The air inside the chamber grew thicker with each passing moment, pressing against them like a physical weight. Merrin, her halfling form dwarfed by the ancient stone walls, approached the central rune with cautious steps. The symbols etched into the rock pulsed with a sickly green light, their rhythm accelerating as she drew near. A faint hissing sound echoed through the narrow space, growing louder until it seemed to fill the entire chamber.

Seraphine, her sharp elven eyes narrowed in concentration, watched from a safer distance. "You're treading on dangerous ground, Merrin," she called out, her voice cutting through the tense air. "Those symbols... they pulse with an ancient magic, one I've only read about in forbidden tomes." The wizard's fingers traced arcane patterns as she reinforced her own protective wards, the magical energy shimmering around her.

Jeane moved closer to the glowing runes, her crimson eyes reflecting their malevolent light. "I don't trust this," the succubus sorcerer growled, her voluptuous form tensed for action. "But we didn't come all this way to turn back now." She gestured, drawing arcane symbols in the air with one clawed finger. The protective ward she cast shimmered around them, repelling the oppressive energy that seemed to seep from every stone.

Merrin paused, her hand hovering near the rune's surface as she considered Seraphine's warning. "Alright," she said finally, "here's the deal. That green light is getting brighter by the second, which means we've got a ticking clock on our hands." Her dark eyes met those of her companions. "Either we take a look-see in this here chamber or we high-tail it out of here before the whole tower comes crashing down around our ears."

The hissing grew louder still, and suddenly, a section of the wall shuddered and slid open with a grating sound. A narrow, dimly lit passage stretched beyond, leading deeper into the tower's heart. The air that rushed out was colder than ice, carrying with it the unmistakable stench of decay and ancient death magic.

Seraphine's face paled visibly. "By the Goddess..." she breathed, her hand instinctively moving to clutch at the silver holy symbol hanging around her neck. "That smell... that's not natural. We're dealing with something far more dangerous than mere traps here."

Jeane's wings unfurled slightly, a defensive gesture. "We knew this place was cursed," she hissed, her eyes never leaving the dark opening. "But this... this is beyond anything I've encountered before." The sorcerer's fingers twitched, ready to unleash arcane power at a moment's notice.

Merrin took a step back, her rogue's instincts screaming warnings. "Yeah," she muttered, "this just got a whole lot more complicated." She glanced at the others, a mix of apprehension and grim determination in her eyes. "So, what now? We press on into that death-stink chamber, or we cut our losses and get the hell out while we still can?"

The central rune pulsed again, brighter than ever before, its light casting stark shadows across their faces. The decision hung heavy in the air, as oppressive as the magic that seemed to suffocate the very space around them.
