Shadow of the Ancients / Run 010 / Main Story
Round 69 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin fires her crossbow again, this time striking the shadow servant's flank, but it only seems to enrage it further. The creature lunges at Halie, its claws swiping wildly. Halie's demon stands firm, its eyes glowing bright red as it summons a blast of fiery energy to repel the attack.
Jeane hovers above the chasm's edge, her dark wings beating slowly as she surveys the chaos below. That incompetent Halie has done it again—summoning a demon and endangering our entire quest! Her crimson eyes narrow with barely contained fury.
The ancient guardian circles menacingly, its shadow-servant still pursuing Varrika across the ledge. The subterranean river gurgles ominously below. Seraphine, hold that barrier! Merrin, find cover behind those stalagmites! She considers her options carefully, weighing each course of action against the risks. We cannot afford to lose anyone else—not if we hope to retrieve the Time-Splitting Sword and escape this cursed tower. The guardian is too powerful for any of us alone. Jeane's gaze falls upon the writhing mass of shadows giving chase to Varrika. That servant creature moves with unnatural speed—likely an extension of the guardian itself. A direct confrontation would be suicide without proper preparation. The demon that Halie summoned materializes beside Merrin, its eyes burning with otherworldly malice. Jeane's lip curls in disgust. And that abomination Halie conjured! Useless at best, actively hostile at worst. We can't rely on it for anything but chaos. She focuses her attention on the river below—its swift current could provide an escape route if properly controlled. The thought brings a cruel smile to Jeane's lips. Perhaps there's another way down... one that doesn't involve facing that monster head-on. The chamber shudders violently as more stone gives way overhead. Dust fills the air, obscuring vision for precious seconds. Time is running out. We must act now or face being buried alive—or worse, at the guardian's mercy. Jeane's hand moves to her crossbow, fingers tracing the cold metal with familiarity. Very well then. If brute force won't solve this problem, perhaps a different kind of power will have to suffice...
Merrin's eyes dart around the chamber, her mind racing as she tries to formulate a plan. The guardian's shadow-servant is closing in on Varrika, its claws outstretched and ready to tear into her flesh. Halie's demon materializes beside her, its eyes glowing an eerie red as it stalks towards the ancient being, its claws outstretched and ready to tear into the ancient being's flesh.
"Varrika!" Merrin cries out, her voice barely audible over the roar of the river and the snarling of the guardian. "Wake up!"
But the elf remains still, her body limp and unresponsive. Merrin feels a pang of fear in her chest, but she pushes it down, knowing that they must act fast or face certain death at the hands of these ancient beings.
"Jeane," she says, turning to the sorcerer who is hovering above the ledge. "We need to get out of here now!"
She watches as Jeane hesitates, her expression shifting from grim determination to deep thought. The sorcerer's eyes narrow as she considers the possibility, weighing it against the risks.
Halie's demon materializes beside Merrin, its eyes glowing an eerie red as it stalks towards the guardian, its claws outstretched and ready to tear into the ancient being's flesh. The creature from the river continues its slow, deliberate approach, its form solidifying into something more defined—a massive, serpentine being with rows of razor-sharp teeth and clawed appendages.
I feel a surge of protectiveness wash over me as I look at Varrika, lying helplessly on the ground. We must protect the elf at all costs, for the very fate of our mission may depend on her survival.
The party is scattered, each member fighting for their own survival against overwhelming odds. The only thing keeping them together is Seraphine's desperate will and Jeane's impending arrival. But even that may not be enough against the sheer power of these ancient, awakened beings. As another stalagmite crumbles to the ground, I feel a deep, gnawing fear settle into my bones. We have no way out, no escape from this living tomb.
But I will not give up. Not now, not ever. For I am a survivor, and I will face whatever challenges await them with courage and determination in my heart.
The chamber trembles with an ominous rumble as another stalagmite crashes to the ground nearby, sending a shower of dust and pebbles across the ledge where I stand. The air is thick with the acrid scent of ancient stone and the low, menacing growl of the awakened guardian circling Varrika like a predator stalking its prey. My heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of fear and desperate purpose as I watch Merrin frantically trying to wake the unconscious elf.
I can feel the raw, unfettered power coursing through this place, a palpable energy that crackles against my skin, even through the protective wards I hastily wove around myself earlier. It's a wild, untamed thing, and it feels like it could tear me apart if given half a chance. My hands tremble as I clench them into fists at my sides, summoning every ounce of my magical strength to maintain the shield spell I've cast over Varrika. Every muscle in my body screams with effort, but I know I cannot afford to let it falter.
"Hold on, Varrika," I whisper under my breath, my voice lost amidst the chaos. "We're going to get you out of here."
My gaze darts around the chamber, searching for an escape route, a weakness in the guardian's defenses, anything that might give us an edge. But all I see are more stalactites ready to fall and the relentless advance of the shadow creature that seems to have sprung from the very darkness itself. It moves with unnatural speed, its form shifting and twisting like smoke one moment and solidifying into something terrifyingly real the next.
Jeane is right—this is no ordinary foe. This is a being born of ancient magic, a force older than the tower itself, and it seems intent on claiming Varrika as some kind of prize. I watch as Halie's summoned demon materializes beside Merrin, its eyes glowing an eerie red as it stalks towards the guardian, claws outstretched. A small part of me marvels at the raw power of Halie's summoning spell, even as another part recoils in horror at the chaos it has unleashed.
I know I should be focusing on the demon, on finding a way to control or banish it before it causes more harm. But my mind keeps returning to Varrika, lying so vulnerable on the cold stone ground. She is our mission's greatest asset, the key to unraveling the secrets of this place. And she is my friend, someone I have sworn to protect with all the power at my command.
As another stalagmite crumbles, sending a cloud of dust into the air, I feel a surge of determination course through me. This is no time for hesitation or doubt. We are in the heart of darkness now, and we must fight our way out or be consumed by it completely.
"I will not let them take you," I mutter, my voice rising above the din. I begin to weave a new spell, one designed to disrupt the guardian's focus and give Merrin a chance to get Varrika to safety. It's a desperate gambit, but in this moment of sheer chaos, desperation feels like our only ally.
I feel the magic gathering around me, a low hum that builds in my chest until it feels ready to burst forth. I take a deep breath, steadying myself as best I can amidst the trembling floor and roaring river. Then, with a final, silent prayer to any god who might be listening, I release the spell into the world, watching as a brilliant flare of blue light explodes outward from my hands, seeking the heart of the ancient guardian's power.
Let this be enough. Let this buy us the time we need. Because if we fail here, in this moment, then all of our efforts have been for nothing. The Time-Splitting Sword will remain lost, and we will die not as heroes, but as forgotten souls trapped forever in the darkness of this accursed place.
