As Halie examines the ward symbols, her eyes glow with an otherworldly light, illuminating a faint symbol etched into the wall nearby. The air seems to vibrate with malevolent energy, and the wards on the walls begin to pulse with an intense, pulsing red glow. Suddenly, the scuttling sounds grow louder, and the skeletal warrior rises again, its bony fingers grasping for Varrika's mace. The party stumbles backward, momentarily blinded by the sudden influx of light from Halie's eyes. When they regain their composure, they see that the scuttling sounds have grown to a cacophony of scratching, scuttling, and scraping noises, as if whatever is making them is moving closer, faster. Merrin readies her crossbow, the bolt chambering with a metallic click. "We need to get out of here, now!" she warns, her voice low and urgent. The party's options are clear: proceed deeper into the tower, or retreat back into the Whispering Woods.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I draw my wand, its crystal tip pulsing with a soft, pale blue light that cuts through the oppressive darkness. The air in this place is thick with ancient magic, a choking miasma that feels like it's seeping into my very bones. "The wards are active," I say, my voice a low murmur meant only for our immediate circle. "And they're not just defensive—they're summoning. That skeleton? It didn't rise on its own." My gaze darts around the shadowed hallway, where the scuttling sounds grow louder, more insistent. "We have to be extremely careful about where we step. One wrong move and we could be facing an entire army of these things."
I step closer to Halie, my eyes narrowing as I study the faintly glowing runes on the wall she's illuminating with her holy radiance. They pulse with a sickening crimson light, each one a tiny heart beating with malevolent intent. "Those symbols... they're more than just wards. They feel alive, hungry." A shiver runs down my spine as I imagine what might be feeding that hunger. "We need to map this floor carefully before we proceed any further. Merrin, can you get us a rough sketch of the layout?"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the symbols on the wall with my fingertip, feeling the wrongness of their geometry pulse against my skin. These aren't protective wards—they're recruitment charms. They're not designed to keep things out; they're designed to pull things in from... elsewhere. The chuckling I heard wasn't just auditory—it was the sound of magic laughing at us. Halie's right, Merrin. Touching those symbols now would be like pissing on a hellhound and expecting it to thank you. We need to map this floor carefully before we take another step forward. Those wards aren't static—they're active, and they're recruiting something worse than that skeleton already. I can feel it feeding off the ambient corruption in the air. Varrika, hold formation at the entrance with Seraphine. If whatever's scuttling around decides to rush us, we need a defensive line. And Halie—I appreciate your caution, but don't mistake this for hesitation. I'm not backing down; I'm mapping the battlefield before we charge in blindly. I draw my heavy mace and grip it tightly, feeling its familiar weight. The air feels wrong here—like trying to breathe underwater—but that's just the tower's magic trying to drown us. We didn't come this far to turn back now. But we're not idiots either. We proceed with knowledge, not just brute force. My wings shift restlessly beneath my cloak as I concentrate on the ward energy. The Devourer that voice mentioned—the ward activation might be summoning it, or preparing the way for its arrival. Either way, we need to move carefully and map which sections of floor are warded before we step on them.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I grip my crossbow tightly, ears straining for any sound of movement in the darkness. The scuttling noises seem to be getting closer, and I can't shake the feeling that something far worse than a skeleton is about to emerge from those warded corridors. "Alright, listen up," I mutter to the party. "We've got multiple hostiles incoming, and they're not going to be easy to take down. Varikka, you're on point with that mace of yours. Seraphine, Halie, Jeane - I need you three ready to provide cover fire and support. And for the love of all that's holy, stay away from those wards unless absolutely necessary."

I take a deep breath, trying to still the frantic beating of my heart. "I know we're in a tight spot here, but panicking isn't going to help anyone. We need to work together, use each other's strengths, and hope that whatever's coming at us isn't as bad as it sounds."

I glance over at Jeane, who is still poring over the ward symbols with a look of intense concentration on her face. "Any ideas on how we're supposed to get out of this mess?" I ask, trying to keep my voice light even as fear gnaws at the edges of my mind. In the end, though, there's only one thing left to do: stand our ground and fight. Whatever horrors the darkness may hold, we'll face them together - or die trying.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

In the darkness, Varrika grips her mace tightly, her eyes straining to see any movement in the blackness. The scuttling sounds grow louder, and she tenses, ready to swing at whatever emerges from the shadows. Her mind races with possibilities - more skeletons, rats, or worse. She calls out gruffly to the others, "Stay sharp, all of you. We've got company coming, and it won't be friendly." Her voice echoes in the confined space, a reminder of the danger lurking just out of sight. Varrika shifts her weight, preparing to step forward into the unknown, to shield the others from whatever horrors might emerge. But she hesitates, remembering the last skeleton's attack. They need light, and fast, before something even worse catches them off guard. "Jeane!" she barks. "Those torches of yours - get 'em lit now! We're sitting ducks in this blackness."

Her hand tightens on her mace as the darkness presses in, ancient magic and unknown terrors closing in around the party's tenuous defensive line.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

The wards pulse with malevolent energy, each beat seeming to draw something ancient and hungry from the tower's depths. I move forward carefully, my heavy mace held ready, silver holy symbol clutched in my other hand. Merrin's warning echoes—stay away—but we can't simply stand here waiting for whatever that chuckling heralds. "Jeane," I call softly, "you mentioned a Devourer? What kind of thing are we dealing with here?" My eyes flick to the dark corridor ahead, then back to the party. Varrika's grip on her mace is white-knuckled, Seraphine's wand ready but hesitant. Merrin's face shows the same apprehension I feel. We need to move carefully, map this place properly before stumbling into a trap. But standing here does nothing. The air grows thicker, more oppressive, with each beat of those wards. We must proceed, but how?
