As Merrin's rope creaks ominously, the central rune's pulse intensifies, and the air thickens, making it harder to breathe. The beam supporting Merrin's rope groans in protest, but holds. Varrika readies her mace, scanning the pit for any signs of movement or hidden dangers. Suddenly, a faint, acrid gas wafts up from the depths of the pit, carrying the stench of decay and corruption. The torches cast flickering shadows on the walls as the gas seeps up, threatening to spread. The air is now thick with an eerie, unnatural silence – as if the very presence of the party has muffled the whispers of the ancient tower.

Halie · Cleric

I step closer to the pit's edge, holding the torch high. "Merrin, wait." The air shifts, cold and heavy with something ancient and wrong. I pull my silver holy symbol out, grip it tight. "Those runes are alive somehow—I can feel them resisting. If you go down there, they might try to... to possess you or leech your life force."

I glance at Varrika's mace, then back to the pit. The torch flame flickers unnaturally. "We should have Merrin cast a spell before descending—ward herself against corruption or possession. Maybe Jeane knows something that could help." I'm not backing down, but I won't be reckless either. The Goddess gives me strength, not invincibility. I continue, voice measured: "And Varrika, if anything climbs out of that pit while Merrin's down there—" I stop myself from finishing the thought. "We need a signal. Something loud."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I take a step back from the pit's edge, my eyes narrowing as I study the pulsating runes with renewed intensity. The air here is thick, almost cloying now, and there’s an undeniable sense of malevolent presence emanating from their depths.
The central rune's light flickers like a dying star, casting eerie shadows across Merrin's face as she prepares her descent. It's clear this is no ordinary magic at work here - the runes themselves seem to be fighting against our intrusion, resisting with every ounce of their ancient power.
My mind races, trying to decipher the complex patterns and symbols etched into the stone. There has to be a key, some way to understand what we're facing before it’s too late.
The thought of Merrin descending into such an unknown danger is a knot of fear in my stomach, but I know our path forward requires risk. Every instinct screams that this is wrong, that we should turn back while we still can. Yet the promise of the Time-Splitting Sword, and the knowledge it could bring, keeps me rooted to the spot.
I turn to Halie, her torch illuminating the grim determination on her face. "Halie," I say, my voice a low murmur, "can you try a prayer of protection? Perhaps it will offer some resistance against whatever this is."
My gaze flicks back to Merrin, who is testing her rope with a firm tug. She meets my eyes, a silent question passing between us.
I give a small, resolute nod. We have come too far to turn back now. Whatever lies waiting in that pit, we will face it together.*

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I can feel it too, this wrongness pulsing up from below. The runes are fighting us—the tower itself is breathing ancient death magic through those carved channels, inhaling us like a corpse taking one last gasp. Merrin, listen carefully: you secure yourself down there, but if anything changes—if the light flickers differently or the air grows colder—I want you out immediately. We're not here to die exploring some wizard's grave; we're here for that sword and then out of this cursed place before it finishes collapsing around us. Halie, your torch closer to the edge might help Merrin see if something is seeping up like poisonous gas—ancient magic often carries physical manifestations. Varrika, I know you're ready with that mace, but remember: we don't just need to stay alive; we need to stay sane. This place feels wrong on a fundamental level. And Seraphine—I saw your face studying those runes like they were a puzzle instead of a death sentence. If you have theories about what's happening down there, speak them now before Merrin descends further. We need to understand this trap before we trigger it.
