As the last torch falls, darkness engulfs the entrance hall, and the party's senses reel from the sudden loss of light. The air grows thick with the stench of decay, and the scuttling sounds intensify, making it seem as though the very walls are closing in on them. The skeletal warrior reanimates, its bony hands grasping for the party members. Varrika swiftly notches an arrow in her crossbow, preparing to take aim. "Incoming!" she shouts, her voice carrying above the din. Halie readies her holy symbol, a soft blue glow emanating from the silver as she prepares to channel divine energy. Suddenly, the hallway's walls begin to shudder, and a low, rumbling growl echoes through the corridor, making the party's skin crawl. The ground beneath their feet starts to tremble, and a section of the wall slides open, revealing a narrow, winding staircase descending into darkness.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I light my wand and hold it aloft, its arcane glow barely cutting through the darkness before us. The scuttling sounds grow closer, echoing off unseen walls. 'Halie,' I call out, her silhouette just visible in the dim light, 'Stay behind me and Seraphine. Merrin, keep your crossbow ready — aim for anything that moves too quickly or glows with unnatural energy.' My eyes scan the warded corridors ahead, searching for patterns in the sigils etched into the stone. 'These symbols... they're designed to summon and resurrect undead guardians. We need to move forward carefully, mapping each trigger point as we go.'

I step closer to the wall, tracing one of the intricate designs with a gloved finger. The air grows colder around me, and I feel a subtle pressure against my mind — the ward testing my resolve. 'The magic here is... older than I anticipated. And hungrier.' I turn back to the group, my expression grave but controlled. 'We have two options: attempt to disable or bypass each warded section individually, which could take days and alert every guardian in the tower, or find a way to suppress the entire ward system at its source.'

'Varrika,' I address our frontline fighter, 'I need you ready to engage anything that emerges. Don't let it reach the others.' To Merrin, whose reckless curiosity is palpable even in the darkness, I add, 'Stay focused. The corruption here can twist even the most disciplined spellwork into something dangerous. Trust your instincts, but don't trust any sudden insights or whispers — they may not be your own.'

I return to the wall, pressing my palm against a particularly complex sigil. A low hum fills the air as power flows through me, and I gasp at the sensation — dark energy trying to latch onto my own arcane reserves. 'Interesting... The ward is designed to absorb life force from sacrifices and use it to fuel endless guardians.' I pull back quickly, wiping sweat from my brow. 'We need to move now, before whatever's scuttling in the darkness decides to rush us all at once.'

My mind races with possibilities — should we attempt a stealthy approach through the corridors, hoping the ward doesn't detect our passage? Or charge forward aggressively, overwhelming any summoned guardians before they can respawn? The unknown entity lurking deeper within the tower adds an extra layer of urgency to our decisions. 'Listen carefully,' I say, voice low and intense. 'I believe I can create a temporary disruption field around us — it won't disable the wards completely, but it might mask our presence long enough to slip through without triggering every guardian at once.' I glance around the group, gauging reactions. 'It will require concentration and leave me vulnerable for a short time. Someone needs to watch my back while I cast.'

'Who volunteers?' I ask, already knowing Halie's protective instincts will likely drive her forward despite the danger. But part of me hopes Merrin might surprise me — that her eagerness to test herself against this ancient evil might translate into useful action rather than reckless experimentation. The scuttling sound grows louder, and something clicks rhythmically in the darkness ahead. We have seconds to decide our next move before whatever's approaching makes it for us.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I grip my mace tighter, the worn wood reassuring against my palm in the oppressive darkness. The scuttling grows louder, echoing off the damp stone walls. "Listen up, you lot," I growl, pitching my voice low. "We've got company coming and it ain't bringing tea biscuits."

I sidle up to Merrin, keeping a wary eye on the blackness ahead. "Keep working that lock, but make it snappy. We'll hold this hallway as long as we can, but I'd rather not find out what's scuttling in the dark." My gaze flicks to Halie. "Sister, stay sharp and keep your holy symbol ready. We might need to throw a little divine light on the situation soon."

The air grows thick with menace, the unknown enemy closing in. I plant my feet, settling into a defensive stance. My heart pounds steady as a war drum, primed for battle. "Jeane, Seraphine - I need you two to keep eyes on those wards. We can't afford any more surprises popping out of the walls."

The sounds draw closer, a skittering whisper that sets my teeth on edge. I take a deep breath, steeling myself. "Here they come," I mutter. "Stick together and watch each other's backs. It's fight or die in this place."

I raise my mace, the worn head gleaming dully in the faint light. A grim smile tugs at my lips. "Well, ain't this a party," I say, voice dry as bone. "Let's see if these scuttling bastards like the taste of dwarf steel."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch the last of the torches flicker out one by one, plunging us into a suffocating darkness broken only by the faint, unearthly glow emanating from the runes on the walls. The sudden plunge into total blindness is disorienting, but it’s the scuttling sounds that truly set my teeth on edge. They seem to be coming from all around us now, a hundred tiny feet skittering across stone, getting closer.
My eyes strain uselessly against the void. I can hear Merrin shifting her weight behind me, the soft rasp of metal on leather as she readies her crossbow again. Halie is muttering a prayer under her breath, her voice a low, soothing hum in the oppressive silence. Varrika’s heavy breathing is labored—she must be in pain from that cut. And Jeane...
Jeane. Her silence is deafening. She should be analyzing these wards, warning us of what else might rise from their depths. I force down a surge of frustration, focusing instead on the immediate threat.
"Jeane," I call out, my voice a strained whisper that sounds loud in the confined space. "What can you tell us about these runes? Are they likely to summon more... guardians?"
The sound of her shuffling parchment answers me, followed by a low murmur as she pores over her notes. I can almost feel her eyes darting back and forth across the ancient text, searching for something that could save us.
