Shadow of the Ancients / Run 010 / Main Story
Round 52 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The Prison Guardian's roar echoes through the chamber, causing the ancient runes on the walls to shudder and tremble. The air seems to grow even heavier with dark energy as it takes a step forward, its massive form looming over Seraphine. Jeane, still hidden in the darkness above, casts a spell of misdirection, creating a flash of light that distracts the guardian momentarily. The flash illuminates the chamber for a brief moment, revealing that the room is roughly the size of a large tent, with a series of alcoves carved into the walls. Each alcove contains a small, glowing crystal that seems to be linked to the ancient runes on the walls. The crystals pulse with a soft blue light, casting an eerie glow over the chamber.
I hover in the darkness above the chamber floor, my wings barely stirring as I scan every surface and shadow for threats. The air is thick with the stench of decay and something else—old magic, dark and hungry. The glyph on the tree root was clearly a trap, but Halie's stupidity surpassed even my worst expectations. Summoning a demon in an ancient labyrinth? That girl has no sense at all. My fingers tighten around my mace as I think of her carelessness. If Merrin and Varrika die because of this... Seraphine's teleportation spell activates, and the sudden surge of magical energy draws my attention to a shimmering portal forming in one corner of the chamber. Good—at least she managed to follow through on that part. But now we have two unknown threats: whatever Halie summoned, and whatever is scuttling around down here.
This place is crawling with something. I whisper, more to myself than anyone else. And those crystals—I need to figure out what they do before I act. I begin casting a silent spell, my hand moving in intricate patterns as I focus on extending my senses. The darkness parts for me slightly, revealing glimpses of the chamber's layout and its occupants.
There. I mutter softly. One large...thing near the center. Multiple smaller shapes scuttling along the walls and around those alcoves. And three distinct auras—Merrin, Varrika, and...something else. Something old. Something powerful. My wings shift restlessly as I consider my options. Too many unknowns to act blindly. First, I need to know what Halie summoned and if it's bound by conventional rules. If this is some kind of demon lord or unbound entity, my spells won't work worth a damn. The scuttling sounds grow louder, more frantic now. Time is running out for Merrin and Varrika.
Fine. I mutter, steeling myself. Let's see what we're dealing with here. I begin casting a detection spell—a subtle magic that should reveal the nature of Halie's summoning without drawing its attention. My fingers trace sigils in the air as I whisper the incantation, careful to keep my voice too low for human ears.
This better work. I mutter as the spell takes hold, my eyes closing in concentration.
I land hard on the rough stone floor of the chamber, my staff clattering against the ground as I struggle to maintain my balance. The sudden change in location is disorienting, and for a moment I feel like the world is spinning around me. The scuttling sounds are louder here, a constant, maddening rhythm coming from all around me.
My eyes dart around the dimly lit room, taking in the ancient runes etched into the walls and the series of alcoves containing glowing crystals. Each crystal pulses with a soft blue light, casting an eerie glow over the chamber. I can feel the power radiating off them, a low hum that seems to vibrate right through my bones.
The Prison Guardian is nowhere to be seen, but its presence lingers in the heavy air like a bad taste at the back of my throat. I know it's waiting, watching. It knows I'm here now.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. This isn't what we planned at all. But then again, nothing about this mission has gone according to plan since we set foot in these accursed woods. I draw my staff closer, its familiar weight a small comfort in the unknown depths of this place.
Suddenly, a voice cuts through the air—Jeane's voice, but it sounds strange, distorted somehow.
"Seraphine! Are you there? Can you hear me?"
I look up, trying to locate the source of the sound. There—a faint shimmer in the air near the ceiling. Jeane must be using some kind of magical communication spell.
"I'm here," I call back, my voice echoing slightly in the confined space. "Where are Merrin and Varrika?"
I can feel a chill run down my spine as I wait for her reply. Whatever happened down here, whatever Halie unleashed... we're going to have to face it together.
The scuttling sound grows louder, more frantic now. It's coming from somewhere behind me. I whirl around, staff at the ready, just as a massive, shadowy form emerges from one of the alcoves. It's not the Prison Guardian—this is something else entirely. A demon, perhaps? Or some other creature birthed from the darkest reaches of this place.
Its eyes lock onto mine, twin points of malevolent crimson in the gloom. It opens its maw wide, revealing rows of jagged fangs, and lets out a chilling screech that seems to burrow right into my skull. The force of it nearly knocks me off my feet.
I stumble back, my heart hammering against my ribs. This is bad. This is so much worse than I ever imagined. With a deep breath, I begin to cast a defensive spell, the familiar patterns of the incantation rising easily to my lips. The demon lunges forward, its claws slashing through the air where my head was just moments before.
I dive to the side, rolling across the rough stone floor and coming up in a crouch. The demon's attack missed me by inches, but I can feel the heat of its passing, a wave of searing pain that leaves a red line across my arm. I grit my teeth, ignoring the sting as I raise my staff, channeling my power into its head.
"Jeane!" I shout, my voice straining with effort. "We need to get out of here! Now!"
But even as I call for her, I know it's too late. The demon is already turning back towards me, its eyes glowing with an otherworldly hunger. And behind it, in the shadows of the chamber, I can see more shapes moving. More demons. More nightmares given form by Halie's foolishness.
I am trapped here, deep underground, with no way out but through this creature and whatever else lies waiting for us in the darkness ahead. And Merrin and Varrika... they're somewhere down here too, at the mercy of these horrors.
The weight of it all presses down on me—our mission, our lives, everything we've worked for. But there is no time for fear now. Only action will see us through this nightmare.
I take a deep breath, my hands tightening on my staff, and I prepare to fight. Whatever this demon is, whatever these runes and crystals do... I will unravel their secrets. And I will find Merrin and Varrika, even if it means tearing this entire accursed place apart piece by piece.
My staff hums with power as I raise it high, the runes along its length flaring to life. The demon snarls, a sound like shattering glass, and launches itself at me once more. This time, I am ready.
The battle begins.*
