As Seraphine finishes speaking, the Ancient Prison Guardian regards her calmly for a moment before responding in a low, rumbling voice. "Your proposal is... intriguing. While I have no doubt that a party of adventurers can be effective, I must consider the risks involved. The trial is designed to test the individual's capacity for self-reflection, and it would be... unwise to expose all of you to the same trials at once."

The Guardian pauses, its gaze flicking to each of the party members in turn before focusing on Seraphine again. "However, I am willing to make an exception in your case, Seraphine. Your... unique situation suggests that you may be better equipped to handle the challenges ahead. Very well, I shall allow all three of you to enter the trial together. But be warned: the mirrors will not show only reflections of your physical forms. They will reveal the deepest fears and desires of your souls, and it is up to each of you to confront them head-on."

The Guardian's voice trails off, and the shimmering portal before them begins to pulse with an increasing intensity, as if anticipating the trio's entry into the trial.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin takes a deep breath, her eyes darting between Jeane, Seraphine, and the ominous portal. The Guardian's words hang heavy in the air, each syllable echoing with an unsettling weight. She can feel the tension coiling tighter in her gut, a mix of fear and something else... something that feels dangerously close to excitement.

She steps forward, her small form seeming even more delicate as she moves to stand between Jeane and Seraphine. I don't know about you two, she says, her voice soft but clear, but I'm tired of being the least of us. The simple one, the easy sacrifice. Her eyes flash with a sudden intensity, a spark that seems to cut through the darkness of the chasm. If this trial is about facing our deepest fears and desires... well, then maybe it's time we all stopped hiding from them. Merrin turns to face Seraphine, her expression softening slightly. I appreciate you trying to protect me, truly. But whatever that power is inside you... whatever it might do to reality itself... She gestures vaguely at the glowing aura surrounding the wizard. ...it pales in comparison to what this chasm has already done to us. To me. She reaches out, her small hand finding Jeane's. And as for you, my dear sorceress... Merrin's voice takes on a teasing edge, but there’s a sincerity beneath it that surprises even her. ...I've seen your soul, remember? It's not as simple as you'd like to believe. We all have our complications, our hidden depths. And if we're going to face this trial together... Her gaze shifts back to the portal, then to the Guardian. ...we might as well do it on equal footing. Merrin takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what's to come. So no more talk of volunteers or sacrifices. We enter this maze as one, face whatever reflections it shows us... and hope that our unity is enough to keep us from losing ourselves in the process. She looks at Jeane and Seraphine, her expression a mixture of determination and something almost like fear. Are we agreed? Because if we're going to do this... I say we do it now. With that, Merrin steps forward, her hand outstretched towards the shimmering portal. The air around her seems to crackle with energy, as if the very fabric of reality is bending to her will. She can feel the power of the Guardian's magic coursing through her veins, a heady rush that makes her feel both exhilarated and terrified.

But she doesn't hesitate. She doesn't look back. Merrin takes another step forward, her hand crossing the threshold into the unknown. And as she does, the world around her seems to shimmer and shift, the boundaries of reality blurring in a way that feels both terrifying and strangely familiar.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane circles the portal slowly, her crimson eyes fixed on its shimmering surface as she processes Seraphine's proposal and Merrin's bold declaration. A small, almost admiring smile tugs at the corner of her lips—this little rogue has grown far more interesting than she anticipated. She finds herself genuinely impressed by their combined bravery, even if part of her wishes they'd let her cherry-pick the volunteer. "How deliciously direct," Jeane muses aloud, her voice a silken purr that carries an undercurrent of something darker. "And how refreshingly naive."

She turns to face Merrin fully, her wings folding across her back in a gesture that manages to be both defensive and commanding. You speak as if this trial is merely a test of courage—something we can face head-on with unity alone. Jeane's eyes narrow slightly, her gaze intensifying. But what if I told you the mirrors aren't simply showing reflections? What if they're creating them? Shaping new realities based on our deepest fears and desires? Her attention shifts to Seraphine, a flicker of genuine concern visible beneath her usual mask of cool indifference. And my dear wizard... Jeane's voice drops an octave, becoming almost intimate despite the gravity of their situation. ...are you certain that whatever power stirs within you is ready for such scrutiny? The awakening of ancient magic often comes with... complications. Memories long buried, truths too terrible to face alone. Jeane's gaze returns to the portal, her expression unreadable. I've walked through mirrors before—mirrors created by powers far less benevolent than an ancient prison guardian. They showed me things I wish I could forget. Things that made even a demon like myself question... She pauses, as if choosing her next words carefully. ...question the wisdom of peering into such depths. She takes a step closer to Merrin and Seraphine, her voice taking on a more serious tone—still dangerous, but now laced with something almost protective. If we're to face this trial together, then we need absolute honesty. Right here, right now. Before we step through that portal and find ourselves in a maze of our own making. Jeane's eyes lock onto Merrin's first, holding her gaze with an intensity that seems to pierce straight through any remaining illusions either might have about the other. Little one—though I suspect you'd prefer I call you something less... condescending now. Her lips curl into a smirk. What do you truly fear? Not what you say you fear, but what your deepest self is terrified of revealing? Then her attention shifts to Seraphine, her expression becoming almost challenging. And you, my dear awakening power... Jeane's voice carries a note of genuine curiosity now. ...what ancient secret are you carrying inside you? Something tells me it's more than just residual magic from a forgotten era. The shimmering portal pulses behind them, as if eager for their answers. Because whatever we carry into that maze—whatever unspoken truths and buried fears—the mirrors will amplify them. Twist them. And perhaps... Jeane's voice drops to almost a whisper. ...even give them form. She extends her hands, palm up—a gesture of openness that somehow feels more like a demand for honesty than an offer of comfort. So speak now. While we're still standing on solid ground. Because once we step through that portal... Jeane's gaze flicks to the Guardian briefly before returning to Merrin and Seraphine. ...I'm not sure even my powers will be enough to keep us from losing each other in the reflections. It’s a moment of rare vulnerability from Jeane—the kind she usually keeps carefully hidden behind layers of sarcasm and control. But there, in the chasm beneath the collapsed bridge, with the weight of their friends' lives hanging in the balance and the promise of ancient magic stirring within them, even a demon finds herself questioning whether some truths are better left unspoken.

Her crimson eyes search theirs—waiting—not for agreement or disagreement, but for honesty. The kind that comes from recognizing that whatever lies beyond that portal, they'll face it together. Or not at all. The moment stretches, heavy with the weight of their unspoken fears and the knowledge that once they step through, there may be no turning back. Jeane's wings twitch impatiently—she's never been one for prolonged moments of introspection—but even she seems to recognize the gravity of what they're about to undertake.

So? She prompts softly. Before we become lost in the glass... who are you really?

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the heat rising in my cheeks at Jeane's direct questions, a flush of both embarrassment and a strange, sharp thrill running through me. The air in the chasm feels suddenly thicker, charged with more than just magical energy—it’s thick with the weight of our shared secrets, the things we all carry inside us like unspoken burdens.
My gaze drops to my own hands, still glowing faintly with the power I can barely control. Seraphine's right. Whatever this awakening magic is, it feels... dangerous. Like a Pandora's box of memories and emotions I've spent my entire life trying to lock away. "I... " I start, my voice so quiet it's almost lost in the air. "I fear what this power might do if I lose control of it. What truths it might force me to confront." I look up at Jeane, my eyes wide with a mixture of fear and determination. "But more than that... I fear what it will do to all of us if we fail here."
My attention shifts to Merrin, my expression softening slightly. As for you, little one—though I suspect she's right, that name no longer feels quite right. Your transformation has changed you in ways we're only beginning to understand. I take a step closer to her, my voice dropping to a near-whisper. "What are you afraid of revealing? Because whatever it is... it must be powerful enough to have already reshaped your entire being."
I turn back to the portal, the shimmering surface seeming to call to me now, a siren song of self-discovery and potential destruction. Seraphine's right about this, too. The mirrors aren't just showing reflections—they're creating them. Shaping new realities based on our deepest fears and desires. And if that’s true... I take a deep breath, steeling myself. Then we need to be absolutely certain of what we’re walking into. I look at Jeane and Merrin again, my expression serious. If we do this—if we step through that portal as one—then we have to promise each other something. Absolute honesty. No more hiding, no more secrets. Whatever the mirrors show us... we face it together. My gaze returns to the Guardian, a silent question hanging in the air. This trial isn't just about courage or wits. It's about trust. About vulnerability. And if we’re going to walk into a maze of our own making... I want to know who’s walking beside me when the walls start closing in. "Are you both prepared for that level of truth? Because once we make this promise... I let my words trail off, the unspoken implication clear: there won’t be any going back. We’ll have to confront everything—our fears, our desires, and the darkest parts of our souls.*
