The sun dipped below the treetops as twilight settled over the clearing before the tower gate. The ancient wards etched into the stone seemed to drink up what little light remained, leaving the air heavy and cold. Jeane stepped back from the barrier, her crimson eyes scanning the sinister symbols that pulsed with a dark energy she could feel in her teeth. "Those aren't just runes," she said quietly. "They're spells meant to keep something sealed away." Her fingers traced one particularly intricate design—a ward against undead—and felt an oily residue that made her skin crawl.

Halie moved closer, her silver cross held out as if for protection. She studied the symbols with a cleric's eye, face set in an expression of stern warning. "This magic is wrong—it clings to the stone like rot," she murmured. "We should not be here casually. Those wards weren't meant to keep out simple thieves." She turned to face her companions directly: "Merrin, whatever you find on that lock, expect traps."

Merrin crouched down to examine the gate's mechanism, her nimble fingers tracing the intricate runes etched into the weathered metal. The symbols were unlike anything she'd seen before—older than the common tongue, predating even the gods they worshipped now. "Careful, quick hands," she muttered under her breath as she worked to pick the lock. "No telling what kind of wards these sorcerers left behind." The air felt heavy with centuries of weight and danger.

Seraphine stood before the ancient gate, her sharp elven eyes tracing the intricate patterns etched into the stone. The air around them crackled with an energy she'd only read about in dusty tomes—a dark power that felt both ancient and alive. "These wards are no mere decoration," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. Her gaze flickered to the heavy mace at her hip, a reassuring weight against the unknown dangers they faced.

Varrika stepped forward to block the gate, her mace gripped tightly in one hand as she studied the ancient runes. The symbols were unlike anything she'd seen before, older even than the common tongue. A sense of foreboding washed over her as she took in the sheer weight of centuries pressing down from the stone. "Careful now," she warned the others, her gravelly voice cutting through the tension. "Those runes could be more than just decoration. The air itself feels thick with darkness." She turned to Jeane, who'd already begun examining the wards.

The sun disappeared completely, plunging the clearing into an unnatural twilight that seemed to leech color from everything it touched. The party stood before the sealed gate, each woman lost in her own thoughts as they contemplated what lay beyond—and what ancient evils might still guard the way inside.
