As the party readies themselves to retrieve the Time-Splitting Sword, the air in the chamber grows thick with an eerie, pulsating energy emanating from the ancient runes. Seraphine's eyes widen as she examines the runes, her voice laced with concern, "The wards are destabilizing! We must tread carefully, or risk unraveling the very fabric of time itself!" Suddenly, the torch on Halie's hand flickers wildly, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The flames dance in time with the pulsating energy, making Merrin's heart hammer with unease. Halie stumbles backward, nearly dropping the torch, as a faint hissing sound echoes through the chamber. The party's attention is drawn to a narrow, winding pipe running along the wall, its entrance now gaping open, releasing a noxious cloud of gas into the room. The air grows thick with an acrid smell, and the party knows they must act quickly to avoid being overwhelmed.

Jeane · Sorcerer

The runes crawl across the stone like hungry insects, pulsing brighter as we approach. I can taste the ancient magic in this air - thick and cold and wrong. The Time-Splitting Sword likely carries a curse that could shatter time itself if handled carelessly. We need to retrieve it without keeping it for ourselves, but how? Touching it might trigger its own dire enchantments. The tower groans around us, stone shifting ominously. One wrong move and this whole cursed place could come crashing down. Merrin's ready with that mace, at least - she understands the danger even if Halie seems more interested in keeping her distance. Varrika's examining those knots like they hold the secrets of the universe. I step closer to the pit, wings folding tight against my back. The runes around the edge pulse faster as I approach. 'Merrin,' I say, voice barely above a murmur. 'Grab that rope. Slowly.' My fingers trace the patterns etched into the stone - wards designed to repel or contain something ancient and powerful. These aren't simple protective sigils. They're meant to hold back... something worse. The air grows thicker, colder. Something's watching us from beyond those shifting shadows. I don't believe in ghosts, not really, but this place feels alive with malevolent intent. Every instinct screams warning. We need that sword - the quest demands it - but at what cost?

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step forward cautiously, mace at the ready, and snag the rope from the pit's edge with my free hand. The air feels heavy, laden with dark energies I can't quite grasp. I secure the rope with Halie's help, her face etched with concern. "Alright, Varrika," I call over my shoulder, keeping my voice low. "Think you can grab that rope without disturbing whatever's in there? No sudden moves now."

My heart hammers against my ribs as I watch Varrika prepare to retrieve the sword. The runes pulse ominously, and I can practically taste the magic on my tongue. We're dancing with powers beyond our comprehension, and one wrong step could unravel everything. I keep my eyes peeled for any sign of undead or other threats lurking in the shadows. The Hermit's warning echoes in my mind: 'The tower's instability grows; the runes are warning you.' I just hope we can get what we came for and make it out alive, curse or no curse. But as Varrika reaches into the pit, the energy in the room shifts. A noxious mist starts to fill the chamber, and the ancient runes activate with an ominous red glow. We may have just triggered something we can't control... The runes pulse faster, their energy destabilizing the wards around us. The air grows thick with an eerie, pulsating presence. I grip my mace tighter, ready for anything. "Careful now," I mutter to Varrika, "we don't know what we're dealing with here."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch in grim fascination as the runes pulse faster, their ancient script seeming to writhe against the stone. The air grows heavy and thick with an otherworldly energy, raising the fine hairs on my arms. This is no mere magical lock; this is a warning system, a last desperate line of defense against those who would steal the Time-Splitting Sword.
My gaze sweeps over the chamber, taking in the ominous red glow seeping from the cracks between the stones. It feels like the very walls are breathing, drawing in a deep breath before expelling it in a shuddering sigh. A chill slithers down my spine as I imagine what might be stirring beneath this crumbling facade.
I step closer to the pit, my robes whispering against the flagstones. The noxious mist swirls at my feet, clinging to my ankles like a living thing. Merrin’s warning about traps echoes in my mind, but there is no choice now. We must proceed or risk being overwhelmed by whatever forces we have awakened.
I raise my hand, fingers outstretched towards the rune-engraved gate. The magic thrumming through it feels like a heartbeat, strong and insistent. It pulses against my palm, a silent challenge. I can almost hear its voice, a faint whisper carried on the wind: "Turn back now, or face the consequences of your curiosity".
But curiosity is what brought me here, what drives me to seek knowledge of the forbidden arts. And now, as the runes begin to unravel around us, their ancient power unfurling like a snake, I wonder if this was the price all along: the cost of knowledge, paid in the currency of our own souls.
