Round 28 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin readies her crossbow, a faint glow emanates from the corridor ahead, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The skeletal warrior shambles forward, its bony hands grasping for Varrika, who instinctively raises her mace to block the blow. The air is heavy with the scent of decay and ancient magic, making it hard to breathe. The ground shudders beneath their feet as the hallway wall slides open, revealing a narrow corridor lined with twisted, blackened iron. A chill runs down Merrin's spine as she sees a pair of glowing red runes etched into the stone floor, pulsing with dark energy. The scuttling sounds grow louder, and the skeletal warrior's eyes glow with an unnatural light as it lunges forward once more.
I can taste the corruption on my tongue—this place is alive with death magic, and it's hungry. The wards are like tripwires across this hallway, probably rigged to summon more of those boneheads if we step wrong. Varrika, stay sharp but don't engage unless absolutely necessary. Merrin, keep that crossbow ready but pointed down—the last thing we need is a stray bolt triggering something worse. Halie, your holy symbol might as well be a beacon in here; keep it covered or the dark stuff will come sniffing. Seraphine, I need you to cast Detect Magic—slowly, carefully—and mark any active sigils on the floor with a pinch of dust or powder from your pack. We're not charging blind into this meat grinder just because we ran out of torches. And whatever's scuttling around back there? Let it think we're still here, frozen in fear. The moment we start moving through these wards, it'll know for sure we're coming—and that means everything nasty downstairs will be waiting at the bottom with a welcoming committee.
I draw my crossbow, the cool metal familiar in my hands as I scan the shadows ahead. The darkness presses in around us, thick as treacle and just as cloying. I can feel the weight of the heavy tome in my pack, and the malevolent presence that seems to emanate from it, like a physical force pushing against my back. My fingers tighten on the trigger as I hear the scuttling sounds grow louder, but I hesitate to fire. We're in a confined space, and I don't want to risk hitting one of my companions in the dim light. Instead, I shift position, trying to get a better angle on whatever is lurking in the darkness. I can see Varrika tensing, her mace gripped tightly as she prepares to face whatever is coming. Halie has her holy symbol out, the silver gleaming faintly in the gloom. Seraphine and Jeane are huddled together, poring over some kind of map or plan, their voices hushed. I want to ask what they're talking about, but I don't dare take my eyes off the shadows for even a moment. Instead, I focus on the task at hand - keeping watch and staying alive long enough to find out what secrets this accursed tower holds.
I raise my hand, casting a simple Detect Magic spell, its faint glow illuminating the runic sigils etched into the stone floor. The magic here isn't just residual - it's alive, humming with malevolent intent.
"Careful now," I murmur to Jeane, who is hunched over studying the ward. "Those aren't just marks on the floor. They're like tripwires, ready to summon more of those boneheads if we step wrong."
My eyes dart towards the scuttling sounds echoing from the dark corridor ahead. The darkness feels heavier now, almost solid in its oppressiveness. I shift my weight, fingers twitching near the hilt of my staff.
"The corruption is thicker here," I say, my voice dropping to a low murmur. "It tastes like death and decay on the back of my tongue."
I turn to Merrin, who's readying her crossbow with tense efficiency.
"You see anything out there, rogue?" I ask, my tone sharp and direct. I need information, not reckless bravado. "Because if something is coming, I'd rather know what it is before it reaches us."
The darkness presses in around us, thick as treacle and just as cloying. I can feel the weight of the heavy tome in my pack, and the malevolent presence that seems to emanate from it. It's like a physical pressure against my skin, making my hackles rise.
