The chamber shuddered violently, another stalagmite crumbling with a deafening crack that echoed off the walls. Dust swirled in the air, thick and choking, mixing with the roar of the river and the snarling of the guardian. Seraphine felt the ground tremble beneath her feet, a sickening lurch that sent fresh fear coursing through her exhausted body.
Halie's demon materialized beside Merrin, its eyes glowing an eerie red as it stalked towards the ancient creature, claws extended and ready to tear into its flesh. The thing from the river continued its slow, deliberate approach, its form shifting and twisting like a living nightmare. Seraphine felt her stomach drop as she watched, helpless to intervene.
"Jeane!" Merrin's voice rose above the chaos, desperate and pleading.* "We need to get out of here now!" The halfling woman looked up at the hovering sorcerer, her dark wings beating slowly as she surveyed the scene below. Seraphine knew they were running out of time—time to escape, time to save Varrika, time to complete their quest before the entire tower collapsed around them.
The air crackled with ancient power, the very stones humming with malevolent energy. Seraphine could feel it, a cold chill that seeped into her bones despite her protective spells. The ward was active now, its power growing with each passing moment. And Merrin was trapped down there, alone except for Halie's demon and whatever other horrors the darkness might hold.
Seraphine began casting a spell, her voice barely audible over the roaring of the river and the crumbling stone. "I'll find a way to get you out," she whispered, more to herself than to Merrin. "Just... just stay alive." The magic swirled around her fingers, crackling with arcane energy as she focused on finding a solution—a spell, a spell, anything—that could save her friend from the depths of this cursed tower.
She knew time was running out.
