Elric, The Hermit, steps out from behind a nearby tree, his eyes fixed on the ancient rune-covered gate. He approaches the party, his staff at the ready. "Mortal seekers of the Time-Splitting Sword," Elric says in a low, raspy voice. "I sense your determination to breach this gate, but beware: the dark magic within will not be easily swayed."

Elric pauses, surveying the party before continuing. "The stones on either side of the gate are uneven, suggesting the ground itself may be unstable here. I can offer you a map of the tower's inner workings, but it comes at a price."

A faint glow emanates from Elric's staff as he holds out a yellowed parchment. The map appears to be incomplete, with several sections torn or obscured. "Will you pay the price for my knowledge, or will you force your way in?"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step forward, my dark wings rustling as I survey the ominous gate before us. The violet glow of those runes sends a shiver down my spine—not fear, mind you, but the primal recognition of something ancient and malevolent lurking within this stone tomb. 'The hermit's map may be incomplete,' I muse aloud, 'but it serves as a starting point.' I draw upon my sorcerous training and begin tracing the patterns with my fingers—careful not to trigger any defensive traps. The symbols here are older than anything I've encountered before; they seem to pulse with dark energy. 'Merrin,' I call over my shoulder, 'if you find a mechanical weakness, let me know. I'll try to match it with an incantation that won't summon every skeleton in the region.' My fingers dance across the stone as I weave a subtle spell of detection—seeking hidden triggers or pressure points. The magic responds with a low hum, revealing faint energy signatures beneath our feet. 'There's something wrong with the ground here,' I warn everyone, stepping back carefully. 'The stones aren't just uneven—they're actively unstable.' I glance at Seraphine, who seems equally apprehensive about this situation. 'If we must force entry, let us be swift and precise. Dark magic like this doesn't appreciate clumsy intruders.' My hand drifts to the hilt of my sword—I prefer finesse over brute force when dealing with arcane defenses, but sometimes steel is necessary. I turn to Halie, noting her grip on that holy symbol. 'Keep that close,' I advise. 'Dark entities often target those they perceive as threats to their power.' My wings unfurl slightly—a defensive posture more than a threatening one—as I prepare for whatever horrors might await us beyond this gate.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step forward, my silver cross necklace catching a sliver of moonlight through the canopy above. The violet light from the runes makes my skin prickle with ancient wrongness. "Wait." I lay a hand on Merrin's shoulder before she digs deeper into whatever traps might lie dormant here. "Let's pause and consider our approach. Elric's map may have gaps, but it's better than rushing blindly into a tomb that's clearly still guarded by dark magic."

I turn to face the others, my voice measured and even: "We need a proper strategy before we attempt entry. Merrin, your skills with locks are unmatched, but even you can't disarm magic without preparation." I glance at Seraphine and Varrika standing ready nearby. "And the two of you—we'll need that muscle and steel if things go awry."

I pull out my own map from Elric's bundle and spread it on a nearby stone block, careful to keep it away from the gate itself. The parchment feels cool and brittle under my fingers, its edges yellowed with age. "First, let's go over what we know." I trace the main corridor with my finger. "According to Elric, this leads directly to the central chamber where the sword is housed. But he also mentioned these... 'shadow demons' bound within the walls?" My eyes flick between Merrin and Jeane. "What do you make of those?"

I step closer to the gate itself, hand hovering near my mace but not yet gripping it. The runes pulse with a malevolent energy that feels like cold fingers brushing against my mind. I resist the urge to recoil physically, standing firm despite the chill that settles into my bones. "And more importantly—what do you think we should pay special attention to as we proceed?"

I look at each companion in turn, waiting for their input. My hand closes around the hilt of my mace, not in threat but as a grounding gesture, a physical connection to the divine protection I've been blessed with. The silver cross on my necklace feels heavy against my chest, a reminder of why we're here—more than just greed or curiosity about some magical artifact. "We don't have to like this place," I say quietly, "but we do have to respect it. This tower has survived for centuries because something within protects it fiercely. Let's make sure we're not the ones to awaken whatever sleeps beyond this gate."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I circle the crumbling gate, my nimble fingers tracing the intricate runes etched into the ancient stone. The air is thick with the weight of dark magic, and I can't shake the feeling that we're being watched from within the shadows of this accursed tower. As I probe for hidden mechanisms or weak points, my mind races through the possibilities. Those uneven stones on either side of the gate - they could be a trap just waiting to spring, or a clue to some deeper mystery. And what about those shadow demons Elric was rambling on about? Best not to dwell on that now. I pause, considering our options. We could try to force the gate open, but that would likely summon every skeletal guard in the place. Or we could search for a more subtle way in, but that could take time we don't have. I glance back at the others, my eyes meeting Halie's steady gaze. "Looks like we're going to need that map after all," I call out, only half-joking. "But first, let's see if we can't find a way in without alerting the whole undead army to our presence."

With that, I turn back to the gate, my hands already reaching for my lockpicks. It's time to put my skills to the test and hope that luck is on our side. Because one thing's for certain - we're not leaving this tower empty-handed, no matter what horrors it might hold.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand before the ancient stone gate, its surface covered in swirling runes that pulse with an unsettling violet light. The air around it feels thick, charged with an energy that raises the fine hairs on my arms. My eyes trace the complex patterns, searching for any sign of weakness or hidden mechanism. The uneven stones on either side of the gate suggest a deeper instability within the very structure of this place.
My mind races, considering the stories we've heard - tales of undead guardians and shadow demons bound within the walls. I feel a chill trace its way down my spine as I imagine what horrors might be lurking just beyond this barrier. We must proceed with caution, for the price of knowledge here could be far greater than mere gold.
I turn to face the rest of the party, my expression grave. "These runes are unlike anything I've ever seen," I say, my voice a low murmur, meant only for our group. "They seem to be warding off more than just physical entry."
My gaze falls on Merrin, her fingers already probing at the ancient locks. "Merrin, your skills with locks are unmatched, but even you can't disarm magic without preparation. We need to find a way to bypass this gate without triggering whatever alarms these runes contain."
The thought of what lies beyond this door fills me with a mixture of dread and anticipation. The Time-Splitting Sword is said to be here, an artifact of immense power that could reshape the very fabric of reality itself. But such power always comes at a cost, and I fear we may be walking blindly into a trap set by forces far more ancient and dangerous than we can comprehend.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The dwarf warrior eyes the tower entrance warily, her hand resting on the haft of her mace. She exchanges a glance with Halie, nodding in agreement at the cleric's suggestion to strategize before entering. Varrika's keen eyes scan the ancient stonework, searching for any sign of traps or weaknesses. "I'll keep watch," she grunts, "Make sure nothing sneaks up on us while you lot figure out a plan." Her voice rumbles deep in her chest, rough as gravel. "And if those shadow demons are real, we'll need more than steel to face them."

Varrika's gaze drifts back to the gate, pulse of violet light catching in her eyes. She shakes her head, thick braid swaying against her back. "I've seen dark magics like this before," she mutters. "Never ends well."
