As the party begins to move cautiously down the staircase, the twisted reflections of themselves vanish, leaving behind a sense of eerie silence. The central rune's pulsing grows slightly less intense, but its power still draws the group in, casting an ominous glow over the chamber. Jeane carefully marks the trap that would have triggered if she'd stepped on the outer edge, using her telekinesis to protect herself and Varrika from falling debris. She then moves forward, signaling for Halie and Varrika to follow. As they proceed, a low rumble echoes through the tower, causing the ground beneath their feet to shudder. A section of the wall, previously hidden by the twisted reflections, slides open with a screech, revealing a narrow corridor that leads deeper into the tower's depths.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I feel it too—the tower is alive with hunger. Every stone seems to watch us. That central rune is pulsing now, brighter with each beat. Stepping on those outer edges would trigger something terrible, I'm certain of it. Jeane Cromwell's crimson eyes scan the descending staircase with predatory focus. This whole chamber stinks of death and magic gone wrong. We should mark the safe path carefully before proceeding further.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I approach Varrika's slumped form, my hand hovering near her shoulder but not quite touching. "That poison... it's spreading faster than I thought. We don't have much time." I glance at the oily darkness creeping along the floorboards, then back to Jeane's face. "If we're going to save her, we need to move. Now."

I'm not sure if I believe what I'm saying, but the alternative is unthinkable. The magic here... it feels wrong in a way I've never encountered before. My skin crawls, and my fingers ache to clutch my holy symbol for protection, but I resist the urge. We can't afford to draw attention. "Varrika needs us," I say, voice low and urgent. "And Merrin's already..." The words die on my tongue. No. Not yet. "We can still save her. Together." It sounds hollow even to me, but I push onward anyway. "What did you have in mind? Some kind of counter-spell? Divine intervention?"

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I stagger to my feet, the poison still burning in my veins but my will stronger. "Enough mopin' about." I growl, voice raspy with pain. "We've a job to do and a friend to save. That cursed blade's callin' to me like a banshee's wail."

I squint at the pulsing rune, the very air shimmering around it. "Whatever dark magic fuels this place, it don't want us here." I heft my mace, knuckles white on the worn wood. "But we ain't leavin' Merrin to whatever fate awaits us in them shadows."

I meet each of their eyes, seeing my own grim resolve reflected back at me. "We stay together, we watch each other's backs, and we face whatever horrors this tower holds. For Merrin, for ourselves, and for the light that guides us through this darkness."

With that, I step forward onto the cracked stones, every fiber of my being screaming at me to turn back. But I press on, into the unknown depths, my companions close behind. The tower seems to shift around us, ancient stones groaning as if in warning or anticipation. The path ahead is unclear, but one thing's certain - we'll face whatever comes together, or not at all. And may the gods help us all.
