Seraphine slammed her staff into the ground with a grunt of effort, a burst of arcane power erupting from its tip and spreading outwards in a shimmering dome around her. The demon lunged again, its claws scraping against the invisible barrier with a high-pitched screech that made her teeth ache. She could feel the creature's malevolent energy pressing against her defenses, testing for weaknesses. "Merrin! Varrika!" she shouted, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Can you hear me? I'm here—both of you stay put and don't engage anything!" The air was thick with magic now, the very stones seeming to vibrate with ancient power. Seraphine's sharp eyes darted around the chamber, taking in every detail—the ominous runes pulsing with dark energy, the scuttling sounds growing louder from somewhere below. She needed to find a way down to her trapped companions, and fast.
"Jeane!" she called out, her voice tight with urgency. "I need your eyes up here—any sign of more threats or weaknesses in this ward? I'm about to try descending, but I don't want to trigger something worse!" The demon snarled at her, its eyes burning with hatred as it pressed against the barrier again. Seraphine gritted her teeth and prepared another spell, ready to defend herself if needed.
Meanwhile, far above in the chamber's upper reaches, Jeane hovered near the ceiling's edge, her dark wings beating slowly to maintain altitude. The succubus woman's crimson eyes gleamed with cold amusement as she watched the chaos unfold below. Halie's demon-summoning stunt had been... impressive in its sheer stupidity, she had to admit. But the consequences were now Jeane's problem to manage while Seraphine played hero down in the depths.
If Merrin and Varrika die down there because of that girl's incompetence... Her grip tightened on her mace as she thought of Halie, currently trapped behind a magical barrier with her own summoned demon. The irony was almost poetic—though not quite enough to make up for the hassle of cleaning up this mess.
Fine. She'd play guardian angel and keep an eye on things from above while Seraphine handled the ground game. It wasn't her preferred role, but someone had to ensure their little expedition didn't completely implode before they even reached the tower's core. And clearly, that responsibility had fallen to her.
With a sigh that ruffled her long white hair, Jeane began a slow circuit of the chamber's upper perimeter, her keen eyes scanning every inch for hidden dangers or opportunities. The glyph Halie had triggered was clearly more than just a decorative carving—it had some purpose, some connection to the tower's deeper defenses. And understanding that purpose might be the key to navigating whatever lay ahead.
As she flew, Jeane's mind worked through possibilities and contingencies. The scuttling sounds from below were troubling—what manner of creature made such noise in these ancient halls? And the way the very stones seemed to pulse with magic... yes, this place was alive in some sense, its power awakened by their presence.
She'd need to be careful. Careful, and clever. Because unlike a certain reckless sorceress downstairs, Jeane had no intention of dying in this gods-forsaken tower due to someone else's carelessness.
Right then. Time to put those sharp eyes and even sharper mind to work. She'd document every detail, map every rune, and catalog every potential threat from her vantage point above. If Seraphine needed backup—or if Halie somehow managed to make things worse—Jeane would be ready.
And if the tower tried any more of its tricks? Well, she'd simply have to show it exactly why one didn't anger a succubus with a grudge and a mace.
With that thought, Jeane focused her attention on the chamber below, her expression settling into one of cold determination as she began her detailed survey of the situation. The game had changed, but the rules remained the same: survive, adapt, and above all—do not let others' incompetence become your downfall.
This is going to be a long night. She thought with a grimace, but her eyes never left their vigilant scan of the magical battlefield unfolding beneath her.
