As Jeane continues to question the demon, it responds with a voice that sends shivers down Merrin's spine. "I am Zha'thik, a minor entity from the lower planes," the demon says, its words dripping with malevolent intent. "I was bound by contract to serve Halie, but she failed to provide the proper rituals and sacrifices, freeing me from her control."

The guardian, sensing an opportunity, begins to close in on Zha'thik, its presence growing more menacing by the second. The chamber shudders violently as another section of the wall collapses, sending a fresh wave of dust and debris raining down upon the party. Jeane's sigil flares brighter, creating a visible barrier around her position on the ledge. Seraphine's eyes widen in alarm as she struggles to maintain the barrier around Varrika. "We need to get Varrika to safety, now!" she exclaims, her voice rising above the din of the collapsing chamber.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The air grows thicker with dust as more debris falls from above, and the chamber shudders ominously. Seraphine, that barrier around Varrika better hold or we're all dead! Jeane snaps, her crimson eyes blazing with impatience. This is no time for your usual half-assed magic! She glares at Merrin cowering behind stalagmites. Out from hiding now, you useless excuse for a scout! We need every able body to move Varrika and distract this overgrown undead menace! Zha'thik's presence pulses with dark energy as it considers Jeane's ultimatum. The sigil at her feet flares brighter, binding tendrils inching closer. Two... one... The demon hisses with frustration but then speaks up. Very well! I shall assist you, for now. It moves toward Seraphine and Varrika, its movements fluid and unsettling.

Jeane's crossbow remains aimed at the guardian as she addresses Merrin again. Move, you fool! Distract it while we get Varrika to safety! The chamber shudders violently once more, sending a fresh cascade of dust and stone raining down. Jeane's wings beat furiously to keep her hovering position stable.

She mutters under her breath as she prepares a spell, arcane energy gathering in her palm. If this demon betrays us... well, let's just say I have special preparations for entities who cross me. With a sharp gesture, Jeane launches a burst of concussive force toward the guardian, aiming to disrupt its movement and give Merrin an opening to create a distraction.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the strain of maintaining the barrier around Varrika intensify as the chamber shakes again, sending fresh dust and debris raining down upon us. Jeane's words cut through the chaos like a knife, her impatience a welcome jolt to my focus. She's right—we need every able body working together now. My eyes dart around the ledge, taking in the scene with a new sense of urgency. The guardian is closing in on Zha'thik, its presence a looming threat that could easily shift its attention back to us. I watch as Jeane launches a burst of concussive force toward the undead creature, her spell aimed at disrupting its movement and giving Merrin an opening to create a distraction.
The demon Zha'thik, unbound by Halie's incompetent summoning ritual, now moves with fluid grace toward Seraphine and Varrika. Its presence pulses with dark energy that sends a shiver down my spine. I can feel the magic crackling in the air around it, ancient and malevolent.
As Zha'thik approaches, I see Seraphine's face contort with effort as she struggles to maintain her protective spell over Varrika. The unconscious halfling lies still on the ledge, completely vulnerable.
I know what must be done. We have no choice but to trust in this demon's temporary aid or risk losing Varrika altogether. With a sharp nod of determination, I begin to gather my own magic, weaving a new spell designed to create a temporary gateway for Varrika to escape the immediate danger.
My hands move in intricate patterns as I murmur the incantation under my breath, drawing upon the last dregs of my magical reserves. The air around me shimmers, and a small portal begins to open at my side, its edges flickering with an otherworldly blue light.
"I have created a way out for Varrika,"
I call out to Jeane and Seraphine over the din of the collapsing chamber. "But we'll need to get her through it quickly before the guardian recovers from your spell."
I gesture to the shimmering portal, its presence a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos. It's a desperate plan, but it might be our only chance to save Varrika and continue our quest for the Time-Splitting Sword.*

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

As Jeane's spell explodes outward, disrupting the guardian's movement and sending it reeling, Merrin springs into action. She darts out from behind the stalagmites, her crossbow at the ready. With a fluid motion, she looses a bolt at the guardian, aiming for its shadowy form.

"That's one for Varrika!" Merrin shouts over the din of the collapsing chamber, her voice a mix of determination and barely-contained fear. She reloads her crossbow with deft fingers, her eyes scanning the ledge for any sign of further danger.

Seeing Zha'thik move toward Seraphine and Varrika, Merrin feels a surge of unease. The demon's presence pulses with dark energy, ancient and malevolent. But with Jeane's spell still disrupting the guardian, Merrin knows they need every able body working together now.

As Seraphine begins to weave her spell, creating a shimmering portal at her side, Merrin calls out to her. "Can you hold that opening stable long enough for us to get Varrika through? We can't risk her getting lost in the planes if this thing collapses!"

Merrin keeps her crossbow aimed at the guardian as she moves closer to Seraphine and Varrika, ready to provide cover fire if needed. Her heart hammers against her ribs, adrenaline surging through her veins. This is the moment they've trained for—a test of their skills, their courage, and their ability to work together under impossible odds.

But even as she moves to assist, Merrin's mind races with the implications of their current predicament. If Varrika is lost to them now, not only will they be one step further from completing their quest, but Merrin herself may face a future of isolation and fear without her closest ally. The very thought sends a chill down her spine, even amidst the chaos of the collapsing chamber.

Merrin takes a deep breath, steadying herself as best she can amidst the trembling floor and roaring river. "We've got this," she mutters under her breath, more to herself than to anyone else. "We have to."
