Round 53 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Seraphine's defensive spell crackles with magical energy, casting a barrier between herself and the demon. The creature lunges forward, its jaws wide open, but the spell holds firm, sending it stumbling backward as it crashes into the stone wall behind her. The force of its impact sends shockwaves through the ground, causing the chamber to tremble. As Seraphine catches her breath, she notices that the demon's claws have left deep gashes in the stone, and the air is thick with the smell of ozone and burned rock. The Prison Guardian's malevolent presence seems to be drawing energy from the demon's attacks, its dark shadow growing larger as it watches Seraphine with an unblinking gaze.
I hear the screeching of the demon and the crackle of Seraphine's spells above me. The sounds are muffled by the earth above but unmistakable. She's in a fight, and it sounds bad.
Varrika is beside me, her face etched with concern as she strains to hear what's happening topside. Halie is unconscious, her breathing shallow and labored. The fall must have knocked her out, and the fear of her summoning still haunts us.
I reach for my crossbow, my hands moving by instinct even as my mind races. We're trapped down here, underground with no way to climb back up, and something terrible is happening above. The scuttling sounds are getting louder, and I can feel the earth tremble beneath my feet as if the very walls are shifting.
I turn to Varrika, my voice low. "We need to find a way out of here. Now. Before whatever Halie summoned decides to come down and pay us a visit."
She nods, her hand tightening on her staff. "I agree. But where? We don't know these tunnels, and there could be more demons or worse waiting for us in the dark."
I grit my teeth, my eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. "Then we'll have to fight our way through. We can't stay here and wait to die."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. Whatever happens next, we're going to face it together. I look at Varrika, my expression hardening with grim determination.
"Let's move out. Stay close, stay quiet, and be ready for anything. We've got each other's backs now. And Merrin Quickstep doesn't leave anyone behind."
With that, I turn and start to move deeper into the tunnels, my crossbow at the ready and my heart pounding in my chest. The darkness ahead is thick and full of unknown terrors, but we have no choice. We must push forward, even as the weight of everything that's happened threatens to crush us.
I only hope that whatever we find waiting for us in the depths, we're strong enough to face it. Because if we can't... then there may be no way out at all.
I hover at the ceiling's edge, my wings barely stirring, and scan every surface and shadow for threats with predatory focus. The air is thick down there—old magic mixed with fresh terror—and the glyph on that tree root was clearly a trap designed to lure careless fools into its maw. But Halie surpasses even my expectations of incompetence; summoning a demon in an ancient labyrinth? That girl has no sense at all, and now Merrin and Varrika are trapped below with whatever monstrosity she unleashed. My fingers tighten around the mace as I think of her carelessness. If they die down there because of this... Seraphine's teleportation spell activates suddenly, a surge of magical energy that draws my attention immediately. Good—at least she managed to follow through on that part. But now we have two unknown threats: whatever Halie summoned, and whatever is scuttling around down here.
This place is crawling with something. I mutter, more to myself than anyone else. And those crystals—I need to figure out what they do before I act. I begin casting a silent spell—my hand moving in intricate patterns as I focus on extending my senses—and the darkness parts for me slightly, revealing glimpses of the chamber's layout and its occupants.
There. I mutter softly. One large...thing near the center. Multiple smaller shapes scuttling along the walls and around those alcoves. And three distinct auras—Merrin, Varrika, and something else. Something old. Something powerful. My wings shift restlessly as I consider my options; too many unknowns to act blindly. First, I need to know what Halie summoned and if it's bound by conventional rules. If this is some kind of demon lord or unbound entity, my spells won't work worth a damn. Fine. I mutter, steeling myself. Let's see what we're dealing with here.
I stand my ground as the demon lunges at me again, its claws raking the air just inches from my face. The sound of its screeching is deafening in the confined space of the chamber, but I can still hear the faint echoes of Merrin and Varrika's voices coming from somewhere below. They're trapped, and I'm their only hope of escape.
The demon's attacks are growing more desperate, more frantic with each passing second. It seems to be feeding off the dark energy that permeates this place, growing stronger by the moment. I can feel the power building behind me too—the ancient runes on the walls beginning to glow with an eerie, pulsating light.
I raise my staff higher, channeling more of my own magic into its core. The rune at its tip flares brightly, casting a blue-white light that illuminates the chamber and the demon's grotesque features in stark detail. Its eyes are wide with hunger, its mouth a permanent snarl of rage and pain.
"You want to eat me?" I shout over the demon's screeching, my voice ringing out clear and defiant. "You'll have to take me alive first!"
With a wordless cry, I send a blast of pure magical force hurtling towards the creature. The spell slams into its chest with a resounding crack, sending it flying backward into one of the alcoves containing a glowing crystal. The impact shatters the stone, and the crystal's energy explodes outwards in a brilliant burst of light and sound.
The demon screams as the energy washes over it, its form seeming to flicker and distort for a moment before solidifying once more. It struggles to its feet, smoke rising from its charred flesh, but I can see that my attack has weakened it. The other demons in the chamber scuttle back into the shadows, their eyes fixed on me with a newfound wariness.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic beating of my heart. That was close. Too close. But I can't afford to be careless now—the demon is still very much alive, and whatever it was Halie summoned down here seems to be growing stronger by the second.
I turn back towards the spot where Merrin and Varrika's voices came from, trying to gauge their distance. They're close—maybe a hundred feet below me—but the path down seems blocked by more of these demons and some kind of magical barrier that pulses with the same dark energy as the runes above. It's going to be a long, hard fight.
I grip my staff tighter, feeling its familiar weight against my palm. This is what I trained for. This is why I became a wizard—to face the unknown, to unravel the mysteries of magic and combat. And right now, that training is all that stands between us and whatever horrors lie waiting in the depths of this accursed place.
I take a step forward, my eyes scanning the chamber for any sign of weakness or advantage. The demon struggles to its feet once more, its wounds still smoking, but I pay it no mind. It's just one more obstacle in my path. My focus is on Merrin and Varrika, on finding a way down to them and getting us all out of here alive.
The chamber trembles again as the Prison Guardian shifts its bulk behind me. Its presence is a constant, oppressive weight, a reminder of the ancient evil that permeates this place. But even that doesn't deter me. I have to be strong. For them. For the mission. And for myself.
I raise my staff higher, ready to face whatever comes next. The battle isn't over yet, but I'm ready to fight until my last breath. We all are.
