Phase: converging

The air crackles with tension, the sudden silence heavy and thick. The forest holds its breath around them, ancient trees seeming to lean in closer to witness the unfolding drama.
Varrika's hand tightens on her mace, every muscle tensed and ready. "Something's coming. Something big." Her scarred face is set in a grim mask of concentration, eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.
Jeane's wings half-spread, a defensive posture that puts her in a position to take flight or cast at a moment's notice. "I don't sense anything magical yet. No arcane signatures, no wards—just... old stone and older earth." Her crimson eyes narrow as she extends her senses, trying to pierce the veil of darkness beyond their circle of torchlight.
Seraphine crouches lower, sharp gaze darting between potential threats. "If it's not magical, then what? Animal? Bandit? Or something worse?" Her fingers caress the hilt of her dagger, ready to draw but cautious—she knows her skills are better suited to arcane combat than close quarters against a physical foe.
The wind drops completely, leaving an unnatural stillness that presses in around them. The sound of heavy movement echoes through the trees—something massive shifting weight in the darkness just beyond their vision.
Varrika hisses under her breath. "Whatever it is, it's big. And getting closer." She shifts her stance, mace held at shoulder height for a sweeping strike. "Stay behind me. If teeth or claws come our way, I'll give you an opening to cast."
Jeane nods, already beginning a complex incantation under her breath. "Understood. But remember—if it's some kind of undead horror, my magic will be more effective than your mace." Her staff begins to glow softly, arcane energy gathering around its tip.
The sound grows louder, closer—a heavy thudding that shakes the ground with each step. The trees seem to shudder in anticipation, ancient wood creaking in sympathy.
Seraphine's sharp eyes widen as a massive shape begins to emerge from the shadows—something that shouldn't exist in this world. "By the ancestors... what IS that?" She stumbles back a step despite her best efforts to remain calm, the sight before them defying all rational explanation.
A monstrous form looms into view—a twisted mass of shadow and malice given physical form. Eyes like embers fixed on them with ancient hunger. The air around it pulses with malevolent intent, the very stones seeming to recoil from its presence.
Varrika snarls in defiance, stepping forward to meet the entity head-on. "Fuck this noise. Something ancient and evil is trying to make a meal of us, and I'm not having it." Her mace swings in a devastating arc, aimed at the creature's shadowy form—
But instead of passing through, the mace stops dead as if striking solid stone. Varrika staggers from the impact, muscles straining against an invisible barrier.
Jeane completes her spell, a burst of purifying arcane energy erupting from her staff and washing over the entity. "Banish this ancient evil! Return it to the void from whence it came!"
The magical energy crashes into the shadowy figure, but instead of dissipating it as Jeane had hoped, it seems to... absorb the power somehow. The entity screams—a sound of pure, ancient rage—and its form begins to solidify further, tendrils of darkness lashing out in all directions.
Varrika is caught off guard by her mace's unexpected stoppage and stumbles back, narrowly avoiding a tendril that would have wrapped around her midsection. "What the hell is THIS thing made of?!" She readjusts her grip on her mace, muscles burning with exertion from the aborted strike.
Jeane's expression is grim as she lowers her staff, the evaporated arcane energy dissipating around her. "It's not just a spirit or ghost—it's something older and more... fundamental. My banishment spell isn't working because it's not just possessing Merrin—it's partially integrated with the nexus itself."
Varrika wipes sweat from his forehead, eyes never leaving the entity. "Great. So physical attacks work better than magic? Because that mace feels a lot heavier than usual right now." He starts moving towards the wall, mace raised high.
The entity laughs again, the sound echoing unnaturally in the confined space. "Futile... your weapons... cannot harm me... truly. Only... disruption of the nexus itself... can banish me..." More tendrils begin to form around it, writhing in anticipation.
Jeane's mind races as she tries to think of a solution—*
Varrika doesn't hesitate—she charges towards the crystal, mace raised high. "Hold onto something, Jeane! This might get messy!"
Jeane casts her protective spell just as Varrika's mace connects with the crystal—
The sound like a mountain cracking in half echoes through the chamber—*
Varrika is thrown back by the force of the explosion, sliding across the icy floor to crash against the far wall. "GAAH!" She hits hard, the wind knocked out of her for a moment before she struggles to her feet, dizzy and bruised but alive.
The crystal shatters into a thousand pieces, releasing a blast of raw arcane energy that washes over everyone present—*
Merrin's eyes slowly focus and return to normal. "Jeane? What... where..." Her voice is weak but recognizably hers.
The evaporated entity's presence leaves behind only a lingering chill and the shattered remains of the crystal focus—
Varrika
Jeane
Seraphine
