As Merrin reaches for the lockpicks, the glowing runes on the gate surge in intensity, bathing the entrance in an eerie blue light. The air seems to vibrate with the ward's energy, making it difficult for the party to discern any specific trigger points. Halie holds up her Silver Holy Symbol, and its light washes over the runes, momentarily disrupting the ward's magic. The disruption causes the runes to flicker, casting an unstable pattern of light across the gate. The pulsing blue glow stabilizes, and a low, ominous hum fills the air. The darkness beyond the gate appears to be shifting, as if something within is stirring. A faint whispering grows louder, urging Merrin onward, but it's now tinged with a note of warning.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps closer to examine the runes as Merrin approaches them. She traces their patterns with her eyes, her expression grim but focused. The magic here feels wrong—twisted and hungry in a way she hasn't encountered before. The sorceress speaks softly, more to herself than to the others. The ward is designed to pull at the darkest parts of your essence. I can feel it trying to corrupt me even now. She turns to Merrin as the rogue reaches for her lockpicks. Merrin, be careful with those locks, Jeane warns, her voice carrying an undercurrent of genuine concern. We don't need to feed this thing more power than necessary.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's nimble fingers hover over the lock, the glowing runes casting eerie shadows across her face. She takes a deep breath, trying to ignore the way the magic seems to pulse in time with her heartbeat. "Alright, you hungry little wards," she mutters under her breath. "Let's see if we can't find a way around you without feeding you any more power."

She selects a particularly fine lockpick, its tip still sharp and untarnished from years of use. With utmost delicacy, she begins to probe the lock, her other hand poised to spring back at the first sign of trouble. The runes flicker as she works, their light seeming to dim slightly with each twist of the pick. "Jeane," Merrin calls over her shoulder, not taking her eyes off the lock. "You get anything from those runes? Any weak points we can exploit?"

The sorcerer shakes her head, a furrow in her brow. "Nothing clear yet. But I can feel it... twisting at the edges of my mind. Like it's trying to worm its way in."

Merrin shudders, though she tries not to let it show. "Well, let's hope it doesn't have any friends in there with it," she quips, even as her hands tremble slightly. She takes a deep breath, focusing on the lock before her. "Because if we're right about the wards, we've got a narrow window here. And I'd rather not spend any more time than necessary in this place."

With that, she redoubles her efforts, working the lock with a skill born of countless hours of practice. The runes continue to flicker and pulse, but slowly, surely, Merrin feels the mechanism begin to give way. Just a little more...

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie stared at the flickering runes, her silver cross pendant held out like a shield against unseen corruption. "We should back away," she said firmly. "I've felt this magic before—it's not meant to protect anything. It's meant to feed." She grabbed Merrin's wrist as the rogue reached for the lock. "Stop. Let me try something first."

Halie stepped forward, the symbol in her hands blazing with pure white light that seemed to war with the blue corruption seeping from the stone. "If we're careful," she muttered, more to herself than the group, "if we're patient and smart... maybe we can starve this thing instead of giving it more power."
