The air inside the newly discovered tunnel was thick with ancient dust and something else—something that made Halie's skin crawl. She adjusted her grip on her mace, eyes scanning the shadows for movement. "I don't like this," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. The stone beneath their feet felt wrong somehow, too smooth in places and unnaturally cold.

Jeane hovered near the back of the group, her wings instinctively half-spread as if ready to take flight at any moment. She could feel it—the malevolent presence lurking just beyond sight, watching them with patient hunger. The magic here was ancient beyond anything she'd encountered before—death magic, yes, but something more... alive somehow. "We should turn back," she said softly, her crimson eyes fixed on the darkness ahead.

Varrika pushed forward despite the growing dread that coiled around her gut. She was a fighter, dammit, and this cursed tower wasn't going to best her—not while there was breath left in her lungs. The stone floor trembled slightly underfoot as she moved deeper into the tunnel, each step "

I won't let Merrin end up like that again." Halie's voice cut through the oppressive silence, sharp with determination despite her fear. She positioned herself between the dwarf and the darkness ahead, one hand resting protectively on Merrin's chest while the other gripped her mace tightly.

Jeane shuddered as another wave of wrongness washed over her. The magic here was unlike anything she'd ever encountered—ancient and alive and hungry in a way that made her want to vomit. "Whatever you do," she shouted up to Varrika, "don't touch "

Varrika hesitated for only a moment before nodding curtly. "

Jeane retreated up the stairs as quickly as her wings would allow, emerging into the main chamber looking even more shaken than before. Her usually immaculate white hair was now disheveled, and her crimson eyes were wide with barely contained panic. "It's... it's alive," she gasped, collapsing against the wall opposite Halie and Merrin. "The magic downstairs—it's not just in the sword or the rune. It's the whole room somehow, breathing and thinking and..."

Her voice trailed off as another spasm wracked Merrin's body, this one more violent than the last. Halie grimaced as she struggled to keep the dwarf from injuring herself on the stone floor. "Easy now," she murmured, trying to soothe even as her own heart raced. The dark veins were spreading faster now, creeping across Merrir's chest and up her neck with alarming speed.

Varrika remained at the bottom of the stairs, frozen in place by the sheer wrongness of what she was experiencing. The sword on the altar pulsed with malevolent light, calling to her even as it repelled her—an impossible paradox that made her head ache just to think about it. She could feel something ancient and hungry stirring deep within the stone beneath her feet, something that had waited eons for...

No. She couldn't think like that. Couldn't give in to whatever this thing was trying to do to her mind. With a supreme effort of will, she turned away from the altar and began the slow climb back up to where Halie waited with Merrin's failing body.

By the time Varrika reached the top, both Halie and Jeane were looking at her with expressions that spoke volumes about their shared terror. Merrin lay unconscious now, her breathing shallow and labored, the dark veins having spread across nearly half her visible skin. Halie had positioned herself between the dwarf and the stairs leading down, one hand resting protectively on Merrin's chest while the other gripped her mace tightly.

"What did you see?" Jeane asked before Varrika could even open her mouth, her voice barely more than a frightened whisper. The succubus's wings were trembling now, visible even beneath her cloak—a sign of just how terrified she truly was.

Varrika took a deep breath, trying to steady herself before speaking. "A chamber," she said, her voice rough with suppressed fear. "And an altar... with a sword on it." She paused, then added reluctantly, "It's "

Jeane shuddered, her wings twitching involuntarily as another wave of wrongness washed over her. The magic here was like nothing she'd ever encountered—ancient and alive and hungry in a way that made her want to vomit. "Whatever you do," she shouted up to Varrika, "don't touch "

Halie looked up at Jeane, seeing the succubus's wings pressed tightly against her body and her face pale even by her standards. Whatever Jeane was feeling, it was bad— and if something scared a being made of magic as much as this did, then they were in far more danger than Halie had initially thought. She glanced down at Merrin, whose breathing had grown shallower and more labored since the last spasm. The dark veins on her skin seemed to pulse "

Jeane hesitated for only a moment before nodding and retreating up the stairs, her wings barely clearing the walls as she ascended. She emerged into the main chamber looking even more shaken than.
