As Halie steps closer to the pedestal, her torch casts an eerie glow on the Time-Splitting Sword, illuminating the pulsating aura on its hilt. The central rune's malevolent energy surges, causing the air to crackle with electricity. A faint whispering grows louder, echoing through the room: "You shall not leave this place unscathed." Suddenly, the pedestal begins to shudder violently, and the sword's vibration intensifies, causing the ground to tremble beneath Varrika's feet. A loud creaking sound echoes through the chamber as one of the ancient gate's stone slabs shifts, revealing a narrow corridor beyond. The Force stirs, as if sensing the party's intentions, and Jeane's arcane senses tingle with warning, detecting an unseen presence watching from the shadows.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the arcane sigils in the air again, my fingers leaving faint trails of phosphorescent energy. The central rune pulses brighter now—as if responding to our presence, or perhaps our trepidation. I call out, voice steady despite the apprehension coiling cold in my gut: 'The sword vibrates with warning. Whatever magic binds it, whatever entity watches from the shadows between these stones—it knows we're here and it doesn't want us leaving.'

My wings unfurl instinctively—a deliberate display of power, a way to push back against this oppressive darkness that feels like it's seeping into my very skin. The leather catches the torchlight, casting flickering shadows across Merrin's tense face as she scans the chamber, mace gripped ready. Halie's light trembles—fear or excitement, I can't tell which—but her voice remains clear when she speaks: 'The magic feels wrong here. Ancient and hungry.'

I circle the pedestal slowly, arcane sight peeled wide for any trace of trap or ward. The runes etched into its stone surface writhe under my gaze—yes, definitely active magic, but I can't parse their full purpose yet without risking... something. 'The sword's vibration is intensifying,' I note to no one in particular, more to hear the words aloud than for any real need to announce what everyone already feels. The ground shudders beneath our feet as if agreeing. Varrika shifts her weight, mace held at the ready—always prepared to smash first and ask questions later, bless her simplistic warrior heart. But even she looks uneasy now, eyes darting between the pulsing rune and the vibrating sword. When she speaks, it's with unusual hesitation: 'The tower feels... alive. Like it doesn't want us here.'

I pause mid-circle, focusing my arcane senses outward—not just on the immediate chamber but through the walls into the darkness beyond. The ancient magic here is thick enough to choke on; death-magic residue clings to every stone like dust. But there's something else too—something newer and far more malevolent than mere lingering energies of long-dead defenders. The air crackles with electricity, and I know without doubt that whatever entity inhabits this place has just stepped up its game in response to our presence by the pedestal. The central rune flares brighter still—an unmistakable warning signal—and a low humming sound begins to vibrate through the stone at our feet. I straighten, wings folding tight against my back as I face the others properly for the first time since we entered this cursed place. My voice is sharp with urgency now: 'We need to decide fast—do we try to claim the sword immediately and risk whatever trap or curse it carries? Or do we fall back and attempt to figure out how to disable its defenses first?'

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's gaze darts between the pulsing rune and the vibrating sword, her brow furrowed in concentration. The oppressive malevolence in the air seems to thicken with every passing moment, and she can feel the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. "Something's not right," she mutters under her breath, her voice barely audible over the growing hum of dark energy. "We've barely scratched the surface of this tower and already things are getting... hairy."

She takes a cautious step forward, her hand reaching for the hilt of her dagger as she scans the shadows for any signs of movement or hidden threats. The ground beneath her feet seems to shudder with each passing second, and she can't shake the feeling that the tower itself is alive and watching their every move. "We need to be careful here," she warns, her voice laced with a stew of apprehension and defiance. "There's no telling what kind of traps or curses this place might have in store for us."

She looks up at the others, her eyes narrowing as she tries to gauge their reactions. Halie seems to be deep in prayer, her lips moving silently as she clutches her holy symbol. Varrika has her mace at the ready, her muscles coiled tight with tension. And Jeane... Jeane's eyes are glazed over, as if she's seeing something that no one else can. "What do you see, Jeane?" Merrin asks, her voice a hushed whisper. "What's out there in the shadows?"

She knows that they've come this far for a reason, but even so, the thought of reaching out and touching that sword makes her stomach churn. There are some treasures, she thinks, that are better left alone.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step closer to the ancient gate, my eyes tracing the complex patterns of the runes carved into its surface. The air here is thick with an oppressive energy, a sense of wrongness that prickles along my skin like static electricity. As Merrin’s question hangs in the air, I squint, trying to pierce the shadows beyond the torchlight.
My arcane senses tingle, warning me of something unseen and malevolent lurking in the darkness. The vibrations from the Time-Splitting Sword on the pedestal behind us have taken on a frantic, almost desperate rhythm, as if the blade itself is screaming a silent warning.
"Merrin, there's... something here," I murmur, my voice so low it's almost lost beneath the sudden creaking of old stone. I point a trembling finger towards a specific patch of shadow near the base of the wall. A faint, pale glow seems to pulse within its depths, like the ghostly outline of an eye. "Can you see that? It feels... aware."
I take a half-step back, my heart hammering against my ribs. The magic in this place is wrong, ancient and twisted. It's nothing like the pure, radiant power I'm accustomed to studying. This is something else entirely—something hungry.
The thought of retrieving the cursed Time-Splitting Sword without being claimed by its dark enchantment seems even more daunting now. Yet, our quest is clear. We must proceed with extreme caution, for this tower may be far more than just a crumbling ruin.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I approach the pedestal carefully, my silver holy symbol clutched in one hand while I keep my torch raised with the other. The air around the sword feels wrong—crackling with an energy that makes the hairs on my arms stand up. "Wait," I say firmly. "Something's stirring here." I look at Varrika and Merrin, both positioned to charge ahead, and then at Seraphine, who's already spotted something amiss in the shadows. "Varrika, stop. Merrin, don't rush forward. Jeane, what do you sense?" I shift my weight, ready to move between them and whatever might emerge from those deepening shadows. "The magic here is ancient and hungry. We need a plan before we start messing with that sword." My voice carries both authority and genuine concern—the kind of tone that makes people pause when they'd normally charge into danger. I step closer to the pedestal, shielding my light source with one arm as if to contain the energy around it. "Seraphine's right—something's here. I can feel it too. Whatever animates this place, we don't want to anger it." My mind races through possible blessings or protections, but I hesitate. Using divine magic could disrupt whatever ward is keeping this thing contained. Or worse, provoke it. Instead, I focus on grounding the group. "Let's think this through. The sword clearly has wards—those runes aren't decorative. Breaking them without a plan could release something far worse than skeletons." I glance at Jeane, silently pleading for insight into what she sees in those shadows. My fingers tighten around my holy symbol, drawing comfort from its familiar weight even as unease settles in my chest. "We need to approach this carefully. Merrin, can you find a way around the wards without triggering them? Seraphine, any arcane insights on what those runes actually do?" I'm not asking permission—I'm leading because someone needs to keep us from rushing into a death trap. My expression is set, determined but cautious. "And Varrika," I add with a pointed look, "sometimes patience is more valuable than force."

This isn't about being the boss—it's about using my head and my faith to protect the group from our own impulsiveness. The sword might be our quest item, but right now it feels like bait in a very dangerous trap.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The air crackles with an ancient energy as we approach the pedestal. My dwarven instincts scream at me to be wary of this magic. I grip my mace tighter, ready to defend the party from whatever threats may lurk ahead. Halie's right - we need a plan before we start messing with that sword. "Merrin," I call out gruffly, "keep those rogue eyes peeled for traps. There's no telling what kind of tricks these dark sorcerers left behind."

I turn to Jeane, the sorceress. "And you - tell us about those runes. What's their purpose and how do we avoid setting them off?" My voice rumbles with a blend of concern and command. As I scan the shadows, unease prickles my skin like a thousand tiny spiders. There's something here, watching us. I can feel it. The tower feels alive, hungry, and I don't trust it for a second. "We're not out of danger yet," I growl, "so stay sharp. That sword may be our prize, but this tower isn't going to give it up easily."
