Round 1 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1
The flickering candles cast eerie shadows across the walls of the ruined border chapel, illuminating the worn faces of the party members seated around the heavy wooden table. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and old wood, and the distant rumble of thunder echoes through the cracked stone walls. Beyond the narrow windows, the Whispering Woods stretch into the darkness, their twisted branches like skeletal fingers reaching towards the sky.
At the head of the table, a lone candle burns brightly, casting a warm glow over the faces of the party. The Narrator, seated at the far end of the table, addresses the gathering.
"Friends and companions, we've all made it here for one reason: the whispered promise of the Time-Splitting Sword. But let's not forget why we're here in the first place. We've been hired to retrieve that sword, said to be hidden within the accursed tower deep within the Whispering Woods. The stories are dire – undead guardians, dark sorcerers, and those who return... changed."
The Narrator pauses, surveying the room with a serious gaze.
"We've come this far, though. We're all here now, and we know what's at stake. But I must remind you that success or failure will not be measured solely by our ability to navigate the tower's treacherous halls. We must also consider the consequences of our actions. Will we be able to retrieve the sword without unleashing its power into the world, or will we succumb to its allure and risk everything?"
The Narrator leans forward, her eyes locked on each member of the party.
"Elric, the Hermit, has offered us his knowledge of the tower's history. He believes the key to unlocking the secrets of the Time-Splitting Sword lies within the ancient runes etched into the gate before us. But we must be cautious – the dark sorcerers who dwell within the tower are known to be ruthless and cunning."
The room falls silent, the only sound the soft creaking of the old wooden table beneath the weight of the party's collective gaze. The Narrator's eyes scan the room, waiting for a response from the party.
The gate before them stands as a massive, ancient stone monolith, its surface etched with strange symbols that seem to writhe and twist in the flickering candlelight. The air emanating from it is heavy with an otherworldly energy, and the cold violet light seeps into the room like a malevolent presence.
What would you like to do?
Jeane Cromwell leans back in her chair, her posture radiating an aristocratic nonchalance that seems out of place in this damp, gloomy chamber. The Time-Splitting Sword, hmmm? She traces the rim of her goblet with a sharp nail, the sound barely audible over the distant thunder. A relic of such power should indeed be handled with... utmost care. And by whom do you propose we 'handle' it?
I lean forward, my expression serious and intent. We were not hired to 'handle' the sword, Mr. Narrator. We were hired to retrieve it. The consequences of its power are precisely why we must ensure it falls into the right hands – ours, not those of the dark sorcerers who would use it for their own ends.
I shift uncomfortably in my seat, my fingers drumming a nervous rhythm on the tabletop. Look, I'm not going to lie, this whole thing gives me the creeps. A tower full of undead and demons? Sign me up for a nice, quiet heist where the worst thing waiting for me is a locked door.
I push my spectacles up the bridge of my nose, my eyes narrowing as I consider the Narrator's words carefully. The thought of the Time-Splitting Sword sends a thrill through me, but I know better than to let that excitement cloud my judgment.
The key to unlocking its secrets lies within the ancient runes? I repeat, my voice holding a note of clinical interest. That’s an intriguing lead. But we must be cautious not to become entangled in the very history we seek to unravel. What exactly did this Elric say about these runes and their connection to the tower's guardians?
My gaze drifts toward the massive gate, where the cold violet light seems to pulse with a malevolent heartbeat. I feel a shiver trace its way down my spine, a mixture of fear and anticipation.
I shift in my seat, the weight of my armor creaking as I lean forward to rest my elbows on the table. The flickering candlelight casts deep shadows across my scarred face, emphasizing the hard lines of my features. Aye, let's not forget what we're dealing with here. Those runes on that gate? I jerk my chin toward the massive stone monolith. They're not just for decoration. There's power there, ancient and nasty. And those who wield it? My voice drops to a low growl. They've had centuries to perfect their craft.
