The Ancient Prison Guardian's gaze lingers on Seraphine, its eyes seeming to bore into her very soul. "I sense a power within you, one that could potentially aid your quest," it says, its voice dripping with an air of calculated curiosity. "This power is ancient, tied to the very fabric of the binding that holds your companions prisoner."

The Guardian pauses, its gaze shifting to Jeane and Merrin. "But there is a catch. This power can only be unlocked if you prove yourself worthy. I will present you with a trial. If you succeed, the binding will be broken, and your friends will be freed. But if you fail, the consequences will be dire."

The Guardian raises its hand, and the cavern begins to shake. The ground trembles beneath their feet, and the sound of rushing water grows louder. "The trial is simple," the Guardian continues. "You must navigate the Chasm of Reflections, a maze of mirrors that will test your courage, wits, and resolve."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I hover above the chasm edge, my wings beating slowly to keep me steady as I process the implications of what this creature is saying—the 'ancient binding', the 'power' it claims Seraphine possesses. My eyes narrow as they fall on Merrin, seeing the faint glow beneath her skin. What in the Abyss is happening? This isn't some simple magical mishap—this feels like deliberate containment. The trial of mirrors? I say, my voice dripping with barely contained impatience and wariness. Of course it's not simple—as if any threat in this accursed tower would be. A maze of mirrors that tests 'courage, wits, and resolve'? That sounds less like a challenge and more like a death sentence disguised as an opportunity. I descend slowly, hovering near eye-level with the gaunt figure. My gaze is hard as I meet its burning stare. You claim our friends are bound by ancient magic, yet you offer us a trial to free them—a trial that could just as easily be a means of their destruction. What guarantee do we have that this isn't merely another layer of your containment? That completing this 'trial' won't simply lead us into deeper peril? My hand tightens on my mace reflexively, though I don't raise it. And what exactly does this power you claim to sense in Seraphine entail? Because from where I'm hovering, it looks an awful lot like she's being used as a pawn in whatever twisted game you're playing here. I glance at the others—Merrin still looks confused and frightened, Seraphine pale with concentration—and feel a surge of something almost like... protectiveness. No. Not that. Frustration, certainly, but also an appreciation for their tenacity despite obvious danger. They don't deserve to be sacrificed on some ancient guardian's whim. Fine, I mutter after a moment, my voice tight. We'll take your trial. But know this—I won't let any harm come to my companions, not by your hand or anyone else's. If this is a trick, I'll ensure it's the last one you ever play.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the full weight of the Guardian’s words sink in, each one a hammer blow against my already fragile composure. An ancient power within me? A trial to free our friends? It’s all happening so fast, yet everything about this creature and its pronouncements feels heavy with an unmistakable truth.
I look down at my hands, the faint glow still pulsing beneath my skin like a second heartbeat. Merrin is staring at her own hands too, her eyes wide with confusion and a touch of fear that mirrors my own heart. I can feel the others watching us—Jeane's protective stance, her mace gripped tight—but all I can focus on is this strange new sensation coursing through me.
My mind races, trying to make sense of it all. A maze of mirrors? A test of courage and resolve? It sounds like a nightmare, but if it means freeing Halie, Varrika, and Merrin from whatever binds them... I have no choice. "I don't understand this power you speak of," I say, my voice so low it's almost inaudible, "but if it can help us save our friends, then I am willing to do whatever is necessary."
I take a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic fluttering in my chest. The air around us feels charged, thick with unspoken threats and ancient magics. Every instinct screams at me to run, to hide away in some remote corner of the world where such powers can’t find me. But that path leads only to more death, more failure. No. We have to see this through.
My gaze meets Jeane’s, a silent understanding passing between us. She looks ready to fight, but I know her too well. Beneath that hard exterior, she’s feeling the same fear we all are. I give her a small nod—a gesture of solidarity, of shared purpose—and turn back to the Guardian.
The creature's eyes bore into mine, and for a moment, I feel utterly exposed, as if it can see not just my surface thoughts but the very depths of my soul. "Tell us what we must do," I say, my voice stronger now, though my insides feel like jelly. This is it. The moment of truth. "We will take this trial. For our friends."
