Halie's eyes widen in horror as she realizes what Jeane and Seraphine have seen, and she drops to her knees beside the edge of the abyss, her hands grasping the stone wall as if it might keep her from falling into the unknown depths. The scuttling sounds grow louder still, the air thickening with an otherworldly energy that seems to pulse in time with Halie's frantic heartbeat.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's stomach lurches as she plummets into the abyss, the wind whipping past her ears and the sound of Varrika's distant scream echoing up from below. The halfling rogue's fingers scrabble desperately at the crumbling stone walls, but find no purchase in the slick, moss-covered surface.

As the darkness closes in around her, Merrin's mind races. She thinks of Jeane, still waiting above with Seraphine and Halie. The sorcerer's words about the dangers ahead ring in her ears, a warning that now seems all too prescient. Merrin wonders if they'll ever see each other again, or if this plunge into the unknown will be their final parting.

But even as fear threatens to overwhelm her, Merrin forces herself to focus. She is a survivor, a scout who has navigated countless perils in her travels. This fall may be unlike anything she's faced before, but it is not insurmountable. Not yet.

With a grunt of effort, Merrin manages to twist her body midair, reaching out with one hand to grasp at the edge of the pit. Her fingers close around a jagged projection of rock, and for a moment, she thinks she might be able to halt her descent. But then the stone crumbles beneath her touch, sending her tumbling once more into the depths.

The ground rushes up to meet Merrin with terrifying speed, and she braces herself for the impact, her heart pounding in her chest. She prays to any gods listening that Varrika has fared better than her, that the elf is already at the bottom of this pit, waiting to help her to her feet. Because if not...

Merrin shakes her head, dispelling the thought. There's no use in worrying about what might be. She needs to focus on surviving the fall, and then figuring out how to climb back up to her friends. This abyss may be deep, but it is not endless. And Merrin Quickstep is not the type to be buried alive in some forgotten hole.

With a final, desperate lunge, the halfling rogue reaches out with both hands, her fingers closing around a thick root that protrudes from the pit's wall. She clings to it with all her strength, her arms straining as the root's grip on the crumbling soil threatens to give way.

But then, miraculously, Merrin feels the root hold fast. Her momentum slows, and for a moment, she dangles there in the darkness, catching her breath and thanking whatever gods or luck have seen fit to spare her life thus far.

And as she hangs there, Merrin Quickstep makes a silent vow: she will find her way back up to the surface. She will reunite with Jeane, Seraphine, and Halie. And together, they will face whatever challenges await them in this accursed tower, no matter how deep they may have to go to overcome them.

With a final surge of strength, Merrin begins to haul herself up the root, her muscles burning and her breath coming in ragged gasps. The climb is treacherous, the pit's walls slick with moisture and teeming with unseen dangers. But the halfling rogue does not falter. She will not be deterred from her goal by a little dirt and darkness.

For Merrin Quickstep is a survivor. And she will survive this, no matter what it takes.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I stare into the abyss where Merrin vanished, my wings twitching with barely-suppressed tension as Seraphine's light source illuminates the nightmarish scene below. This is bad. Worse than I feared, though I'd braced for something terrible. The scuttling sounds are closer now—frantic, purposeful—and whatever makes those noises isn't just down there; it's aware of Merrin and Varrika, and moving to intercept them. My mind races through possibilities, weighing options against the rising threat level. I need more information before committing resources into that pit of darkness. The situation has degraded from 'controlled descent' to 'rescue mission in progress,' and I hate operating blind. I turn to Seraphine with a grim expression, my voice tight but controlled. "Before we throw ourselves after them, we need to understand what Halie triggered with the tree glyph." My eyes narrow as I recall her careless handling of the key artifact—another mistake that's now cost us time and put our companions in danger. "Decipher that symbol first," I tell her firmly. "Whatever she activated down there might be the reason Merrin fell and Varrika rushed after her. If we're walking into a trap designed by ancient magic, we need to know its parameters before we join them."

I retrieve my map of the tower's ground floor—the rumored-to-be-inaccurate one—and spread it on a flat stone surface. The glyph Seraphine illuminated matches none of the patterns I studied, which means either our intel is worse than I feared, or this is something new. "Cross-reference that symbol against what we know," I instruct Seraphine. "Check if it resembles any of the ward markings we've seen so far—the ones on the walls and doors." My fingers trace the etched lines in the tree root from memory, the image burned into my mind after Halie's botched interaction with it. "Whatever this glyph means," I continue, my voice taking on a dangerous edge as I think through the implications, "it probably relates to the tower's internal security systems. If Halie inadvertently deactivated a safeguard or alerted something deeper within... we're operating in hostile territory now."

I glance back at the dark maw of the pit, then to Seraphine, my crimson eyes intense. "Decipher that glyph while I maintain overwatch and Varrika tries to find Merrin down there. If it tells us what Halie triggered—whether she disabled a trap or summoned something new—then we can respond strategically rather than panicking into the unknown."

My wings ruffle with barely-contained impatience, but I force myself to remain still, waiting for Seraphine's response and hoping her magical expertise can give us some advantage over this ancient, sentient threat.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel a chill run down my spine at Jeane's words about the dangers ahead, my mind racing as I try to process the enormity of what we've stumbled into. The scuttling sound grows louder still, the air thickening with an otherworldly energy that seems to pulse in time with Halie's frantic heartbeat.
I drop to my knees beside Halie, my hands grasping the stone wall as if it might keep me from falling into the unknown depths of the abyss. The darkness below is absolute, a gaping maw that seems to swallow all light and sound. And yet, I can feel something down there—an ancient, malevolent presence that is now acutely aware of our intrusion.
My eyes dart towards the dark, swirling vortex that now occupies the center of the abyss. It seems to beckon me closer, promising both power and peril in equal measure. "We need a plan," I say, my voice firming as I turn back to Jeane with a grim expression. "And I think I have one."
