As Merrin steps forward into the darkness, the ground beneath her feet trembles violently, and a section of the wall behind her bursts open, revealing a dark, gaping maw that seems to stretch down into the depths of the earth. The Scuttling Sounds grow louder, and a wave of heat washes over the party as the air around them thickens with ancient power. Elric's eyes flash with urgency as he speaks, "The Prison Guardian is bound to the Tower's core, where the ancient magic is most potent. If you can reach the core, you may be able to bypass the Guardian and claim the Time-Splitting Sword." The Ward Spirit of the Deep speaks up, her voice like a gentle breeze in the darkness, "Beware, mortals, for the Prison Guardian is not the only danger lurking within the Tower's depths."

As Merrin begins to lead the party into the darkness, the air around them thickens further, making it difficult to breathe. The ground beneath their feet starts to slope downward, leading them deeper into the earth. Suddenly, a faint glow emanates from the walls, illuminating ancient carvings that depict a great battle between powerful beings. The symbols seem to pulse with a malevolent energy, warning of the horrors that lie within the Tower's depths.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane feels a surge of cold dread wash over her as the wall behind Merrin bursts open. She's already moving before she fully processes what's happening—her ethereal body darting between her companions, positioning herself to shield them from whatever might emerge from that dark maw.

The air around them crackles with ancient power, and Jeane can feel it like a physical force pressing against her skin—a cold, malevolent energy that makes even her own considerable magical abilities feel insignificant in comparison. This isn't just some dungeon monster or angry spirit. This is something old. Something wrong on a fundamental level.

Her crimson eyes narrow as she takes in the scene: Merrin issuing orders with that cold precision of hers; Varrika already in a fighting stance, her mace at the ready like she's itching for a fight no one can win; Halie demanding answers from Elric with her usual naive optimism. And Seraphine—clutching her tome like it might offer some kind of protection against this ancient horror.

Jeane opens her mouth to speak—to offer some advice, maybe, or to point out the obvious flaw in Merrin's plan—but the sound of scuttling echoes up from below cuts her off. Something is coming. Something big, and fast, and likely very hostile.

For a moment, just one brief instant, Jeane considers calling for a strategic retreat. They could regroup outside the forest, reassess their approach to this cursed Tower, come back with better preparation and more information. But no—she can't afford to look weak in front of her companions. And besides, she's come too far to turn back now.

Jeane takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what's to come. "Wait," she says, her voice cutting through the rumble of the earth and the crackle of ancient magic. Her spectral form flickers as she gathers power, drawing on the dark energies that fuel her own sorcery but careful not to draw too much attention from whatever lurks below.

She fixes Merrin with a stern look, her crimson eyes glinting in the dim light. "Your plan is reckless and likely suicidal. We don't know what we're facing here—this isn't like anything we've encountered before." Her gaze shifts to Seraphine, then Varrika. "If we rush in blindly, we'll be picked off one by one."

Jeane turns her attention back to Merrin, her expression unyielding. "We need a better plan. Something that actually gives us a chance of survival." She gestures towards the dark maw with a graceful sweep of her arm. "That thing down there—whatever it is—it's ancient and powerful beyond measure. We can't just sneak past it or fight our way through."

Her voice takes on a calculated tone, her mind already racing through possibilities. "We need to understand what we're dealing with first. Find out its weaknesses, its boundaries." She taps the air thoughtfully with one finger, her spectral form leaving brief trails of dark energy. "Maybe there's some kind of ritual we can perform, or a specific sequence of actions that'll allow us to bypass it."

Jeane steps closer to Merrin, her wings unfurling slightly in an intimidating display. "Or—and hear me out—maybe we don't have to face it at all. If the core is what binds it here, perhaps there's a way to sever that connection from afar." She raises an eyebrow, knowing she's pushing against Merrin's natural inclinations but unwilling to let her charge headlong into certain doom.

"This isn't just about getting the sword anymore," Jeane continues, her voice taking on a darker edge. "This is about survival. And if we don't think this through carefully, we won't survive long enough to even try."

She meets Merrin's eyes steadily, challenging and imploring all at once. "So let's pause. Let's assess the situation properly." Her gaze flicks briefly to Halie and Elric, suspicion evident in her expression. "And while we're at it, maybe we should consider whether our 'esteemed guide' here has been entirely honest with us about what awaits within these walls."

Jeane folds her arms across her chest, her spectral form shimmering with barely contained power. "What do you say? Shall we take a moment to outthink this ancient horror instead of just charging in like fools?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel a chill run down my spine as the air crackles with ancient power, and the ground beneath our feet begins to tremble. The wall behind Merrin bursts open, revealing a dark, gaping maw that seems to stretch down into the depths of the earth—a clear invitation for whatever lurks below to emerge and devour us.
My heart pounds in my chest as the sound of scuttling echoes up from the darkness, growing louder with each passing second. This isn't just some monster or skeleton—this is something far worse. An ancient being, bound to the very heart of this accursed tower, and it's waking up.
The magic in the air presses against my skin like a physical weight, making my own spells feel childish and ineffectual. I clutch my tome tighter, more out of instinct than any real hope it will protect me.
I watch as Merrin steps forward into the darkness, her voice cutting through the rumble of the earth to issue orders to Varrika and Halie. She’s so confident, so sure of herself—but can she really be this reckless? We have no idea what we’re facing here.
Jeane's spectral form flickers in the magical storm, her crimson eyes narrowing as she tries to reason with Merrin. "Your plan is reckless and likely suicidal," she says, her voice laced with concern. For once, I find myself agreeing with her completely.
My gaze drifts to Elric, who seems to be the only one who knows anything about this Prison Guardian. He's standing there, his expression unreadable, watching us with those strange, glowing eyes. What is he thinking? Does he truly know what we're up against? Or is he simply leading us into a trap for his own purposes?
The air thickens further, making it difficult to breathe. A faint glow emanates from the walls, illuminating ancient carvings that depict a great battle between powerful beings. The symbols seem to pulse with a malevolent energy, warning of the horrors that lie within the Tower's depths.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. "Jeane is right," I say, my voice trembling slightly but firm. "We can't just rush in there blindly. We need more information."
I look at Elric again, my eyes locking onto his with an intensity that surprises even me. "You said the Prison Guardian was bound to the Tower's core. That's where the ancient magic is most potent." I take a step closer to him, my voice dropping to a low, threatening tone. "So tell us, old man. How do we get to the core without triggering this... thing? And more importantly, once there—how do we bypass it?"
The scuttling sound grows louder still, and a deep, guttural roar echoes from below. It sounds like the world itself is about to tear open and swallow us whole.
I feel a surge of cold dread wash over me, but beneath it, a flicker of determination. We came here for the Time-Splitting Sword, and we won't leave empty-handed—not if I have anything to say about it.
My eyes dart around the group—Merrin, Varrika, Halie, Jeane. They're my companions, my friends, my allies in this insane quest. And right now, they need me to be the voice of reason.
I turn back to Elric, my expression hardening. "Start talking," I demand, my voice leaving no room for argument. "Tell us everything you know about this Guardian and how to get past it. Now."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's heart hammers in her chest as she stares into the dark maw, her mind racing with possibilities. "Damn it all," she mutters under her breath. Jeane's right—charging in blind like this is suicide, but what choice do they have? They came here for that sword, and they're not leaving without it.

She turns to face the group, her expression serious. "Listen up," she says, her voice cutting through the rumble of the earth. "Jeane's got a point. We can't just rush in there like idiots." She nods at Seraphine. "And you're right too, wizard. We need to know what we're dealing with before we make our move."

Merrin's gaze locks onto Elric, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "Which means you," she says, pointing a finger at the old man. "You've been holding out on us, haven't you? You knew there was something like this down here, and you didn't warn us."

She steps forward, closing the distance between them in two quick strides. "So start talking," Merrin demands, her voice a low growl. "Tell us everything you know about this Guardian and how to get past it. And don't leave anything out, or I swear to every god in existence, I will toss you into that hole myself."

As the scuttling sound grows louder still, Merrin feels a surge of cold dread wash over her. She's never been one to back down from a fight, but this... this is different. This is ancient and powerful and likely far beyond anything they've faced before.

But what choice do they have? They can't turn back now. Not with the Time-Splitting Sword so close at hand. "Alright," she says, turning to face the dark maw once more. "We'll do this smart. Varrika, Halie—you're with me. We'll try to sneak past whatever comes out of that hole."

She glances at Jeane and Seraphine. "Jeane, Seraphine—if anything happens to us, if we get separated, you two find a way to slow it down or distract it. Use whatever magic you've got, but be ready to run if things go south." Her eyes meet Elric's again, her expression hardening. "And you—if you want our help with this Ward Spirit, you're going to tell us everything you know about the Tower and what we're up against. Right now."

Merrin takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever comes next. "Let's do this," she mutters under her breath, and with that, she steps forward into the darkness, ready to face whatever lurks in the depths of the accursed tower.

She feels a hand on her arm as Varrika moves up beside her. "Stay sharp, little one," the warrior woman says, her voice gruff but kind. "And don't you dare try to be a hero."

Merrin flashes a quick grin, even as her heart pounds in her chest. "No promises," she says, and with that, she leads the way into the darkness, her mind already racing ahead to whatever challenges and horrors await them in the depths of the Tower.

As they move forward, the ground beneath their feet starts to slope downward, leading them deeper into the earth. The air around them thickens further, making it difficult to breathe.
Suddenly, a faint glow emanates from the walls, illuminating ancient carvings that depict a great battle between powerful beings. The symbols seem to pulse with a malevolent energy, warning of the horrors that lie within the Tower's depths.

Merrin feels a chill run down her spine as she looks at the carvings, but she doesn't slow her pace. They have to keep moving forward if they want to survive this.
