Round 44 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Varrika's mace crashes against the stone floor of the abyss, sending shockwaves through the ground. The air is thick with the scent of decay and something else... something ancient and malevolent. The scuttling sound grows louder, more frantic, as Varrika's eyes lock onto the darkness below. The ancient Prison Guardian's gaze fixes on her, its malevolent intent palpable. As the echoes of Varrika's mace strike the stone floor of the abyss, it seems to amplify the sound of scuttling beneath them.
"Varrika! Merrin!" I cry out, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "Can you hear me? Are you alright?" My heart hammers against my ribs as I strain to listen over the scuttling and rumbling below.
The ground shifts under my feet and I stumble, catching myself on the edge of the abyss. Fear coils in my gut as I peer into the darkness, but I force myself to look away. "We need to get down there," I say, turning to Halie and Jeane. "But we can't just jump in blindly."
I take a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic pounding of my heart. "Halie, can you sense any life below? Any magic or energy that might help us find them?" My eyes search her face, looking for some sign of hope amidst the terror.
Jeane stands at the edge of the abyss, her crimson eyes scanning the darkness below with an appalled expression. This is exactly what I meant by 'careful.' She mutters to herself, frustration evident in her voice as she watches Varrika disappear into the unknown depths. Halie's reckless curiosity has put us all at risk. The scuttling sound echoes up from within the abyss, growing louder with each passing second. Jeane's wings unfurl instinctively, a gesture of readiness mixed with unease. That sound... it's not natural. Whatever is down there, Merrin and Varrika are in no position to handle it alone. She turns her attention back to Halie, noting the cleric's panic-stricken face. Calm yourself, girl. Panic will only make things worse. Jeane's voice is sharp but not unkind. We need to think this through logically. If we rush in blindly, we'll all fall prey to whatever waits below. Jeane's gaze shifts back to the darkness swallowing Varrika and Merrin. Her fingers trace the intricate patterns on her staff, drawing on its arcane power for comfort. First things first—we need to know what we're dealing with. Halie, can you sense any life force signatures down there? Any magical energies that might give us a clue? She pauses, listening intently to whatever response Halie might have. If not, then we need to find another way to gather information. Jeane's eyes narrow thoughtfully as she considers their options. Perhaps a scouting spell could reveal what lies below without putting us all in immediate danger. The ground rumbles again, more violently this time. Jeane steadies herself against the tremor, her expression growing more serious. Whatever ancient magic is at work here, it's awakening faster than I anticipated. We don't have much time to deliberate. She takes a step back from the abyss's edge, her wings folding back against her body as she thinks. My priority is maintaining overwatch. If something goes wrong down there—and given Halie and Varrika's track record, something inevitably will—someone needs to remain above ground to coordinate rescue or provide backup. Jeane's hand tightens around her staff as another scuttling sound echoes up from the depths. But make no mistake—I won't abandon them. If a clear path forward presents itself, I'll be down there faster than you can blink. For now, though... She casts one last appalled glance at where Merrin and Varrika vanished, ...we wait for more information. The scuttling sound grows louder, more frantic. Whatever is down there, it knows we're here now. The question is whether it's waiting for us to come to it... or if it's preparing to emerge.
I stand frozen at the edge of the abyss, my heart hammering against my ribs as I listen to the frantic scuttling below. The air grows thick with an ancient, malevolent energy that makes the very hairs on my arms stand on end. Varrika's scream echoes in my mind, a chilling reminder of the danger we now face. "We have to get down there," I say, my voice tight with urgency, turning to Halie and Jeane.
My eyes dart between them, searching for some sign of hope amidst the terror that threatens to overwhelm us all. The ground trembles again, a deep, ominous rumble that seems to travel up through the soles of my feet and into my bones. I take a step back from the edge, fear coiling in my gut as the sound of scuttling grows louder still.
Halie's face is pale, her eyes wide with shock. She clutches at the hem of her tunic, her knuckles bone-white. "I... I can't sense anything specific," she stammers, her voice shaking. "Just an overwhelming presence of dark magic." She shudders, wrapping her arms around herself as if to ward off a physical blow.
Jeane is already moving, her crimson wings unfurling with a soft rustle. She paces the edge of the abyss, her expression one of grim determination mixed with obvious concern for Merrin and Varrika. "We need more information," she says, her voice sharp and focused. "If we rush in blindly, we'll all fall prey to whatever waits below." She stops, turning to face us fully. Her eyes lock onto mine, intense and demanding. "Seraphine, you're our best hope for understanding this magic. What do you feel?"
