The skeletal warrior's reanimation causes its bones to shatter and reform, sending shards flying in all directions. The sound of scraping and scuttling grows louder, and the air is filled with an acrid stench. As the party cowers in the entrance hall, a chill runs down Merrin's spine as she readies her crossbow, finger on the trigger. The ground shudders once more, and a section of the hallway wall slides open, revealing a narrow corridor beyond. The scuttling sounds are now mere feet away, and the darkness seems to press in even further. A faint glow emanates from the corridor, casting eerie shadows on the stone walls.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the sigils etched into the stone with my gaze, feeling the dark magic pulse beneath my fingertips. The wards are ancient and corrupt—designed to feed on violence itself, growing stronger with each drop of blood spilled here. We need to map these trigger points carefully or we'll be swarmed by whatever undead horrors this place keeps buried. Merrin, keep that crossbow ready but don't fire unless you're absolutely sure of your target. The stonework itself is alive with dark energy—disturb the wrong rune and we could summon half the tower down on us. Varrika, I need you to watch my back while I work. Something's scuttling in the darkness ahead and I can feel it tasting our magic. Seraphine, if you can cast any illumination spells without disturbing the wards, do so carefully—we're stumbling blind through a killbox right now. Halie, stay close to Merrin. Your divine aura might be enough to keep us safe from whatever's crawling in the walls. And for fuck's sake, everyone keep your voices down—sound travels differently in these cursed corridors. This place is hungry. I can feel it gnawing at the edges of my mind, trying to pull me under. Whatever devoured those adventurers who came before us? It's still here. We need to move forward carefully or we'll join them as more fuel for this twisted machine.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The air grows thick with an ancient, malevolent presence as we stand on the precipice of the tower's inner sanctum. A heavy, cloying scent of decay and magic clings to everything, settling like a shroud over our shoulders. Jeane's warning about the wards echoes in my mind, a grim reminder of the delicate balance we must maintain.
"I can feel it too," I murmur, my voice so low it is almost lost in the oppressive silence. "The magic here... it's not just dormant. It's alive."
I shift closer to Jeane, my eyes straining in the near-darkness to make out her form. The faint outlines of her face are illuminated by a dim, ethereal glow from the sigils she studies, casting eerie shadows across her features. Her expression is one of intense concentration, and I can see the sweat beading on her brow as she traces the patterns with her fingertips.
My own hands tremble slightly at my sides, the weight of the heavy tome in my pack suddenly feeling more like a burden than a source of knowledge. This place... it feels wrong. Not just wrong, but actively hostile.
The scuttling sound grows louder now, a frantic skittering against stone that sets my teeth on edge. It’s coming from deeper inside the tower, where the darkness is thickest and most impenetrable. A cold dread settles in my stomach as I imagine what kind of creature could make such a sound.
I take a steadying breath, trying to calm the frantic beat of my heart. We came here for the Time-Splitting Sword, knowing full well the dangers that awaited us. But now, on the threshold of our goal, the reality of those dangers feels far more immediate and terrifying than any story we could have read.
"Jeane," I whisper, my voice a thread of sound in the oppressive silence. "What do you see?"

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika grips her mace tightly, her knuckles white against the weathered wood. The darkness presses in around them, thick and oppressive, the air heavy with the scent of decay and ancient magic. She can hear the scuttling sounds drawing closer, the click of bones against stone sending a chill down her spine. "Stay sharp, everyone," she growls, her voice low and gravelly. "Whatever's coming, it ain't friendly."

She shifts her weight, settling into a stable fighting stance. Her eyes strain to pierce the darkness ahead, searching for any sign of movement or threat. The silence stretches on, broken only by the occasional drip of water from somewhere deep within the tower's depths. Varrika's gaze darts to Merrin, who is hunched over the lock with desperate intensity. "You got that lock picked yet?" she asks, a note of urgency in her tone. "We're fixin' to have company real soon."

She turns to Halie, who is clutching her holy symbol tightly, her eyes closed in prayer. "Halie," Varrika says, her voice softening slightly. "Keep that light of yours ready. We may need it bad."

The dwarf warrior takes a deep breath, the weight of her armor pressing down on her shoulders. She knows that whatever lies ahead, it will be a test of their strength, their skill, and their faith. But she also knows that they have faced worse before, and emerged victorious. Varrika tightens her grip on her mace once more, ready to face whatever horrors the tower may unleash upon them. "Let's get this done," she mutters under her breath, "and get the hell out of here."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

The darkness presses in around us, thick and oppressive. The air is heavy with the scent of decay and ancient magic. I can feel the weight of the heavy tome in my pack, and the malevolent presence that seems to emanate from it.
