As Merrin's hands tremble slightly as she works on the glowing runes, Halie casts her holy symbol once more, and the ward surges back to life. The runes pulsate with an eerie blue light, and the air around them seems to distort, like heat haze on a hot summer day. The whispering voice grows louder, more urgent, and Seraphine's eyes flick towards Varrika, who readies her sword. The runes on the gate begin to glow in syncopated patterns, like a countdown timer ticking away. Suddenly, the air around them erupts with a faint scent of ozone, and the ground beneath their feet shudders. The magical wards have triggered, and whatever is inside is now aware of their presence. A momentary darkness falls, broken by flashes of flickering torchlight that seem to emanate from within the tower's depths. The sound of scuttling, like a thousand insects on a hundred legs, echoes through the hallway beyond the gate.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch the runes on the gate pulse and glow, their eerie light casting dancing shadows across Merrin's face as she works frantically at the locks. The air itself feels heavy now, thick with a malevolent presence that makes my skin prickle. A chill runs down my spine as the whispering voice grows louder, more insistent. It’s not just an auditory thing anymore; it feels like the magic is pressing against my mind, seeking entrance.
"Everyone, stand back from the door," I command, my voice strained with a calm I don't feel. My hand goes to the hilt of my sword, though I know it will be useless against this kind of dark magic. "Whatever that ward was protecting, it knows we're here now."
I turn to Varrika, her blade already drawn and ready. Her eyes are hard, focused on the gateway ahead, but there's a flicker of uncertainty in them too. Good. At least one of us is feeling this fear. It’s a cold comfort, but better than false confidence.
"The whispering... it feels different now," I say, more to myself than to anyone else. I close my eyes, trying to sort through the cacophony of sensation assaulting my senses. "Not just an echo. More like... a warning."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The whispering grows louder, more insistent—it's less echo now and more voice. Something inside the tower knows we're here. I can feel it testing the edges of my mind like fingers tapping at glass. The ward's magic pulses with a sickening rhythm, each beat sending a fresh wave of corruption seeping into the stone. I cork the ink vial and step back from the gate, my skin crawling. "The ward isn't just an alarm," I say sharply to Merrin, who's still fiddling with those damned runes. "It's alive in some dark sense—conscious—and it's trying to worm its way into our minds." The magic here feels wrong. Twisted in a way I haven't encountered before. Varrika and Seraphine draw their weapons, eyes fixed on the doorway where shadows seem to cling with unnatural tenacity. Halie grips her holy symbol tighter, face pale but determined. We've got maybe seconds before whatever's inside decides to make an appearance. And I have a very bad feeling about this place—about what happens when dark magic touches my kind of sorcery. I raise one hand, dark energy coiling around my fingers as I prepare a spell. "Listen carefully," I say, voice low and urgent. "The ward's pull feels like hooks trying to drag us inwards. Don't let it grab hold. Resist it—push back with your will." My wings tighten against my back instinctively. "And if any of you feel something... wrong... in your head, tell me immediately."

The ground shudders again, more violently this time. The runes flare brighter, casting grotesque shadows across everyone's faces. Whatever is coming, it won't be pleasant. I need to map the ward's trigger points fast—find a safe entry method before whatever's inside decides to say hello properly. The whispering voice grows louder still, words almost forming now: "Come... closer..." It sounds hungry.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

The air around us feels wrong—heavy and thick with a palpable malice I've never encountered before. The ward's energy is alive in the most profane sense, and I can feel it straining against my faith like a physical force. Merrin, don't! Those runes are saturated with dark magic. Even brushing them could trigger something terrible. We need to find another way in—one that doesn't require direct contact. Jeane's ink tracing might work, or perhaps there's a hidden latch we've overlooked. Varrika, put your sword away for now. Rushing in blindly serves no purpose but to feed whatever lies within. We must proceed with caution and respect for this place's power. I draw my holy symbol close, focusing on its pure energy as an anchor against the creeping corruption.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika's eyes narrow as the ward pulses with an ominous blue glow. The whispers grow louder, more insistent, and she can feel the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. She grips her mace tightly, the weight of it familiar in her callused hands. "Looks like we've run out of time for sneaking in," she grunts, her gravelly voice cutting through the eerie silence of the tower's entrance. "Whatever's in there knows we're here now."

She glances at Merrin, still hunched over the lock, and then at Jeane, who's tracing strange patterns on the stone with a vial of shimmering ink. "You two best hurry up with whatever it is you're doing. The rest of us will keep watch."

Varrika takes a step forward, peering into the shadowy hallway beyond the gate. The darkness seems to thicken, as if alive, and she resists the urge to step back. "I don't like this," she mutters, more to herself than to the others. "Too many things that go bump in the night. But a job's a job, and we've come this far."

She turns to Seraphine, who's standing tense beside her, sword at the ready. "Stay sharp, wizard. I get the feeling we're about to have some unwelcome company."
