Round 54 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine finishes her spell, the demon stumbles backward, its charred flesh smoking. It attempts to retreat into one of the alcoves, but the Prison Guardian's presence causes the stone wall to shudder and collapse, trapping the demon in a rubble-filled pit. The demon's screams echo through the chamber as it's crushed beneath the falling debris. The chamber's pulsating runes grow brighter, illuminating the room with an eerie light. The air thickens with ancient energy, and Seraphine feels the power of the crystals coursing through her veins. She takes a step closer to the alcove where Merrin and Varrika are trapped, her staff at the ready. A faint scratching sound emanates from the other side of the pit, growing louder by the second. It's clear that whatever is making the noise is trying to escape or dig its way out.
I hover near the ceiling's edge, my wings beating slowly to keep me aloft as I scan the chaos below with cold, appraising eyes. The glyph Halie triggered was clearly a trap designed to lure careless fools into its maw—but even by my standards of contempt for human limitations, her summoning a demon in an ancient labyrinth takes breathtaking levels of stupidity. If Merrin and Varrika die down there because of that girl's incompetence... My fingers tighten around the mace as I think of her carelessness.
This place is crawling with something. And those crystals—I need to figure out what they do before I act. I begin casting a silent spell—my hand moving in intricate patterns as I focus on extending my senses—and the darkness parts for me slightly, revealing glimpses of the chamber's layout and its occupants. One large...thing near the center. Multiple smaller shapes scuttling along the walls and around those alcoves. And three distinct auras—Merrin, Varrika, and something else. Something old. Something powerful. My wings shift restlessly as I consider my options; too many unknowns to act blindly. Fine, I mutter, steeling myself. Let's see what we're dealing with here.
The demon's screams echo through the chamber as Seraphine finishes her spell, its charred flesh smoking and its body trapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed alcove. The ancient runes on the walls pulse with an eerie, otherworldly light, bathing everything in a strange glow. She can feel the power of the crystals humming through the air, and she knows that whatever is making the scuttling sound below is no ordinary threat.
She takes a step closer to the edge of the pit where Merrin and Varrika are trapped, her staff held at the ready. The scratching noise grows louder, more frantic, and she can see movement in the darkness below. It's clear that whatever Halie summoned has burrowed its way out of the pit and is now trying to escape.
Seraphine's mind races as she considers their options. They're trapped between a demonic entity and an ancient prison guardian, with no clear way out. She looks back towards the chamber entrance, where Jeane was last seen hovering near the ceiling. The sorcerer seems to be scanning the room with her unique senses, but Seraphine knows they can't wait for her to finish her assessment.
The air thickens around them, and Seraphine feels a sudden chill run down her spine. She recognizes this sensation—the dark magic of the prison guardian is awakening, its ancient power surging through the chamber. It's a feeling that makes her skin crawl with dread.
She turns her attention back to the pit, where the scratching has become a frantic, desperate sound. Whatever it is, it seems to be in agony, and Seraphine wonders if this could be their key out of here. She raises her staff, ready to cast another spell, when a sudden thought crosses her mind.
What if... what if this thing knows how to get through the guardian's defenses? It seems to be some kind of burrowing creature, and it has already managed to escape from the pit. Perhaps it can lead them to a way out of this chamber that the rest of them cannot see.
The idea is risky, even dangerous, but so is staying here. With a deep breath, Seraphine lowers her staff and takes a step back from the edge of the pit. She has to find Merrin and Varrika first, and then they can make a plan together. The demon's screams have died down, leaving only the frantic scratching as the dominant sound in the chamber.
She calls out into the darkness, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Merrin! Varrika! Can you hear me? Are you alright?" Her heart pounds in her chest as she waits for a response, hoping that whatever Halie has unleashed hasn't already claimed their lives.
