Seraphine's descent into the depths of the tower was a plunge into pure, unadulterated darkness. The air grew heavy and thick with an otherworldly energy that made her skin crawl, each breath tasting of dust and something far more sinister. She landed hard on the rough stone floor, her staff clattering against the ground as she struggled to maintain her balance. The sudden change in location was disorienting, and for a moment she felt like the world was spinning around her.

Her sharp eyes darted around the dimly lit room, taking in the ancient runes that covered every surface and the ominous glow emanating from deep within the earthen pit. The scuttling sounds were louder here, a constant, maddening rhythm coming from all around her. She could hear Varrika's desperate cries echoing up from the abyss below, and she knew time was running out.

I need to understand this ward, she thought frantically, her mind racing as she studied each intricate pattern in turn. The summoning mark pulsed with its own malevolent heartbeat, its dark energy seeming to feed on the very air around them. What have you done, Halie? she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

Meanwhile, far above in the tower's upper reaches, Jeane hovered in the darkness of a hidden alcove, her wings barely stirring as she scanned every surface and shadow for threats. The air was thick with the stench of decay and something else—old magic, dark and hungry. The glyph on the tree root had clearly been a trap, but Halie's stupidity had surpassed even her worst expectations.

Summoning a demon in an ancient labyrinth? she thought, appalled. That girl has no sense at all. She knew she should have kept a closer eye on the inexperienced summoner, but who could have predicted such reckless incompetence? Now they were facing not only the tower's original defenses but also whatever hellish entity Halie had so carelessly unleashed.

Focus, she told herself, forcing her attention back to the task at hand. I need to find a way to help Seraphine and the others without getting myself killed. She knew her magical abilities were potent, but they were useless against enemies she couldn't see or properly target from such a distance. And the last thing she needed was to stumble into whatever fresh disaster Halie had cooked up.

The glyphs pulsed again with their eerie green light, seeming to leech the color from everything around them—even the torchlight appeared sickly and weak in comparison. Seraphine stood frozen at the edge of the pit, her sharp eyes fixed on the swirling darkness below as she tried to decipher the meaning behind the ancient symbols etched into the tree root.

The air around them was thick with an otherworldly energy that made her skin crawl, she thought frantically, and I can hear Varrika's desperate cries echoing up from the abyss. I need to understand this ward, she realized, her mind racing as she studied each intricate pattern in turn. The summoning mark pulsed with its own malevolent heartbeat, its dark energy seeming to feed on the very air around them.

What have you done, Halie? she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.
