The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance now ajar with a dark, musty hallway stretching into the depths within, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step closer to the pulsing runes, my eyes narrowing as I focus on the intricate patterns carved into the stone. 'These wards are more complex than they appear,' I mutter, tracing one of the symbols with a gloved finger. 'They're not just meant to keep us out—they're designed to test our worthiness.' A shiver runs down my spine, but it's not from fear. It's anticipation, the thrill of unraveling ancient magic that predates even my long lifespan. I turn to Merrin, already moving forward with a plan forming in my mind. 'Merrin, your skills with locks may be needed here, but these runes are likely magical as well as physical.' My gaze sweeps across the group, and I can feel the tension in the air, thick enough to cut with my mace—though I'd much rather use subtler tools first. 'We need to find the keystone, the rune that controls all the others.'

'Seraphine,' I continue, my voice taking on a more commanding tone as I gesture for her to join me at the entrance, 'prepare an enchantment—something that might temporarily disrupt dark magic wards if we trigger them. We don't want to stumble into a trap we can't escape from.' My wings shift restlessly behind me, and I resist the urge to flex them fully. I glance back at Halie, noting her apprehension. It's understandable—the air is thick with malevolent energy—but I've faced worse in my centuries of life. 'Halie,' I say, my voice softer now as I meet her eyes, 'your faith could be our shield against whatever dark magic is woven into these wards.' I pause, then add with a hint of amusement, 'Just try not to invoke any light-based spells at the entrance—we don't need to announce our arrival quite so dramatically.'

The runes pulse beneath my scrutiny, their light growing more intense as if responding to my focus. I can feel them testing me, probing at the edges of my mind with oily tendrils of dark energy. 'These wards aren't meant to keep us out forever,' I mutter, more to myself than to the group. 'They're designed to let something in—something they deem worthy.' A small smile plays across my lips as I consider that we might just be what they're waiting for. I take a step back, giving Merrin and Seraphine room to work while I keep watch over the area with my heightened senses. The tower looms before us, its stones damp with age and neglect, but there's an undeniable energy emanating from within—an invitation wrapped in a threat. 'Let's not linger here by the entrance,' I warn the group. 'Whatever is inside this tower wants us to come to it on its terms. We should be ready for anything.'

My hand hovers near my crossbow, fingers twitching with anticipation as I scan the darkness beyond the doorway. The Time-Splitting Sword awaits us within these walls, and I intend to claim it—no matter what horrors we must face or alliances we must... forge along the way.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie steps forward, examining the tower entrance with growing apprehension. The air feels wrong—sticky and heavy with something ancient and malevolent. She traces the dark runes etched into the stone, her fingers tingling unpleasantly. "These wards are no joke," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "They're not meant to keep us out—they're designed to let...something...in." Her blue-grey eyes scan the shadows beyond the doorway, searching for movement. She can't shake the feeling that they're being watched. "You shouldn't touch those," she warns Merrin as the rogue moves closer with tools in hand. "The magic feels wrong—sticky and ancient." Halie's gaze flickers to Seraphine next. "I need you ready with a ward against dark magic. Something strong enough to protect us all if these wards react." Her voice carries both command and genuine concern. This isn't the kind of situation where she wants to be anyone's bitch, but right now? She'll take whatever help she can get. Varrika's eagerness to rush in makes Halie nervous. The fighter means well, but haste in a situation like this could be deadly. "Wait," Halie says firmly, stepping between her companion and the doorway. "We don't know what's waiting inside. We need to proceed with caution." She pulls out her own symbols of faith, silver gleaming faintly in the dim light. "Let me go first. If anything tries to possess us or drain our souls, I might be able to handle it."

She turns to Jeane, eyes narrowing slightly. "And you—don't try any wild magic experiments near those runes unless absolutely necessary. We don't know what kind of feedback loop that could cause." The sorcerer means well too, but her curiosity can sometimes lead them into trouble. Halie takes a deep breath, steeling herself. "Alright. Everyone ready?" Without waiting for a response, she steps through the doorway into the darkness beyond, silver symbols held high and senses alert for any sign of malevolent presence.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin approaches the ancient gate with trepidation, her keen eyes scanning the pulsing runes etched into its surface. The air feels thick and heavy with an otherworldly energy that sets her teeth on edge. "These wards are no joke," she mutters, her nimble fingers tracing the contours of the runes. "They're designed to keep out the living, but let in certain... entities."

She turns to the rest of the party, her expression a blend of apprehension and grim determination. "Halie, your faith could be our shield against whatever dark magic is woven into these wards. The rest of us will form a perimeter. Keep watch for any... unwelcome visitors."

Merrin's mind races with possibilities as she reaches for her tools. Whatever lies beyond this gate, they're not the only ones interested in what's inside. And that thought alone sends a chill down her spine, even as she steps forward to test the wards.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand at the threshold of the ancient tower, my eyes fixed on the pulsing runes etched into its heavy stone door. A shiver runs down my spine as I feel the dark power radiating from them, a palpable force that seems to reach out and caress my skin with icy fingers. These wards are no mere decoration; they are a barrier, a test of worthiness designed to repel those who are unworthy of what lies within.
The air in the chamber is thick with dust and the musty scent of age, yet beneath it all, there is something else – a faint, metallic tang that speaks of blood and suffering. It is a smell I have encountered before, in tomes that speak of dark rituals and the summoning of terrible things from other realms. I know too well what such sacrifices can bring forth.
I turn to face my companions, my expression grave. "We cannot simply force our way through these wards," I say, my voice a low murmur that cuts through the oppressive silence of the room. "They are not meant to be broken by brute strength alone. No, they are designed to let something... specific... pass through them."
My gaze drops to the floor, where strange symbols have been carved into the stonework. They form a complex pattern, a web of power that seems to hum with latent energy. "This is more than just a lock," I continue, pointing at the intricate lines. "It's a trapdoor spirit. An invitation. And whatever it is inviting... it's waiting for us inside."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika steps forward, her heavy boots crunching on the flagstones. She eyes the pulsing runes warily, the dark power radiating from them raising the hairs on the back of her neck. "Those wards are no joke," she grunts, hefting her mace. "We breach this gate, we do it smart. No rushing in half-cocked."

She turns to Jeane, who is examining the runes with intense focus. "You find any way to get us through without tripping their defenses?" The dwarf's voice is gruff, but there's an undercurrent of concern. Varrika's gaze sweeps over the tower entrance, taking in every detail. Her warrior's instincts are on high alert, ready for any threat that might come from within those dark walls. "Right then," she says, turning to Halie and Merrin. "Let's get a look at those wards up close. But keep your wits about you. Whatever's in there, it don't want us walking in easy-like."

She steps forward, her hand resting on the hilt of her mace, ready for whatever lies ahead in the depths of the accursed tower.
