The air in the chamber grew heavy with ancient magic as Varrika descended the narrow staircase, her senses straining against the palpable malevolence. Each stone step groaned under her weight, as if the very structure resented their intrusion. The stairs wound downward into darkness, and she could feel it—the pulsing heartbeat of something old and hungry waiting below.

At the bottom, the chamber opened like a gaping maw. The walls were carved with symbols that seemed to writhe when looked at directly, and in the center, a massive rune pulsed with sickly green light. Varrika's scarred hands tightened around her mace as she stepped onto the outer edge of the circle, the stone cold and slick beneath her boots.

"Speak, ancient guardian," she called out, her voice echoing in the confined space. "Show yourself if you dare!"

The response was immediate and violent. A crack appeared in the ceiling above the stairs, and a thick cloud of noxious gas erupted from the gap, filled with death magic that stank of decay and old blood. The force of the blast sent Varrika stumbling backward, her mace slipping from her grasp as she fought to maintain her balance.

Jeane, positioned near the top of the stairs, had already raised her crossbow, the steel bolt gleaming in the dim light. Her wings were pressed tightly against her back, the feathers visibly trembling with the effort of resisting the oppressive magic that made her skin crawl and ache. She fired without hesitation, the bolt embedding itself deep into the stone above the crack just as more gas began to pour out.

"Halie!" Jeane shouted, her crimson eyes fixed on their fallen companion. "Keep Merrin steady but don't use that healing potion yet—we don't know what this magic might do if it mixes with her condition!"

Halie crouched beside Merrin's contorted form, her gentle hands hovering uncertainly over the woman's body. The silver cross around her neck felt heavy, as if the goddess herself was weighing their sin in retrieving this thing. She whispered a prayer for Merrin's soul—assuming she had one left after what the sword had done to her.

When Varrika stumbled back after the magical explosion, Halie looked up, her blue-grey eyes wide with fear and determination. "What now?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "We can't leave Merrin like this, but we can't stay here either..."

Varrika's gaze swept the chamber, taking in every detail—the pulsing rune, the writhing symbols on the walls, the darkness beyond the circle's edge. She could feel it, the ancient power coiled beneath them like a sleeping dragon waiting to wake.

"We finish what we started," she said grimly, her voice firm despite the dread coiling in her gut. "Jeane, test those edges carefully—find a safe path across. Halie, keep Merrin stable but don't waste that potion unless it's life or death. We have a job to do, and by the gods, we'll see it through."

The rune pulsed again, brighter now—a central heartbeat of whatever cursed machine they were dancing on top of. Varrika knew they were playing a dangerous game, but the alternative was unthinkable. She wouldn't let Merrin's sacrifice be in vain.

The rune pulses again, brighter now—central heartbeat of whatever cursed machine we're dancing on top of. Halie, keep Merrin steady but don't use that healing potion yet—we don't know what this magic might do if it mixes with her condition!
