The chamber's air grows heavy with ancient magic as the central rune pulses brighter, its red light casting ominous shadows across the stone walls. Merrin stumbles, her foot finding no purchase where solid stone should be, and she falls into a waiting pit with a startled cry. Varrika steps forward immediately, her scarred hands tightening on the haft of her heavy mace.

"None of us are leaving Merrin behind," the dwarf growls, her voice echoing in the confined space. "Get a torch down there—now." Her eyes flick to Jeane, who's circling the perimeter with predatory grace, wings held close against the oppressive magic. "Sorceress, you've seen this before? In your forbidden books and such?"

Jeane's crimson eyes gleam in the torchlight as she meets Varrika's gaze. "Stop circling," she mutters to herself, more command than observation. The air here is thick with old death magic, centuries of it clinging to every stone surface like dust. She can taste the iron tang on her tongue, feel it prickling along her skin.

"Whatever lies below us..." Jeane begins, then stops, shaking her head. "The markings are an ancient containment ward—holding something far worse than the skeletons we've encountered so far." Her wings shift restlessly, a subconscious gesture of unease.

Merrin pushes herself up from the stone floor of the pit, wincing as pain flares in her ankle. The fall was harder than she'd first thought, but no bones seem broken—just bruises and scraped pride. She looks up to see Varrika glaring down at her with fierce protectiveness.

"Merrin!" Halie's voice echoes from above, filled with concern. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," Merrin calls back, forcing confidence into her voice. "Just... clumsy." She glances around the pit's walls, noting the telltale signs of recent disturbance—fresh scrapes in the stone, disturbed dust. Someone—or something—has been down here recently.

The central rune pulses again, its light intensifying briefly before settling back into a steady glow. The entire chamber seems to hum with contained energy, vibrating just below the threshold of hearing. Jeane's wings twitch nervously as she completes her circuit, coming to stand beside Varrika at the pit's edge.

"We need to be careful here," she says quietly, her gaze fixed on the pulsing rune. "This magic... it's not meant to keep people out. It's meant to keep something in." Her fingers trace the air around the ward, as if reading invisible sigils. "And whatever that is... it knows we're here now."

Varrika spits to one side, her grip on the mace relaxing slightly. "Great. Just what we needed—another reason not to touch anything." She glances at Merrin again, then back to Jeane. "Sorceress, can you tell what kind of magic this is? And more importantly... how do we disable it without releasing whatever's trapped inside?"

Jeane's expression darkens further, her wings shifting in a gesture that speaks volumes about her discomfort. "The magic itself is ancient—predates most known civilizations by centuries. The ward is complex, layered..." She trails off, brow furrowing as she concentrates. "Disabling it completely would require... extensive knowledge and preparation. We could potentially create a localized disruption to retrieve the sword, but that carries its own risks."

Merrin tests her footing carefully, finding a secure spot near the pit's edge. "What kind of risks?" she asks, already dreading the answer.

Jeane meets her gaze, crimson eyes serious. "The ward might collapse entirely, releasing whatever's contained within. Or it could backlash, targeting us specifically." She glances at the pulsing rune again. "Either way, we'd be dealing with something far more dangerous than a few skeletons."

Varrika grunts, considering this information. "So our choices are: trigger a potential disaster trying to disable the ward, or find some other way to grab the sword without messing with it directly." She looks at Merrin. "Any bright ideas down there?"

Merrin runs a hand through her hair, thinking quickly. The fall has rattled her more than she'd like to admit, but adrenaline is kicking in now. "We could try... I don't know, using the rope to lower someone down with a hook or something? Grab the sword without touching the ward directly?" She glances around the pit again. "Or maybe there's another way out—some kind of passage that bypasses the ward entirely?"

Jeane shakes her head slowly. "The ward extends throughout this entire chamber, Merrin. There are no safe bypass routes." She crouches down, examining the stonework at the pit's edge with keen interest. "But... perhaps we don't need to disable the entire ward. If we can create a temporary disruption—just long enough to retrieve the sword—we might minimize the risk."

Varrika leans forward, studying Jeane's examination. "How would that work, exactly?"

Jeane straightens, her expression thoughtful. "The ward is powered by several key sigils—if we could temporarily disrupt just one or two..." She trails off, lost in calculation.

Merrin shifts her weight, wincing as pain flares in her ankle again. "Disrupt how? And more importantly, what happens if it goes wrong?"

Jeane's wings shift restlessly as she considers the options. "We could use a focused magical discharge to overload one of the sigils temporarily—create a localized 'blind spot' in the ward." She meets Merrin's gaze. "As for what happens if it goes wrong... best case, we trigger a partial collapse and have to deal with whatever's contained here on a smaller scale. Worst case..." She doesn't finish the sentence, but her expression says it all—complete disaster.

Varrika spits again, this time closer to Jeane's feet than before. "Love those options," she growls. "So we're choosing between 'bad' and 'worse' here." She looks at Merrin. "Any other ideas from the bottom of our favorite pit?"

Merrin shakes her head, frustrated. "Not off the top of my head..." She trails off as something catches her eye—a faint seam in the stone wall opposite the pit's edge. Moving closer, she examines it more carefully. The seam seems too regular to be natural—stonework, perhaps?

"Hey," she calls up to the others. "There's something here. Looks like... a hidden mechanism or something?" She runs her fingers along the seam, feeling for any give or hidden triggers.

Jeane moves to the pit's edge, leaning down to get a better look at what Merrin has discovered. Her wings extend slightly for balance, then fold back as she concentrates on the stonework.

"Interesting," she murmurs, more to herself than anyone else. "That seam... it doesn't match the rest of the construction." She reaches out, her fingers tracing the same path Merrin's had taken. "There might be a trigger mechanism here—something to open a hidden passage or..." Her words trail off as she feels something shift minutely under her touch.

Varrika moves closer, peering down into the pit. "What have you found?"

Jeane straightens up, excitement evident in her voice despite the gravity of their situation. "I think... I think we might have just found our solution." She meets Merrin's gaze. "This could be a secondary entrance—perhaps designed to allow maintenance access to the ward without disabling it completely."

Merrin feels a surge of hope despite the lingering pain in her ankle. "So we don't need to mess with the ward at all? Just find this hidden passage and retrieve the sword that way?"

Jeane nods slowly, her expression still serious but less grim than before. "In theory, yes. But we'll need to be careful—if this mechanism is connected to the ward in any way..." She doesn't finish the thought, but her meaning is clear.

Varrika grunts, considering this new information. "Well, at least it's something." She looks around the chamber, then back to Jeane and Merrin. "Alright. Sorceress, you keep studying that mechanism. Merrin, see if you can find any obvious triggers—pressure points or hidden levers."

Merrin nods, already moving along the stone seam with careful fingers. The stone feels cold and ancient under her touch, but there's definitely something here—a slight give in one section when she applies pressure just so.

"Found something," she calls up softly. "There's a section here that... shifts, maybe?" She presses more firmly, feeling resistance give way gradually.

Jeane leans down further, watching Merrin's progress with keen interest. "Good—slow and steady. Let me know if you feel any magical discharge or unusual sensations." Her wings extend slightly for balance as she shifts her weight.

The stone section slides aside with a grating sound that echoes unnervingly in the chamber. Dust falls from the newly revealed gap, and Merrin coughs, waving it away from her face.

"Success?" she asks hopefully, peering into the darkness beyond the opening.

Jeane's expression is hard to read in the flickering torchlight, but her tone is cautious when she responds. "Potentially. But we don't know what's waiting for us inside." She looks up at Varrika. "This could be exactly what we need—a safe passage around the ward. Or it could be another trap entirely."

Varrika grunts in acknowledgment, her hand still resting on her mace. "Either way, we need to check it out." She glances around the chamber again, noting the pulsing rune and the unstable stonework. "But first... Merrin, can you climb back up here? We don't know what might be waiting in that passage, and I'd rather not have our rogue stuck down there if something goes wrong."

Merrin nods, already moving to the rope hanging beside the pit. She secures it around herself with practiced ease, then looks up at Varrika.

"Alright," she says, voice steady despite her lingering discomfort. "Let's get me back up here."
