Round 23

Phase: converging

The chamber air thickened with ancient decay as the central rune pulsed brighter. Merrin fell into the pit, Varrika tossed her a rope. The skeletons in the depths grew more active, their bones rattling ominously. Jeane circled the perimeter warily, the magic here old beyond measure and hungry for new souls. Merrin clutched the offered rope tightly, his knuckles white against the rough hemp fibers. He'd faced plenty of dangers in his career as a rogue—bandits, monsters, rival thieves guilds—but something about this place felt... wrong. Not just dangerous, though danger was certainly present. The pit below gaped like an open mouth waiting to swallow them whole, and the dwarf's usual bravado faltered ever so slightly.
Seraphine stood near the entrance, her sharp elven eyes narrowed in concentration as she studied the intricate carvings surrounding the central rune. The wizard's fingers traced patterns in the air, mimicking the movements of the magical symbols before her. Her mind raced, trying to decipher their purpose, to understand the nature of the power contained within this chamber. This was exactly the kind of forbidden knowledge she'd devoted her life to studying, yet now that she was face-to-face with it, a deep unease settled in her gut. The stone feels warm beneath my hands, almost feverishly so. And I taste copper in the air, thick and decaying. Something old is waking down here.
Jeane recognized those runes—they were warding spells, ancient and powerful. The stone felt warm under her hands, almost feverishly so. And she tasted copper in the air, thick and decaying. Something old was waking down here. Merrin, grab that rope. Varrika, examine every knot and tie—we need this secure. Halie, your torchlight reveals more of these crawling marks. The stones arrange themselves in a slow, deliberate pattern like hearts buried alive. We retrieve that sword, but we don't touch it. Not until we understand its curse. The Time-Splitting Sword...
Merrin knew those patterns—they were warding spells, ancient and powerful. The stone felt warm under his hands, almost feverishly so. And he tasted copper in the air, thick and decaying. Something old was waking down here. The pit yawned like a hungry mouth waiting to swallow them whole, and Varrika's usual direct approach seemed suddenly... ill-advised. Not the time for her usual "smash first, ask questions later" strategy. He eyed the rope warily—one wrong move could send him tumbling into whatever waited below.
Seraphine began casting a spell of revelation, her hands moving in complex patterns as arcane energy swirled around her fingertips. The air shimmered around her extended senses, revealing faint threads of energy connecting the various symbols across the room. These wards are complex and powerful—designed to protect something valuable, or perhaps contain something dangerous. The stone carvings writhe like living things before my eyes, their patterns shifting ominously with each beat of the central rune's pulse. This magic is wrong, corrupted by dark powers long ago.
Jeane moved closer to examine what Merrin was pointing out, her wings half-spread for balance as she crouched down to study the stonework more closely. The stones shift slightly under my fingers as I apply gentle pressure to specific points—too much force here could trigger the trap, too little would do nothing. The runes pulse like hearts buried alive. Whatever these guardians are guarding... it matters. Matters enough that ancient magic keeps them animated after millennia.
Merrin bit his lip hard, forcing himself to focus despite the pressure. He began working through the sequence in his mind, visualizing each step and its potential consequences. The stones shift slightly under my fingers as I apply gentle pressure to specific points—too much force here could trigger the trap, too little would do nothing. Seraphine traced the invisible boundary with careful gestures, her expression growing graver by the moment. "This... it looks like a schematic of the entire tower," she said, her voice tight with tension. "And there are multiple locations marked here—other chambers, other sealed areas..." She began moving around the chamber, examining different sections of the carvings with increasing urgency. "Oh no," she breathed, stepping back instinctively. "You're right. And look—they're all connected by these lines..." She traced a faint pattern with her finger, following what looked like an energy flow or transportation network between different parts of the tower.
Jeane's face drained of color as the implications sank in. "A necromantic power grid," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Each chamber serves as a... focus point for the ritual. And they're all connected—meaning..." She looked up at the others, her expression grim. "...activating or deactivating one chamber could potentially affect all of them."
Merrin let out a low whistle, running a hand through his hair. "So not only do we have to figure out what this damn thing does," he said, more to himself than anyone else, "but we might have to perform some kind of creepy necromantic ritual to undo it?" He shook his head. "Because here I thought being a rogue meant mostly avoiding magical bullshit."
