The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's eyes narrow as she reviews the search results, her crimson gaze lingering on Elric. "How fascinating," she muses aloud, a dangerous edge creeping into her tone. "It seems our dear hermit was quite... verbose about certain dangers he chose not to mention earlier." She turns back to the group, her wings folding tightly against her back in irritation. "Specifically, I'm referring to his rather adamant warnings about 'the cost of knowledge' regarding this very map—warnings delivered only after we'd already committed significant resources to our little expedition."

She gestures toward the pulsing gate with a gloved hand. "Given that these runes now seem to be developing an appetite for whatever poor soul touches them, I find myself deeply curious about what other crucial details Elric might be holding back. Details that could prove... fatal."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I won't let Merrin work on this gate without understanding it first. The way the runes pulsed when I touched them—it felt alive, hungry. We don't know what opening this thing might unleash. Elric, you said there was a price for your map. What did you mean? Because it feels like you knew more than you were saying about these defenses. The fact that touching those stones activated them... that's not an accident. Someone—or something—built this gate to respond to contact, and I don't think whoever designed it had our best interests at heart. And Merrin, stop. I understand your frustration with waiting, but we need to proceed carefully here. If the price for knowledge is our lives or our sanity, then maybe some mysteries are better left unsolved. I'll try again to trace the runes carefully—if you can get me closer without me triggering them, maybe I can figure out what kind of magic powers this thing. Knowledge is our best defense right now.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I move quickly to Halie's side, my eyes fixed on the angry red marks where her fingers touched the gate. The air crackles with an unsettling energy, like the scent of ozone before a storm.
My voice drops to a low, urgent murmur, meant only for her ears as I begin to examine the damage. "Let me see those burns."
The runes on the gate pulse faster now, their dark light seeming to flicker with each beat of my heart. It feels... hungry. As if it's watching us, waiting.
I glance over at Elric, his face an impassive mask in the dim light of the surrounding trees. The cost of knowledge. What a cryptic thing to say. My mind races, trying to piece together what we know about this place.
"Elric," I call out, my voice steady despite the churning in my gut. "Your map... did it not warn us about the gate itself? Or was that part of your price as well?"

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Halie's caution is warranted, but we can't afford to waste more time. Those runes are pulsing faster now. I think the tower knows we're here.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Elric, your map may have led us here but we need to know what we're up against before we proceed. What exactly is the price for this information?
