The air grew thick with ancient magic as they descended deeper into the chasm. Jeane hovered at the edge, her crimson eyes scanning the sheer walls below. "I see a bridge," she called back, her voice tense. "It's narrow and looks ready to collapse, but it might be our only way down." Seraphine gripped the metal bar tighter as she watched Jeane descend slowly, her powerful wings beating steadily.
The distant chanting or whispering intensified, sending shivers down their spines. They moved forward cautiously, pressing themselves against the cold stone walls. The passage ahead seemed to pulse with trapped energy, the air growing heavier still. Seraphine signaled for a halt when she sensed something ahead—another magical signature, different from the entity they'd passed.
Jeane hovered lower, trying to get a better view around the next bend. "I sense... something," she whispered, her eyes narrowing in concentration. "Magic, but contained—different from the entity." Seraphine moved up beside her, peering around the corner with bated breath.
At first, all she could see was darkness and the faint glow of magical energy. But then—a huddled shape against the wall, barely visible. Merrin spoke up, her voice a mix of hope and apprehension. Jeane nodded grimly. "It looks like it," she replied, her wings beating faster as she prepared to investigate.
As Jeane approached, the figure stirred, letting out a low moan that echoed through the passage. Seraphine felt a chill run down her spine—they were dealing with something ancient and powerful, likely very angry at their intrusion. The figure revealed itself—a withered humanoid covered in pulsing symbols, its mouth moving silently.
"By the goddess," Seraphine breathed, her knuckles turning white on the bar. "What is that thing?" Jeane's voice came back strained but controlled. "Powerful—containment wards, I think. Better not to disturb it." She glanced back at them with a mix of apprehension and grim determination.
Seraphine nodded slowly, mind racing as she processed the implications. If this was an ancient guardian or prison-bound entity, they'd just undone centuries of containment. The thought sent fresh unease through her, but they couldn't turn back now—Merrin and Varrika were still missing.
"We need to find them," Seraphine said softly. "But we must prepare for what happens when it fully awakens." She glanced at Jeane, then back at Merrin. "Move carefully—stay close, watch each other's backs."
Jeane nodded in agreement, her wings beating slowly as she maintained position near the entity. "Agreed," she replied, her voice a breath. "Find a way around without disturbing it further—the last thing we need is for it to wake up while we navigate these passages."
Seraphine took a deep breath, steeling herself. "Alright," she whispered. "Move along the wall opposite—stay close, stay quiet, watch for signs of Merrin or Varrika." She began to edge past the corner, pressing against the stone as she moved forward with agonizing slowness.
Jeane followed suit, hovering above ground to maintain safe distance from both entity and walls. Merrin brought up the rear, movements cautious as she navigated the confined space while keeping an eye on their discovery behind them.
As they moved deeper, the ambient magic pressed in thicker still, almost physical now. The distant chanting or whispering continued unabated, echoing off the walls in impossible-to-locate ways. Seraphine found herself holding her breath at times, straining to hear any movement beyond their own footsteps on ancient stone.
Suddenly, Jeane held up a hand for them to stop, her wings beating more rapidly as she focused ahead. "I sense... something," she whispered, eyes narrowing in concentration. "Magic—different, contained." She hovered lower to get a better view around the next bend.
Seraphine moved up beside her, peering cautiously around the corner. Darkness and glowing walls at first, then—a huddled shape against the wall, barely visible in dim light.
"Is that...?" Merrin's voice came from behind them, filled with hope and apprehension.
Jeane nodded slowly, expression grim. "It looks like it," she replied, wings beating faster as she prepared to investigate further. "Stay back—whatever this is, it doesn't feel friendly." With that, she began to glide forward, powerful wings carrying her silently around the corner towards the huddled figure.
As Jeane approached, the figure stirred and let out a low moan echoing through the passage. Seraphine felt a chill run down her spine—this was far more dangerous than mere traps or ledges. Whatever lay ahead was ancient, powerful, and likely very angry at their intrusion.
The figure slowly turned to face them as Jeane hovered closer, revealing a withered humanoid form covered in pulsating symbols. Its eyes were closed, but its mouth moved as if uttering silent words while the chanting or whispering grew louder still.
"By the goddess..." Seraphine breathed, knuckles turning white on the bar. "What is that thing?" Jeane's voice came back strained but controlled. "Powerful—containment wards, I think. Better not to disturb it." She glanced back at them with a mix of apprehension and grim determination.
