The last torch guttered and died, plunging the tower's entrance hall into total darkness. The sudden loss of sight was jarring, leaving the party dependent on sound and touch alone. The scuttling sounds intensified, echoing from multiple directions within the narrow corridors that stretched deeper into the structure. The air grew colder, thick with the scent of decay and old dust.

Varrika's voice cut through the oppressive silence. "Incoming! Something's moving fast in the dark halls ahead." She notched an arrow in her crossbow, the familiar action grounding her despite the blindness. Her fingers tightened around the weapon, ready to fire at any threat that emerged into the faint ambient light from Jeane's wand.

Jeane held the glowing wand aloft, its arcane blue flame barely piercing the encroaching shadows. She called out to Halie, her voice steady but tense. "Stay close to Seraphine and me — avoid touching anything in the walls." Her crimson eyes scanned the darkness ahead, focusing on the faintly glowing symbols etched into the stonework of the corridor. The ward patterns were complex, shifting with each echoing sound from deeper within.

The sorceress continued her analysis in a low voice. "These aren't just defensive runes — they're active corruption engines. Every scuttling sound... more guardians being spawned." Her wings shifted uneasily behind her, the leathery appendages brushing against the stone walls as she moved forward carefully.

Varrika moved alongside Merrin, her scarred hands guiding her through the darkness by touch alone. "Keep working that lock," she growled softly. "But do it quick — we don't know how long this hallway's safe." She could hear Halie's nervous breathing behind them and wanted to ensure the cleric stayed shielded from the tower's corrupting influence.

Seraphine stood near the doorway, her sharp elven senses straining against the oppressive darkness. The scuttling sounds were everywhere now, a constant reminder of unseen threats closing in. She whispered an arcane detection spell, hoping to map the immediate area through magical means rather than relying on sight alone.

The wizard's spell triggered, painting a hazy mental image of the corridor ahead — multiple heat signatures moving rapidly toward their position from at least three different directions. The largest was humanoid, but the smaller ones... they were wrong somehow, too many joints, too fast for anything natural.

"Jeane," Seraphine hissed, "I'm detecting multiple hostiles converging on our position. At least six distinct entities, plus something larger moving through the central corridor." Her fingers traced arcane sigils in the air, preparing a spell that might offer some protection against whatever horrors awaited them in the dark.

The darkness pressed in, thick and suffocating, as the sounds of scuttling drew ever closer. The party stood ready in the entrance hall, weapons drawn, spells prepared, hearts pounding in the oppressive silence between heartbeats.
