Shadow of the Ancients / Run 012 / Main Story
Round 21 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As the party hesitates, the central rune pulses brighter, illuminating the dark chamber. The air seems to vibrate with an otherworldly energy, as if the runes are trying to communicate a warning. Suddenly, a section of the stone floor gives way beneath Merrin's feet, and she finds herself teetering on the edge of a hidden pit. The sound of shifting stone echoes through the chamber, and the party realizes that the tower's instability is growing by the minute. The rope on the wall creaks, and Halie's eyes widen as she realizes it's not just a simple pulley system. The rope appears to be tied to a series of ancient mechanisms, which could potentially be used to retrieve the Time-Splitting Sword without direct contact. However, the mechanisms are intricately complex, and Varrika will need to carefully examine them before attempting to use them. Merrin's precarious balance is the immediate pressure, as she must decide whether to try and steady herself or take a chance on the rope's potential to save the party.
I step forward, my heavy mace gripped firmly in my scarred hands. "None of us are leaving Merrin behind," I growl, my voice echoing in the chamber. "Varrika, Halie - get a torch down there. Seraphine, I want you thinking on how we can retrieve that sword without setting off any more traps."
My eyes dart to Jeane, who's studying those accursed runes like they hold the secrets of the universe. "Sorceress, you've seen this before? In your forbidden books and such?"
She nods, her expression grim. "Something like it. Old death magic, containment wards. Whatever lies below us... it's stirring now that we've entered its domain."
I let out a sharp breath through my teeth. Magic's never sat right with me, but I know enough to trust Jeane's expertise. "Alright then. We're not leaving without Merrin and that sword. But we do this smart, not brave. Varrika?"
The dwarf nods, already uncoiling the rope from her pack. "On it, boss."
I turn to Halie, who's looking green around the gills. "Halie, light. We need to see what we're dealing with down there."
She nods mutely, fumbling for the tinderbox. As the torch flares to life, casting eerie shadows on the stone walls, I feel a grim sense of purpose settle over me. We've come this far - we won't turn back now. Whatever lies ahead, we'll face it together. Or we'll die trying.
I circle the central rune warily, recognizing its style from forbidden texts I wish I'd never encountered during my studies in the darker corners of academia. "Stop circling," I snap at myself, more a command than an observation. The air is saturated with old death magic—centuries of it, thick and cloying enough to taste iron on my tongue. The markings are an ancient containment ward holding something far worse than the skeletons we've already encountered. Whatever lies below us... I can feel it stirring now that we've entered its domain. Touching the sword directly is a death wish wrapped in a curse, likely designed by a madman who thought time itself was his plaything. We need to be clever, not brave. The Time-Splitting Sword may be our only salvation from this place, but retrieving it requires finesse, not force of arms or arcane might. I keep my mace ready—physical threats are the least of our worries here—but focus on the riddle before us. Merrin's warning about the sword is well-founded; Varrika's eagerness to charge in there speaks to her warrior's heart but lacks tactical sense. Halie... I can feel her fear through the stone, a palpable thing that might make her reckless if we don't manage expectations. The central rune pulses again as I speak, its light bleeding into shades of angry crimson. Whatever it contains, whatever power fuels this place, it's reacting to our presence—or perhaps Merrin's near-fall has disturbed something deeper within the tower's bowels. "Merrin," I call out, my voice carrying unnatural authority in these cursed halls, "keep your mace ready—skeletons are the least of what might crawl up from below." To Varrika and Seraphine: "I want ideas involving no direct contact with that cursed bauble. Think like thieves, not conquerors."
My wings twitch involuntarily—a tell I've never mastered despite decades of controlling my reactions. The thickening malevolence here makes even my demonic nature uneasy. We need to retrieve the sword without keeping it for ourselves... and without becoming its next victims.
I wince as my feet slip on the crumbling stone, sending me tumbling into the pit below. The breath is knocked out of me as I land hard on my backside, my heavy pack absorbing some of the impact. I look up to see concerned faces peering down at me from the edge. "Merrin!" Halie's voice echoes in the cavernous space. "Are you alright?"
I push myself up, wincing as I test my limbs. Nothing seems broken, but my pride is definitely bruised. "I'm fine," I call back, trying to keep the pain from my voice. "Just... give me a moment."
I shine my torch into the pit, illuminating the rough-hewn walls and the rope dangling tantalizingly out of reach. My eyes narrow as I spot something glinting in the shadows at the bottom. Could it be...? I crouch, straining to get a better look. Whatever it is, it's too far down to reach without risking another tumble. I'll need help getting up there. "Varrika," I call out, my voice echoing in the chamber. "Think you could lend a hand? Or a rope?"
As I wait for a response, I can't shake the feeling that we're being watched. The air feels thick with anticipation, like the very stones are holding their breath. I keep my torch at the ready, one hand on the hilt of my mace. Whatever's down here with us, I intend to be prepared.
