Round 1 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I survey the crumbling tower before us, my wings tucked close against the chill wind that whips through the Whispering Woods. The stone is weathered and stained with age, but beneath it, I sense power—the kind of raw, untamed magic that sets my succubus blood humming with anticipation. The others stand clustered together, their faces etched with apprehension. They're expecting me to lead, to have some grand plan or arcane trick up my sleeve. And they'd be right to expect it—I am Jeane Cromwell after all, the most powerful sorceress in this sorry little party. But even I can feel the weight of this place pressing down on us like a physical thing. The tower's history is thick with death and dark magic—the perfect ingredients for the kind of malevolent spirits that make even my skin crawl. We need to move carefully, to test every step before we commit fully. But these fools behind me won't understand subtlety or caution. They're itching for a fight, eager to prove their strength with steel and sorcery. I'll have to keep them in line—one misstep could spell disaster. First things first: reconnaissance. The map in my hand is likely worthless, but the stone itself might yield clues if I focus my senses properly. I close my eyes, letting my awareness expand outward, seeking the telltale signs of magical wards or hidden traps. "I'm going to have a closer look," I announce, striding forward with feigned confidence. "The rest of you stand ready."
I look at each face in turn, seeing my own apprehension reflected. "Jeane is right," I say softly. "We should know what we're facing before we walk into that cursed place." My hand tightens around my heavy mace, feeling its solid reassurance. "But reconnaissance alone won't be enough. We need a plan for how to proceed once we have information." I meet Merrin's eyes directly. "Tell us what you sense. Then we decide together."
I glance between Jeane and Halie, taking in their expressions of apprehension and concern. My gaze lingers on the crumbling stone tower looming before us, its ancient masonry streaked with age and neglect. The air feels thick with tension, as if the very stones are holding their breath in anticipation. My hands twitch at my sides, eager to do something - anything - but I force myself to remain still. As our resident lockbreaker and scout, it's my job to be the eyes and ears of the party. To sniff out traps, spot hidden dangers, and keep us all alive long enough to claim whatever prize lies within those treacherous walls. I wet my lips, tasting the dust and decay on the air. "What do you need from me, Jeane?" I ask, pitching my voice low. "You want me to check for traps on the steps? See if there's a secret way in that doesn't show up on this... less than reliable map?"
My eyes flick down to the crumpled parchment clutched in Halie's hands, then back up to meet Jeane's gaze. I keep my expression neutral, but inside I'm already running through scenarios - pressure plates, hidden blades, magical wards. The tower may be crumbling, but that doesn't mean it will be easy. I take a step forward, ready to move at Jeane's command. My crossbow feels heavy in its strap across my back, but I know I may need it soon enough. Undead skeletons and shadow demons - just another day's work for Merrin Quickstep. "Lead on, sorceress," I murmur, with a wry twist of my lips. "Let's see what this cursed place has in store for us."
I listen intently as Jeane reports what she senses of the tower's magic, my eyes narrowing with concern behind my spectacles. The raw power she describes is not unlike the forbidden tomes I've studied, each line a whisper of ancient secrets and terrible costs. My hand instinctively tightens around the heavy mace at my belt, the weight a familiar comfort against the unknown dangers ahead. As Merrin prepares her crossbow, I take a step closer to Jeane, lowering my voice so only she can hear me.
"It sounds like the work of a sorcerer far beyond our usual foes," I murmur, my tone grave. "This will be no simple skeleton or goblin. We must tread carefully."
I glance back at Halie and Varrika, seeing the same apprehension mirrored in their eyes. For all our skills, none of us have faced true dark magic before. The thought sends a chill down my spine, but also stokes a strange excitement within me, the thrill of forbidden knowledge beckoning like a siren's call.
"I will begin an incantation to shield us against negative energy," I continue, my mind already racing through the complex patterns of the spell. "It will not stop all harm, but it may blunt some of what lies within these walls."
I turn to Merrin, who is still consulting the map, her brow furrowed in concentration. She looks up as I approach, a question in her eyes.
"Merrin," I say softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "This map... it feels incomplete. Can you sense anything more about its origins? Any clues as to what traps or wards we might face inside?"
My own heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of anticipation and fear. I know we are on the precipice of something momentous, something that will test not just our combat skills, but our very understanding of magic itself.
I study the crumbling stone tower before us, my hand resting on the comforting weight of my mace at my hip. The air is thick with tension and the weight of untold years. I can practically taste the decay on my tongue. Jeane's words about the raw magic she senses send a shiver down my spine. As a dwarf, I've seen my share of ancient sites, but there's always an edge to places like this - a feeling that something is just waiting to wake up and bite you. I turn to Jeane, my voice a low growl. "Aye, a bit of scouting seems wise. But mind ye don't go poking at things without knowing what they are. I've seen too many a brave soul turned to dust for their curiosity."
My eyes sweep the tower entrance, searching for any signs of traps or guardians. The shadows seem to shift and writhe in the corners of my vision, but I can't quite catch them. It's playing tricks on me, or something more? I take a step forward, my hand tightening on my mace. "Let's be about it then. But keep sharp. I don't like the feel of this place any more than you do."
