Jeane descended the chasm with practiced control, her wings beating steadily to maintain altitude over the yawning abyss below. The air grew heavy with ancient magic that made her skin prickle uncomfortably, thick with the scent of decay and something else—something almost organic and alive. She spotted the bridge at last, narrow and precarious-looking, its stone surface covered in strange symbols that pulsed faintly with trapped energy.

"Seraphine? Merrin?" she called out, her voice barely carrying over the distant chanting that seemed to echo from everywhere and nowhere at once. The structure groaned ominously as she hovered closer, the wind whipping her long white hair across her face. She could feel it now—a malevolent presence, ancient and powerful, watching them with hunger.

This place is wrong, she thought grimly. We're trespassing where we shouldn't be. The stones shifted beneath her feet, and she steadied herself in midair, one hand hovering near the hilt of her heavy mace. Something down there was not happy they'd come.

Merrin stood frozen on the crumbling ledge, her heart pounding in her chest as the stones shifted ominously beneath her feet. The groaning intensified, a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through her very bones. She could hear Jeane's voice echoing from above, laced with concern and urgency.

"Merrin! Seraphine! Are you down there?" The halfling woman swallowed hard, her quick hands clenching into fists at her sides. This was it—the moment they'd all feared since setting foot in this cursed tower. She glanced at Seraphine, who looked equally terrified, and then back down at the swirling darkness below.

"Jeane! We're here!" she called back, her voice barely steady. "The ledge is... unstable. We need to—"

Her words were cut off as the stone beneath them gave way with a sickening crack. Merrin lunged forward instinctively, grabbing Seraphine's arm and yanking her close as they both stumbled onto firmer ground just as the ledge collapsed into the chasm with an earsplitting roar.

They tumbled to the floor of what appeared to be some kind of ancient chamber, panting and disoriented. Merrin scrambled to her feet first, drawing her dagger and scanning their surroundings with wide, alert eyes.

"What in all the hells was that?" Seraphine gasped, clutching at Merrin's arm for support as she stood shakily.

Merrin shook her head, her gaze fixed on the darkness beyond. "I don't know," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the echo of distant chanting that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "But I have a feeling we're not alone down here."
