As Merrin's lockpicks dance across the ancient mechanism, the runes etched into the stone begin to glow with an otherworldly light. The air around the gate thickens, and the pulse of malevolent energy surges. Suddenly, the central rune darkens, its edges bleeding a faint, pulsing red. The gate's mechanisms shriek in protest as it unlocks with a grinding screech, revealing a dark tunnel beyond. The party hesitates, weighing the cost of proceeding against the risk of triggering unintended consequences. As they enter the tunnel, the darkness is broken by flickering torches set into the walls, casting eerie shadows on the stone. The air is heavy with the scent of decay and corruption. A low, mournful moan echoes through the tunnel, making the party's skin prickle with unease. The sound grows louder, and a chill wind stirs the dust, carrying an acrid tang that makes eyes water. The tunnel stretches out before them, vanishing into darkness. A faint symbol, like a twisted cross, adorns the stone floor, pulsing with a sickly green light. It seems to be the source of the moaning sound, and the symbol's power is growing stronger by the second.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The moment Merrin turns that final lockpick, I feel it—the ancient wards snapping, the barrier breaking. The air itself seems to exhale, dust and decay pouring from the newly opened gateway. I hold up my hand, arcane energy crackling across my fingertips as I prepare a ward against whatever might emerge from that black maw of a tunnel. 'Stop.' My voice cuts through the tension like a blade. 'Before we take one step inside, let's be clear on what we're walking into. That moan wasn't just echoes—something in there knows we're here now.'

I trace the air with my clawed finger, reading the lingering magic signatures left behind by whatever bound this place shut originally. The wards were layered, complex beyond anything I've encountered before. And that central rune... it pulsed with a wrongness even my demonic nature recoiled from. 'This tower wasn't just built to keep people out—it was constructed to contain something.' I fix each member of the party with my crimson gaze in turn. 'Something powerful enough to require magic beyond what should exist in this world.'

I draw my heavy mace, its iron head carved with symbols of binding and banishment I inscribed myself. The weapon feels solid, reassuring in my grip, but I know it's not truly meant for the horrors we might face here. 'We proceed together, stick close, watch each other's backs.' My wings unfurl slightly, a show of controlled power more than necessity. 'If anything moves that shouldn't, if you see runes lighting up or hear voices in your head—say something immediately. Because whatever's in there, it knows we're coming for its toy.'

I step forward, arcane energy trailing like ghostly fingers down my arms. The darkness beyond the gate seems to press inwards, alive with unseen movement and malevolent intent. 'Let's not make this a suicide run.' I mutter under my breath. 'Find that sword, touch it once, then get out. And pray to whatever gods might still be listening that we can resist its curse long enough to destroy the damn thing.'

I glance back at Merrin, who holds the now-open gate with evident unease. The rogue's skill got us this far, but breaking and entering is only half the battle when dealing with ancient evils. 'Halie,' I nod toward the cleric, 'keep that holy symbol ready—even if it does nothing against what's in there, the gesture might help maintain our sanity.' My wings twitch involuntarily; even my kind feels the wrongness of this place. 'And Varrika—if you do cast anything exploratory, make sure it has a failsafe incantation to recall or dispel it quickly.'

The air grows colder as I stand at the threshold, arcane energy ready to lash out at any threat that emerges from the shadows. 'Move out,' I command softly. 'And stay sharp—this is exactly the kind of place where legends go to die young and badly.'

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves as I step up to the gate's lock mechanism. The ancient runes etched into the stone seem to pulse with a malevolent energy, and I can feel the weight of everyone's eyes on me as I crouch down to examine the complex array of gears and levers. "Alright," I mutter under my breath, more to myself than to anyone else. "Let's see what we're dealing with here."

I select a lockpick with a deft hand, feeling for the right tension and torque as I begin to work the mechanism. The air around the gate thickens, and I can feel a faint tingling sensation in my fingertips as I manipulate the pick. Suddenly, there is a grinding screech as the lock disengages, and the gate swings open with a low groan. I jump back reflexively, half-expecting some sort of trap to spring to life. "Well, that was easier than I thought," I say, trying to keep my voice light despite the unease gnawing at my gut. "But something tells me we haven't seen the last of this gate's surprises."

I glance up at the others, noting the apprehension on their faces as they peer into the dark tunnel beyond. "Stick close," I warn, "and keep your eyes peeled for any sign of trouble. We don't want to be caught off guard in here."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I crouch down beside the gate, running my fingers over the ancient runes etched into the stone. The complexity of these wards is staggering. This isn't just about keeping intruders out; it's about containing something inside.
My eyes fixate on the central sigil, a swirling vortex of symbols that seems to draw me in. It feels different. More potent. "That central sigil," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else, my voice a low, intense murmur in the quiet space. "It feels... alive."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I move closer to Merrin, my crossbow ready but lowered. The grinding sound of the lock is somehow worse than silence—it's the sound of violation, of ancient seals being forced open against their purpose. I don't like this. The air tastes wrong already, thick and sweet like spoiled fruit. "Wait," I say softly, not stopping Merrin but standing close enough to be useful or shielded. "The runes—did you see them pulse? That wasn't natural." Varrika's right—the symbols are older than anything she's seen, and that means they could be tied to things we don't understand. I touch the gate stone carefully with my fingertips; it feels cold and wrong, like touching a dead thing that shouldn't be cold. "We should bind ourselves before going in," I suggest, reaching for my tinderbox and a torch. "A protection prayer over each person—just to be safe." Because if this place is as cursed as the legends say, we'll need every blessing we can get. And someone needs to keep a light ready; we're not doing this in total darkness. I look at Jeane's face, then Merrin's and Varrika's. "The stories about this place—they mentioned skeletons and worse things. If we see bones lying around, don't kick them or disturb them unless absolutely necessary." Because raising the dead is a fool's game, and I won't be responsible for summoning some ancient horror because someone got curious about a pile of dusty old bones. The central sigil does feel alive, in a way. Not living like us—dead but active, like a disease that never dies. And if Seraphine senses that too, then we're dealing with something truly foul here. I step back and begin the prayer for protection over myself, letting the light of my goddess flow through me. Because whatever's waiting in this tower, we need to be ready for it body and soul. I can feel my fatigue weighing on me already, but that's just physical weariness. The spiritual exhaustion will come later, if we encounter anything truly corrupt inside. "Stay together," I remind everyone once the prayer is done. "Stick close—whatever happens in there, we face it as a group." Because being alone in this place? That would be a death sentence. And yes, I know—we need to retrieve that sword. But at what cost? I'm not dying for some cursed artifact, and I won't let any of you die either if I can help it. So we'll go in, we'll find it, but we leave it exactly where we find it. No one touches that thing until the destruction ritual is ready. I light the torch with steady hands, the flame catching and growing strong despite the oppressive atmosphere. "Let's do this," I say, though apprehension coils tight in my gut.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The ancient gate creaks open, revealing a dark tunnel beyond. I grip my mace tightly, every instinct screaming at me to turn back. But we've come too far. The others look to me, waiting for my lead. I step forward, into the shadows of the tower. "Stay close," I grunt. "And keep your eyes open. If anything feels off, shout."
