Round 1

[Narrator | Narrator]
The room is a half‑fallen chapel, its stone walls cracked and slick with moss. A cold draft sweeps through the broken windows, carrying the distant rumble of thunder. Guttering candles flicker against damp timber beams, casting wavering shadows over a heavy oak table littered with maps, leather‑bound journals, a crowbar, and a silver holy symbol. The air smells of wet earth and old incense. Around the table sit Jeane, Halie, Merrin, Seraphine, and Varrika, all weary from days of travel yet alert. They have gathered because the village council has offered them a contract: retrieve the Time‑Splitting Sword from the accursed tower beyond the Whispering Woods, a task that could end the tower’s curse or doom them all. Success means the sword is secured and the tower sealed; failure could leave the woods haunted forever. The offer stands, and each must decide whether to accept, refuse, or set conditions.
[Jeane | Sorcerer]
Jeane leans back in her chair, dark eyes scanning each face around the table with cold assessment. This contract requires precision and hierarchy—things this ragtag collection often lacks. First: we need absolute clarity on what "retrieve" means. Are we merely to enter, locate the sword, and leave? Or is the task to unseal it from whatever dark guardians might be bound to its presence? These are distinct operations with vastly different risk profiles.
[Halie | Cleric]
I need to understand what "seal the tower" means after we retrieve the sword. If this is simply a heist where we take it and flee, that's one thing. But if we're meant to break whatever dark enchantments are holding the curse in place—that changes everything. I won't commit until we know exactly what success looks like and what kind of hell awaits us inside those walls.
[Merrin | Rogue]
I shift uncomfortably, my fingers drumming a nervous rhythm on the table. Look, I'm all for a good adventure and a hefty reward, but this tower sounds like trouble with a capital T. Undead skeletons, shadow demons, dark sorcerers—it's like a list of everything that gives me hives. I let out a strained chuckle. I've got a knack for getting in and out of sticky situations, but even I have my limits. Before we sign on for this, I need to know what kind of danger we're walking into. And more importantly—what's the payout if we make it back alive?
[Seraphine | Wizard]
I tap a finger against my lips, my eyes fixed on the map before me, tracing the faint lines that supposedly represent the tower's interior. The Time-Splitting Sword is said to be an artifact of immense power, able to split moments, to rewind and rewrite reality itself. Such a thing should never be wielded by mortal hands, yet here we are, being asked to pluck it from the grasp of unspeakable horrors. I look up, meeting each of your gazes in turn. My first concern is not for our lives, though they are undoubtedly at risk. It is for the very fabric of causality itself. If this sword truly exists, and if it can be used as legend claims, then its misuse could unravel the threads of fate. We must be certain beyond all doubt that we understand what we’re dealing with before we even consider stepping through those accursed gates.
[Varrika | Fighter]
Varrika shifts in her seat, the leather creaking beneath her weight as she leans forward, hands clasped tightly around a mug of strong tea. This is no ordinary job, that much is clear. She takes a sip, the warmth doing little to ease the tension knotting her shoulders. I've faced my share of horrors in my time, but this tower... it's got a stench about it that sets my teeth on edge.
