The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane traces the runes carefully with the tip of her dagger, her expression grim. Elric speaks in riddles and half-truths—this isn't knowledge we're buying, it's permission. She glances at Merrin, her crimson eyes narrowing. Stand down. Whatever lies beyond this gate, we face it together or not at all. Her wings shift restlessly as she concentrates on the pulsating black star symbol. This magic feels wrong—hungry. The stones themselves seem to watch us, waiting for a misstep. She traces another rune, her movements precise and deliberate.

Halie, prepare a blessing against corruption—I don't trust whatever darkness clings to these symbols. Seraphine, ready your dispel spells—they might be necessary the moment we breach the gate. Jeane's voice drops to a dangerous purr. As for you, Merrin—we've come too far and survived too much to throw it away on reckless bravery. Patience now serves us better than haste ever could.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step forward cautiously, eyeing the pulsing runes warily. Elric's warnings about a price for knowledge echo in my mind. The dark energy radiating from the gate feels hungry, eager to ensnare us in its web of ancient magic. "Alright, listen up," I say, turning to the group. "We've come this far, and we're not turning back now. But we can't just barge in there without knowing what we're up against."
I glance at Halie, hoping her divine insight might offer some clarity. "Halie, any ideas on how to read these runes? They're giving me a serious case of the heebie-jeebies."
My gaze darts to Jeane, curious about her take on the situation. "Jeane, care to share your thoughts on this eldritch door? Any spells that might help us get a better handle on what's behind it?"
As I speak, my hands absently trace the outline of my lockpicks, a habit born from years of facing locked doors and secrets. The weight of our mission presses down on me like a physical burden. We've made it this far, but the true test lies ahead. "Varrika," I continue, "keep your mace at the ready. We might need to move fast if things go sideways." I offer a wry smile, trying to lighten the mood. "And Seraphine, if you could work your arcane magic and give us a heads-up on any nasty surprises, that'd be great."
Taking a deep breath, I turn back to the gate, my heart pounding in my chest. The runes pulse faster, responding to our proximity and touch. It's now or never. "Alright, everyone," I say, steeling myself for what's to come. "Let's see what lies behind door number one. But remember, we stick together no matter what. We've got this."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I take a step back from the pulsating gate, my eyes narrowing as I study the intricate runes etched into its surface. The magic radiating from them is unlike anything I've encountered before—it feels old, ancient, and deeply unsettling. It's a hunger, a dark presence that seems to watch our every move.
"The hermit's words echo in my mind,"
I mutter, more to myself than anyone else. "A price for knowledge."
My gaze darts between the glowing black star symbol at the center of the gate and Merrin, who stands poised at the edge of our makeshift camp, her posture tense with barely contained energy.
I know what that look means. She's about to do something reckless.
"I must stop this before it begins,"
I think, my mind racing through potential spells, counterspells, and warnings.
But as I open my mouth to speak, a sudden surge of power from the runes makes the hair on my arms stand on end. The air crackles with an otherworldly energy, and for a moment, the world seems to tilt on its axis.
The reality around us shifts, blurring at the edges like a poorly drawn map. Shadows deepen into inky pools, and the sounds of the forest are swallowed by a heavy silence.
I feel a chill trace down my spine as I realize what's happening: the runes aren't just pulsating; they're reacting to our presence, to Merrin's intent.
"Everyone, stand back!"
I call out, my voice sharp with urgency. The spell I was about to cast vanishes from my thoughts as I frantically try to assess the new threat.
My hands move instinctively, tracing a complex pattern in the air. I am trying to read the runes, to understand their language before they can manifest something worse than what we already face.*

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I understand the hesitation, Halie. But we can't just stand here forever staring at the damn thing. Someone's gotta do something— [END_DIALOGUE]

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The runes' pulsing intensifies as I approach. My hand hovers over their surface, feeling the hungry magic thrum beneath my skin. I can practically hear them whispering, begging to be activated. But there's no way in the nine hells I'm going to be the fool who touches these traps. I look to Halie, hoping her arcane knowledge can shed some light on this dark mystery. "Halie, love, any ideas on how to read these runes without waking the wrong thing up?"

My mace feels good and heavy in my grip as I scan the area for threats. The skeletons seem agitated, their bones rattling like dice in a drunkard's cup. I keep a wary eye on them while waiting for Halie's response. This tower is bad news, and I've got a feeling we're only just scratching the surface of its secrets. But there's no turning back now. We came for the sword, and by the gods, we'll find it—even if we have to claw our way through a maze of hungry magic and undead horrors. But first, we need to figure out how to open this damn gate without getting ourselves cursed in the process.
