Halie stared at the corridor with growing unease, her fingers tightening around the silver cross at her neck. The air inside tasted wrong—old decay and something else, like crushed metal or scorched earth. The runes on the walls weren't just decorative either; they were breathing, pulsing with a dark energy that seemed to seep into the very stone around them. "This is beyond mere decay," she said softly, her voice barely carrying over the oppressive silence. "This place has been corrupted on a fundamental level." The magic here was ancient and malevolent, twisting the very fabric of reality to suit its dark purposes.

She could feel it seeping into the stone itself, into the very air they breathed. We need to proceed with extreme caution, she thought, her gaze flicking to the other members of their party. One wrong step could trigger a trap or release something far worse. The thought sent a shiver down her spine, but she pushed it aside. They had come too far to turn back now.

"Listen carefully," she said, her voice low and urgent. "This isn't just some abandoned tower—this place is alive with dark magic. Those symbols on the walls? They're not decorative. They're breathing, pulsing with energy. Whatever happened here, whatever twisted this stone... it wasn't natural." She glanced at Merrin, who looked ready to charge in headfirst. "We can't just rush in there. We need to be smart about this."

Jeane stepped forward, her crimson eyes narrowed as she studied the walls. "This is exactly the kind of magic I warned you about before we entered this gods-forsaken forest," she said, her voice tight with tension. "Dark sorcery that twists space and time, that feeds on fear itself." She raised a hand, casting another spell—Detect Magic again. The air shimmered around her fingers as the magic took effect, and her expression darkened. "This isn't just corruption. It's demonic in nature."

Merrin let out an exasperated sigh, rolling her eyes. "Great. So we're dealing with ghosts and demons now? What next—vampires?" She glanced around the group, her hand still resting casually on the hilt of her dagger. "Look, I get it. This place is creepy as hell. But we didn't come all this way just to stand around and debate the menu of monsters." Her eyes darted back to the corridor, a mix of curiosity and apprehension in her gaze. "Besides, you heard what Elric said—there's something valuable in here. Something worth the risk."

Halie felt a spike of irritation at Merrin's casual dismissal of the obvious dangers. "And what if that 'something valuable' is what caused this corruption in the first place?" she snapped, her patience wearing thin. "What if whatever's waiting for us down there is the source of all this?" She gestured to the pulsing symbols, her hand shaking slightly with barely contained fear. "We can't just waltz into a demonic stronghold because you're bored of standing still!"

Jeane's expression remained grim as she continued her analysis. "I'm detecting multiple layers of magic here," she said slowly, her voice tight with concentration. "The outer layer is indeed demonic in nature—old and powerful—but there's something else underneath. Something... older." She opened her eyes, meeting Halie's gaze with a look that spoke volumes. "This isn't just a case of some dark sorcerer setting up shop here. This tower itself is corrupted—its very foundations are tainted."

Merrin's expression shifted from annoyance to genuine concern as she processed Jeane's words. She glanced back at the corridor, then at Halie and Jeane in turn. "Older than demonic? Like... older than demons?" she asked, her voice uncharacteristically uncertain. "Because if we're dealing with something that predates even those hellspawn, I'm starting to think this might be above our pay grade."

Halie felt a wave of relief wash over her at Merrin's sudden show of caution—perhaps the halfling wasn't quite as reckless as she feared. But before she could respond, a low groaning sound echoed from deeper within the tower. The very stone seemed to shudder around them, and dust rained down from the ceiling.

"Did you hear that?" Merrin hissed, her hand moving instinctively to the crossbow slung across her back. "Sounded like... movement."

Jeane's eyes narrowed, her wings twitching slightly in agitation. "Whatever that was, it wasn't natural stone settling," she growled. "Something's stirring down there. Something big." She turned to Halie, her expression serious. "We need to decide quickly—do we proceed with extreme caution, or do we find another way?"

Halie felt the weight of the decision settle on her shoulders. On one hand, they had come this far for a reason—to retrieve something valuable, something that could help their cause. But on the other... the very air here was thick with corruption, and whatever lay beyond those pulsing walls...

"I say we find another way," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "At least for now. We need more information, more preparation." She met Jeane's gaze, seeing her own apprehension reflected there. "We can't just charge in blindly—we'd be walking into a demon's lair with no idea what we're up against."

Merrin looked like she wanted to argue, but even she seemed hesitant in the face of such obvious corruption. Instead, she nodded slowly, her eyes still fixed on the corridor entrance.

"Fine," she said at last. "But we don't leave empty-handed. Let's scout around, see if there's another way in—maybe a less... demon-infested route." She glanced back at the pulsing symbols one last time before turning away. "And if we find anything useful on the way, well... who says we can't pick up a souvenir or two?"

Halie couldn't help but smile despite the situation—as reckless as Merrin could be, she had a point. They hadn't come all this way just to turn back empty-handed.

"Agreed," she said, her voice gaining strength. "Let's circle around, see what we can find. But stay together—we don't know what else might be lurking in these woods." She glanced at Jeane, who nodded in agreement.

And with that, the group turned away from the corridor and its pulsing, breathing symbols, setting off to explore the perimeter of the crumbling tower. The air seemed to lighten slightly as they moved away from the source of the corruption, but Halie knew their troubles were far from over. Whatever lay within those walls... whatever had twisted the stone itself...

We'll need more than luck to survive this, she thought grimly as they pressed on through the shadowed woods. But we've come too far to turn back now.

The tower loomed ahead, silent and watchful, its secrets still hidden within the stone—and the party pressed on, their fate intertwined with whatever ancient evils slept within its walls.

To be continued...
