Phase: converging

The air in the chamber grew thick with ancient magic and the stench of decay, each pulse from the central rune sending fresh waves of wrongness crawling across exposed skin. Jeane's wings pressed tight against her back, feathers aching as if held against hot coals, every instinct screaming at her to flee before whatever hungry thing stirred below. The gas from above was seeping down now too—she could smell it, acrid and sweet like spoiled fruit and grave soil mixed together.
Varrika's grip on her wrist tightened reflexively as the staircase shuddered violently beneath them, a fresh crack appearing in the stone wall above their heads with an ominous groan. Sparks flew as a section of masonry collapsed, blocking their path back to safety with a thunderous finality. The whispering grew louder still, a chorus of insidious voices that seemed to caress the edges of thought itself.
Halie crouched beside Merrin's contorted form, her fingers brushing against cold skin in a gesture of desperate comfort. The silver cross around her neck felt heavy and useless, offering no protection from this kind of corruption that had already taken root so thoroughly. Varrika's eyes narrowed as she took in the scene before her—the twisted body on the ground, the pulsing rune casting its sickly green light across ancient stone, the blocked exit above—and a cold knot of apprehension formed in her gut.
But there was no time for fear or doubt. Not if they wanted to survive this cursed place and whatever lay beyond those descending stairs. Varrika stepped forward, mace held ready, her voice cutting through the oppressive silence like a blade. "Listen up," she growled, addressing the group with the authority born of hard-won experience. "We're not getting out that way now. The tower's collapsing around us—it's either face whatever's down there or take our chances with the rubble above." Her gaze swept across her companions' faces, searching for signs of wavering resolve. "So which is it? Forward into the dark, or back into the crumbling stone?"
