The stone beneath Varrika's boots shifted ominously as she descended with heavy steps, the narrow staircase groaning under her considerable weight and gear load. The air grew thick with an unnatural stillness that made her scarred skin crawl, each breath drawing in dust mixed with something far older—ancient magic that tasted like decay and hunger. The chamber above had felt wrong, but this descent into the tower's guts was actively hostile.
She could feel it now, a vast malevolent presence coiled deep below, stirring to their intrusion. Her fighter's instincts screamed at her to retreat, to abandon this cursed quest before whatever slept here awoke fully. But the weight of responsibility pressed down heavier than any magic—Merrin needed them. Needed the sword they were risking everything to retrieve.
"Stay sharp," she growled back up the stairs, voice barely audible even to her own ears. The words felt hollow in this oppressive silence. She extended a calloused hand toward the next step, boot finding solid stone... until it didn't. The wood beneath gave way with a sickening crack, the entire staircase section collapsing like rotten timber.
Varrika's cry of surprise was cut short as she tumbled forward, gravity and adrenaline sending her plummeting down the remaining stairs. Her heavy mace flew from her grip, spinning end over end before clattering into darkness below. The dwarf woman hit the stone floor hard, momentum carrying her into a painful roll before she managed to stop herself against a cold wall.
She lay there for a moment, stunned, ribs aching, hands scraped raw. Then came the sound of shifting rubble above—Jeane and Halie rushing down to help. Varrika pushed herself upright with a grunt, ignoring the pain that shot through her side. "I'm fine," she called up, though every inch of her body screamed otherwise. "But this staircase is done for." She looked around at their new surroundings—a narrow chamber lit by pulsing magical runes, the air thick with the stench of decay and old magic.
Jeane's voice drifted down from above: "We don't need the sword bad enough to feed ourselves to this place, do we?" The succubus's words hung in the air between them, heavy with truth. Varrika met Halie's concerned gaze as the cleric descended carefully, then looked back at the darkness below where the mace had fallen.
"We can't turn back now," Varrika said finally, her voice tight but determined. "Merrin needs us. But we do this smartly." She flexed her bruised hands, feeling the familiar weight of purpose settling over her despite the pain and the oppressive magic pressing in from all sides. "Halie—bless this place if you can. We'll need all the protection we can get."
The pulsing runes seemed to brighten at her words, casting flickering shadows that danced across ancient stone walls covered in indecipherable symbols. Something shifted deep below—a low rumble that vibrated through the floor like a beast stirring from slumber. Varrika drew her backup dagger, the steel catching what little light there was as she moved to stand between the darkness and her companions.
"We move forward," she said, voice barely above a whisper but carrying the weight of command. "Together. And we watch each other's backs." She met Jeane's crimson eyes with her own steely gaze—a silent promise that no matter what waited in these depths, they would face it as one.
