The tension in Chamber beneath the tower's foundation, filled with ancient runes and glowing crystals tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I stare into the abyss where Merrin vanished, my heart pounding in my chest. The scuttling sounds grow louder, and I can see movement in the darkness below. It's clear that whatever Halie summoned has burrowed its way out of the pit and is now trying to escape. I raise my staff, ready to cast another spell, when a sudden thought crosses my mind. What if this thing knows how to get through the guardian's defenses? It seems to be some kind of burrowing creature, and it has already managed to escape from the pit. Perhaps it can lead us to a way out of this chamber that the rest of them cannot see. The idea is risky, even dangerous, but so is staying here. With a deep breath, I lower my staff and take a step back from the edge of the pit. I have to find Merrin and Varrika first, and then we can make a plan together. The demon's screams have died down, leaving only the frantic scratching as the dominant sound in the chamber. I call out into the darkness, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "Merrin! Varrika! Can you hear me? Are you alright?" My heart pounds in my chest as I wait for a response, hoping that whatever Halie has unleashed hasn't already claimed their lives.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I circle above the pit, watching the demon squirm with barely contained disgust. Its many eyes fix on me, glistening with malice in the runic light. I let my wings beat once more—slowly, deliberately—as a reminder of what I am capable of. This thing may be loose, but it's clearly not free: bound to this place by magic older than any of us. Halie, I think bitterly, what have you unleashed? The creature before me looks like a nightmare worm with too many legs and eyes that glisten with malice in the runic light. I descend slowly through the air, maintaining altitude above its reach. The worm-creature recoils briefly at my approach, but then freezes mid-squirm as I speak—a calculated risk, but necessary for information quickly: what it did with Merrin and Varrika, its purpose here, and whether it can actually help us bypass the guardian. The demon's head swivels towards me with unnatural speed, its many eyes fixing on my position above. I begin my interrogation: "You," I say coldly to the creature below, my voice cutting through the chamber like a razor and carrying an edge of compulsion that makes even the runes on the walls flicker in response. The worm-creature freezes, its attention now fully on me as it writhes with some kind of magical communication. As I circle slowly above, Seraphine steps back from the pit edge looking up at me—clearly awed but also apprehensive about what she's witnessing. Her voice comes to me faintly: "Did you see that?" Of course I saw it, I think with a flicker of irritation. The runes pulse faster, their light growing brighter as the creature's movements intensify. A low humming sound fills the chamber and I can feel the power building around us—it's like the air itself is being charged with arcane energy. Suddenly one rune near the creature flares to life, casting a blinding white light across the entire chamber. The worm-thing screams—a high-pitched, otherworldly sound that makes my ears ache—and then begins burrowing even faster, its body disappearing into the stone floor with unnatural speed. I watch as a massive section of the floor near Merrin and Varrika's voices collapses inward, creating a new hole that leads down into darkness. A gust of cold, fetid air rushes up from the opening. A tunnel, I realize grimly. The demon has dug us a way out—or possibly trapped them further. Seraphine calls up to me: "That... that was incredible," she says, her voice filled with both amazement and concern. "But where does it lead? And how do we know it's safe?"

I descend closer to Seraphine—still maintaining altitude above the pit—and speak in a low tone: "It leads down," I reply coolly. "Probably deeper into the tower, possibly towards whatever Halie summoned... or worse." The runes on the walls continue to pulse, their light now illuminating the new tunnel. "We don't know it's safe," I admit flatly. "But we also don't have many other options right now—Merrin and Varrika are down there, possibly trapped. And given Halie’s performance so far..." I let the implication hang heavy between us. I glance back at the new tunnel opening, then to Seraphine's nervous face. "We go down," I decide finally. "But carefully. Stay alert for traps or more... surprises."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I look down into the yawning darkness of the new tunnel, my heart hammering in my chest. The air coming up from below is cold and fetid, carrying the unmistakable scent of ancient magic and decay. Deeper into the tower, I think grimly. Just what we need.
I turn to Jeane, who has descended to perch on a nearby ledge, her wings folding neatly against her back. Her expression is one of grim determination, but I can see the worry in her eyes too. She’s right, of course—we have no choice. Merrin and Varrika are down there, possibly trapped or worse, and we can’t just leave them.
"I agree," I say, my voice steadier than I feel. "We have to go down there." I gesture towards the tunnel with my staff, its runes glowing faintly in the dim light of the chamber. "But we need to be careful. That creature... it was clearly bound to something, and whatever it was, it knew how to get through this guardian's defenses."
I take a step closer to the edge of the pit, peering into the darkness. The runes on the walls are still pulsing, their light casting eerie shadows across the stone floor. It feels like the entire chamber is holding its breath, waiting for us to make our move.
"Whatever Halie summoned," I murmur, more to myself than to Jeane, "it seems to have some kind of... purpose here." I shake my head, trying to clear the thought. "No time to figure that out now. We need to find Merrin and Varrika before it's too late."
I look back up at Jeane, my expression serious. "What do you think? Should we try to follow the creature down there, or look for another way?"
As I wait for her response, a sudden noise from above catches my attention—a sharp crack, like the sound of stone breaking. I look up just in time to see a massive boulder tumbling down the stairs we just climbed, heading straight for us.
