As the skeletal warrior shambles forward, its bony arms outstretched, Varrika swiftly sidesteps, avoiding its initial lunge by a hair's breadth. The sudden movement catches Halie off guard, and she stumbles backward, her heavy mace clattering against the stone floor. The sound echoes through the hallway, momentarily blinding the party with the reverberations. The skeletal warrior, undeterred, continues its relentless advance, its eyes fixed on Varrika as it closes the distance. The ground beneath their feet begins to vibrate violently, and the air is filled with the pungent smell of decay as whatever massive entity is stirring in the darkness ahead starts to make its presence known. A faint, guttural chuckling emanates from the depths of the hallway, sending a chill down Seraphine's spine. She can feel the weight of ancient magic bearing down on her, threatening to crush her beneath its oppressive force.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I grab Varrika's arm, pull her back. "Wait! The wards are active now—the magic is corrupt." The walls pulse with dark energy, each beat sending fresh dread through me. That... that voice mentioned a 'Devourer.' We can't just charge in blindly. Jeane's right—whatever this thing is, the ward system is feeding it power now. I won't let us become its prey because my friend thinks a few extra gold pieces are worth dying for. We need to find another way.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin peers into the darkness beyond the tower entrance, crossbow at the ready. The scuttling sounds echo ominously off the stone walls, setting her nerves on edge. She takes a steadying breath, mind racing through potential escape routes if things turn sour. "Alright, lads and lassies," she calls out in a hushed tone, "Keep your wits about you. Somethin' nasty's comin', and I don't fancy meetin' it head-on in this pitch black."

Her eyes dart to the pulsing ward runes lining the corridor. The ancient magic feels like a physical weight, pressing down on her shoulders. She inches closer, squinting at the glowing symbols. "Jeane," she whispers to the sorcerer, "any chance you can make sense of those runes without touchin' 'em? I'd rather not be the one to trigger whatever fresh hell this is."

Merrin's fingers tighten around her crossbow, ready to fire at the slightest threat. The musty air is thick with tension, and she can't shake the feeling that they're being watched...and hunted.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I can feel it—every pulse of this ward is drawing power from somewhere deeper in the tower. Whatever that voice meant by 'Devourer', whatever's at the center of all this corruption, we just fed it energy by breaking through. The geometry of the ward is collapsing inward with each heartbeat, trying to pull everything back into its core. Whatever's coming down that hallway sounds like a swarm of oversized spiders on speed, and I doubt they're here for tea. Merrin, put that crossbow down for a moment—no point wasting bolts in total darkness. Focus instead on channeling light into the bolt tips, make them holy if you can manage it; we'll need them to function as proper anti-undead ammunition once something actually appears. Form a tight line across this corridor—if we let whatever's out there get around us in this dark, we're done for. Varrika up front with that mace ready, Merrin and Seraphine behind her with crossbows aimed low at the ground level, Halie and I in the back providing support magic and light if needed. Everyone stay absolutely still until something shows itself properly. The ward's corruption feels persistent, dangerous—like it's trying to latch onto my sorcery somehow. We need to map its trigger points carefully before moving deeper; one wrong step could summon an entire undead parade.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The acrid smoke from the extinguished torches still hangs in the air, a bitter reminder of our vulnerability as I stand at the edge of the light cast by the moon outside. The scuttling sound grows louder, more insistent, coming from multiple directions now. I feel a chill trace its way down my spine, a primal fear of what unseen horrors might be lurking in the darkness beyond our small sphere of visibility.
"My friends," I say, my voice cutting through the tense silence like a blade, sharp and clear despite the dread coiling in my gut. "We are no longer simply trespassing. This tower, it... it is alive. Conscious. And it does not welcome us."
I gesture toward the broken wardstone on the floor where Merrin's carelessness unleashed this chaos. The air around it still shimmers faintly with residual magic, a visible manifestation of the corruption that now courses through the entire structure.
"The activation of these wards... it is more than a mere defense. It is an offensive. A summoning. And one that seems to be escalating."
My eyes dart toward the shadows at the end of the corridor where the scuttling intensifies, a frantic sound of something large and many-legged moving with purpose. I take a step back, my hand instinctively reaching for the heavy mace at my belt. "Whatever we face next, whatever creature this 'Devourer' is that the whispers spoke of... it will not be alone."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I keep my heavy mace at the ready, squinting into the inky darkness of the tower's entrance hall. The eerie silence is broken by the occasional skittering sound echoing from the depths beyond, setting my teeth on edge. I shift my weight, the worn leather of my armor creaking softly. "Keep alert," I growl to the party at my side. "Those skittering sounds aren't coming from anything friendly." My eyes strain to pierce the gloom ahead, searching for any sign of movement. The air is thick with the musty scent of ancient stone and something darker, more ominous.
