to Halie, her voice a low rumble:

"Halie, what do you make of those sigils? The rhythm feels... wrong."

Varrika glances at Merrin and Seraphine. "You two, stay sharp. Keep your senses peeled for anything out of the ordinary." Her hand rests on the hilt of her mace, ready to draw steel at a moment's notice. She looks back at Jeane, her tone gruff but not unkind. "Jeane, I know magic is your realm. But if this gets too hairy, we fall back. No heroics. Understood?"

Varrika's eyes scan the hidden corridor, the dim light casting long shadows. The dwarf's breath comes in slow, controlled pants as she prepares to lead her companions into the unknown. She knows the dangers that lurk in ancient ruins like this one. But she also knows they're running out of options. "We need that sword," Varrika mutters under her breath. "And we've come too damn far to turn back now."
