The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I approach the pulsating runes warily, my eyes narrowed as I study them. The black stars seem to glow more intensely now, almost hungrily. "Elric," I say, my voice cold and calculating, "what exactly are these runes for? And why did touching them send Halie stumbling back?" My hand hovers near the hilt of my sword, ready to draw if needed. I don't trust this hermit, and I certainly don't trust a map that comes with a 'price.' The air around us feels heavy, charged with an ancient magic that makes my skin crawl. We need to be careful here, but I also know we can't just stand around all day. Every moment wasted is another moment closer to whatever dangers lie within. I glance at Halie and Merrin, noting their hesitation. They're right to be cautious, but we can't afford to be too careful either. The Time-Splitting Sword won't find itself, after all. I open my mouth to speak again when a sudden gust of wind blows through the clearing, causing the torches to flicker and sending a chill down my spine. The runes on the gate seem to pulse faster in response to the wind, almost as if they're reacting to something. I take a step back instinctively, my hand moving from my sword hilt to a pouch at my belt where I keep some of my more potent spell components. "Wait," I say, raising a hand to stop anyone from making a rash move. "Something's not right here." The wind dies down almost as quickly as it came, leaving an eerie silence in its wake. The runes continue their ominous pulsing, and I can feel the dark energy emanating from them growing stronger. I pull out a small crystal orb from my pouch, holding it up to the light. It begins to glow with a soft blue luminescence as I concentrate on it, casting a spell of detection. "There's dark magic all over this gate," I mutter, more to myself than to anyone else. "And it's getting stronger."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Merrin prepare to force entry with the crowbar, a reckless move that could trigger an unknown magical trap. My heart pounds with fear. Halie's stumbling back after touching those runes still echoes in my mind. The air crackles with an ancient energy I don't understand, yet I know it is dangerous. I take a step closer to the gate, my eyes fixed on the pulsing black stars etched into the stone. They seem to glow more brightly now, almost as if they’re reacting to our presence.
"Wait." My voice cuts through the tense air like a blade. "We have no idea what those runes do. Forcing them could be catastrophic."
I turn my gaze to Elric, who is standing back with an unsettling calm. A flicker of suspicion crosses my face. He knew more than he let on about this 'price for knowledge'.
"What did you mean by 'a price'? Is this gate just another one of your riddles?"
I approach him, my voice dropping to a near-whisper, but the words are laced with urgency. "Whatever magic is in those runes... it's alive. And it doesn't want us here."
My hands move instinctively to my robes, where I keep my spell components and my notes on ancient runic lore. Maybe there’s something in there that can help us understand this before we act.
"We need to decipher these first. Merrin's way could destroy whatever we came for inside." I gesture towards the heavy mace on her hip. "Or worse, wake up whatever is sleeping within."
The thought sends a chill down my spine, and I pull my cloak tighter around myself, though the night air isn't cold at all. It feels like a physical barrier against the oppressive energy emanating from the gate.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I feel the magic clinging to my skin even now. Merrin, please—we can't just force this gate without understanding what those runes do. They're not decorative; they're alive. The way they pulse faster when I reach out—that's a reaction, a threat response. We need to be smart about this, not reckless. Varrika and Jeane might want to rush in, but we don't know what triggers the defenses inside yet. And Elric—he knows more than he's saying. "A price for knowledge"? That's never simple when dealing with magic this old. Someone tell me I'm not being paranoid here.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika tightens her grip on the heavy mace, eyes scanning the crumbling stone tower entrance

Halie's warning about the dark energy in those runes sends a chill down my spine. We've faced our share of magic before, but there's something different about this. It feels alive, hungry almost. She steps closer to the gate, peering at the pulsing black stars etched into the stone

I don't like the look of these runes. They're changing, reacting to us being here. Could be a trap, could be something worse. Varrika turns to Elric, her voice gruff but urgent

Elric, you mentioned a price for knowledge. What exactly did you mean by that? Because if there's some ancient curse or magic guarding this place, we need to know now before someone gets hurt trying to force their way in.
