Round 31

Phase: escalating

The stone walls seemed to breathe in unison, ancient symbols pulsing with malevolent light that made Merrin's skin crawl. She traced their patterns with a practiced eye—conduits for power, yes, but channeling something far worse than mere undeath. Something... alive. Something waiting.
"These aren't just sigils," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "They're feeding something big and angry." Her fingers hovered above the stone without touching—she could feel the wrongness of it humming beneath her fingertips like a thousand pissed-off spiders in a jar.
Varrika's scarred face remained impassive as she surveyed the scene, but her veteran instincts screamed at her to be wary. This was no ordinary magic at work here—it felt... deliberate. Purposeful. Like a predator waiting for prey to stumble into its lair.
Jeane stood at the corridor entrance, her tall frame tense as she completed a detection spell. The rhythm pulsed through the stones like a heartbeat, but it was wrong—too slow, too deliberate. She called out without taking her eyes from the darkness within: "Halie? If you sense corruption deeper than what Merrin described last night, speak now before we proceed."
The halfling rogue glanced at Halie, seeking her insight about this spiritual contamination they were wading into. "Halie," she murmured, "any idea what we're dealing with here? Those sigils..." Her voice trailed off as she stared at the ominous runes. "They're more than just undead taint. They're conduits for something far worse. Something big is being..."
Seraphine stood at the threshold of the hidden corridor, her keen elven senses prickling with unease. The air here was thick, charged with an ancient malevolence that settled like a physical weight upon her shoulders. Her gaze flicked from the pulsating sigils carved into the stone to Varrika's determined face and back again. "The rhythm of those symbols feels... wrong," she said softly. "Like a heartbeat counting down to some dreadful moment."
Varrika turned to Halie, her voice a low rumble: "Halie, what do you make of those sigils? The rhythm feels... wrong." She glanced at Merrin and Seraphine. "You two, stay sharp. Keep your senses peeled for anything out of the ordinary." Her hand rested on the shaft of her mace, ready to draw it in an instant if needed.
Jeane completed her spell, her crimson eyes widening slightly as the magical revelation washed over her. The corruption wasn't just undead—it was demonic in nature, and far more potent than anything they'd encountered before. She took a step back from the corridor entrance, her dark leathery wings rustling softly. "Halie," she called out again, her voice tight with apprehension. "There's something else here. Something ancient and malevolent feeding on this magic. We need to be very careful."
The atmosphere in the tower grew heavier, more oppressive as the party stood there contemplating their next move. The breathing symbols pulsed faster now, responding to their presence perhaps, or counting down to some unseen deadline. Whatever lay beyond that corridor, it was clear that proceeding further would involve facing something far more dangerous than mere undead horrors.
